Many xvid's are compressed too much and look, quite frankly, terrible (blocky, bad blacks/greys, blurry, banding, etc). Done properly xvids can come pretty close to dvd quality. It depends on a number of factors (source, program used for ripping, no of passes, etc) but one of the main problems is people trying to compress the data too much. As a general rule of the thumb aim for : TV programs (30 minutes -> 1h) usually 350mb. Movies <1h 30 should be around 700mb and movies >1h 30 should be 1.4gb (2 x 700mb files) sometimes even 2.1gb (3 x 700mb). Problems start to occur when people try and encode 3 hour movies into a single 700mb file. Still, if it looks fine playing on your laptop then it should look fine playing on your TV (unless you've got a huge HDTV - in which case you should be looking at acquiring x264 HD videos instead of plain xvids). |
