View Full Version : What's the oldest dated food anyone's had?
UnkleBob 05-03-2005, 18:32 Hello, last week i found some soup in the larder, dated best before june 2000. it seemed a waste when people are starving so i had it for lunch/dinner. I'm still here and it was delish!
That got me thinking, what's the oldest dated food anyone's had?
x_LoUiSe_x 05-03-2005, 18:34 not food, but i dod fond a tub of sudo crem dated 1987 in my mums bathroom cupboard!
UnkleBob 05-03-2005, 18:38 uurgh! not even i would eat that!
x_LoUiSe_x 05-03-2005, 18:46 uuurgggggh even the "indate" sudo crem tastes minging as my 18 month old daughter found out when she got hold of it n started eating it! lol the look on her face was quite funny though :hihi:
why doesn't wine have a best before/sell by date on it?
x_LoUiSe_x 05-03-2005, 18:57 because it gets better with age, like whiskey n stuff, the older the better
Used to work in a supermarket and still remember the story of the frozen Turkey that was discovered in a small rural Co-op.
They had kept chucking all the new stock on top of the old stuff. One year at xmas they had a shortage of Turkeys and the old stock saw the light of day.
It was at least ten years out of date :gag:

It would be pointless in our house.
I remember buying a bottle of sherry which stated 'Best drunk within 48 hours of opening' so I was.

hmm, sounds like an urban myth this does! I once saw Ray mears, the survival expert on tv in a hunting lodge in Alaska or somewhere and they were eating corned beef out of tins that were from the 1950's!
Kristian 05-03-2005, 19:34 I'v been fed a veggie burger from the freezer that was over two years out of date. It didn't taste any different, but my Mom was frightened to death, 'cos she realsed after I'd eaten it.
That was her story anyway... :hihi:

They do reckon tinned food can last for years, think i read somewhere some fifty year old spam or something was opened and found to be perfectly edible.
By the way, shouldn't this thread be in general chit chat?
cgksheff 05-03-2005, 20:09 There is a big difference in the cans of old and the cans of today.
A good old can would last 10 years and then some.
Some of today's rubbish can start to blow after 18 months!
In the old days threads would last at least a day or so!!!
UnkleBob 05-03-2005, 22:04 Do you remember a show called Northern Exposure? in one episode a villager found a mammoth in the ice and the locals (American Indians) considered it a delicacy so they thawed it out and ate that...OK it's fiction but that would win the prize!
