View Full Version : [SOLD] Places to go for alternative people...
Mr. Teatime 21-09-2003, 20:44 Hi,
I'm a 21 yr old student in Sheffield, I live in Walkley, basically I'm looking for a place to socialise. I don't like traditional clubs and pubs (in the sense that they play crap music and everyoine's there to pull someone), nor do I like going out to smoke or get drunk (since I don't smoke or drink!). I'd just like to go out to somewhere where it's a friendly atmosphere, nice people. I think you could call my tastes 'alternative'. I occasionally went to the fuzzclub at Sheffield Union but it got a bit boring - my music tastes are very varied (favourite band are Queen, but I'll listen to anything that's good, I'm not one of those students who lives for the 1970s).
So any recommendations....?
Thanks,
Jon
Nope... it appears nobody knows anywhere to go that doesn't require drinking, smoking or listening to crap music!
I suggest you take up drinking. Start by rubbing lager into your clothes to get used to the smell. Then try rubbing it on your gums to familiarise yourself with the taste. Once comfortable with that, then you are ready to progress to the swallowing stage. Just a little to start with, but before you know it you'll be swigging 10 pints of Stella's a night down the boozer listening to any old crap on the juke box and your social life with have improved tenfold.
Good luck.
*Twinkle* 24-09-2003, 15:37 Errrmmm well I guess a good place to meet people who are nice and friendly would be at the Classic Rock bar on the 2nd of October.... ~ Forum meet up :D
Now if I was going I'd offer to sit with you and down some orange juices, but I'm not...so erm... well I hope that helps anyways! :D
Mr. Teatime 24-09-2003, 21:40 Well I used to drink, when I first started university I used to do the whole 'social' thing, but I don't think I can ever say I really enjoyed drinking. Only reason for ever doing it was peer pressure. I just got fed up with it. It costs money, I felt terrible in the morning, whilst drinking I never really enjoyed it anyway, and it never really got me anywhere socially anyway. Whilst the media loves to portray students as heavy drinkers, who whilst not drinking are smoking cannabis all the time or doing a load of other drugs, not all of us (well, there's me...) are like that. It all seems a bit pointless to me, also I don't see why I should 'have' to do these things to be a likeable person. Note - I don't have problems with what other people do, the only thing I don't like really is sitting right next to someone who is smoking as it makes my clothes stink and I have to have a shower when I get home to get rid of the smell. I am more confident in talking about this stuff since I found out that there are a few other students who are like this, who just don't need to drink, smoke, and so on, to enjoy themselves. This is a bit of a rant but it really annoys me the way we're expected to be and act, and if not we're attacked individually by other people, it's as a whole by the society (largely the media) we live in. Don't drink? You're a loser! Don't want to take (illegal) drugs? You haven't lived, commit suicide! Anyway I feel I've gone on too long for what should have been a short reply! This is a nice forum btw, got some useful information and views so far...
Classic Rock 25-09-2003, 09:37 The Classic Rock bar plays Queen. We don't have 'crap' music on our music system. 8)
Moon Maiden 25-09-2003, 09:52 Have you found your pub yet Classic?? Or has the old bint been sorted??

Totally agree with you Mr Teatime.
I was t-total for 8 years and have only just started having a drink again now. I only have one or two beers if i go out and maybe one on sundays.
Ignore peer group pressure I say. Do what you want and what you feel is right for you.
I really don't like that smokey clothes thing too...
Mr Teatime, I am sorry if I have caused offence!
Iwas not actually taking the p*ss out of you for not being a drinker (well perhaps just a little bit;) :)). I was really taking the p*ss out of the rest of us who failed miserably to think of anything to do that doesn't involve drinking!!

Places to go for alternative people...
Mars?
Somewhere out in space anyway, had you decided what features you were looking for? green? small? or maybe a bit like ET?
Anatouskia 25-09-2003, 18:38 Firstly. hello all, I'm new :D
Erm, I've graduated and decided to stay in Sheffield as I like it here. So I've got a house sorted and am looking for jobs, but the real problem is the slight lack of a social life. I'd like somewhere 'alternative' (laid back, no pressure to get wasted etc.) to go, but also some folk to go with. Am finding it hard to meet new people, especially female friends.
So, did you establish good places to go? Beyond bars, are there clubs (the social not the musical kind) or other things to do that might brighten my day after temping on the world's busiest switchboard??

Yeah but she needs to find someone in one of these places first before she can!
I don't think she's alone though in wanting such a venue.
tinajones 25-09-2003, 19:52 i was thinking about going dahn tahn for a boogie tonight but its reight cold and it'll be FULL of freshers - thou i could try and corrupt a few of them, ha ha! besides the forum is what the others on this thread have described... what else do you need when you are online with a glass of wine - its like being in the pub but not stinking of smoke when you wake up!

Surely there must be a rock or alternative rock club in sheffield though? I mean I know Sheff uni runs the Fuzz Club but that wasn't that great when I used to go.... also where is the Classic Rock bar? tia
Revelation 26-09-2003, 20:22 I'm 21, a student and don't drink or smoke either. I also would like to know where to go.

Round to Tinajones's if she's got some plonk on the go!
hiyabeing 26-09-2003, 20:50 I suppose if you want non-alcohol based activities, you need to choose an activity! Not a lot of non-drinkers congregate in pubs and clubs, especially if they don't like smoke and drunk people.
However, even those of us who like a few jars, like to do other things too. A lot of people won't just go hang out somewhere to meet people unless they're doing something else, or drinking.
There's loads of links on the forum (here) for other things to do... ie. Museums, galleries, parks, walks (even the General Cemetery has one.. which I've yet to get to.. but I'm gonna go!) even a walking club I saw the other day, that sounds ok.
This is the city and you should be able to find most things you can think of being available (somewhere).. the hardest part is deciding what you actually wanna do.
And if you just wanna go listen to music in a bar with people who don't want to get drunk - start your own club, gather people off the internet and do whatever you wanna do. Some bloke on Richard & Judy the other day (ish) had started his own cult, and thousands (maybe more) have 'joined him'. Anyone know a link for this?? I may go and search... may be quite interesting!!!!!
Anyway - check the other threads on forum for things to do. OR give us a clue as to what you enjoy doing and the ideas will probably come flooding in.
Cheers:P
alchresearch 26-09-2003, 20:59 I can highly suggest tree climbing and paddling about in Treeton Dyke on Saturday afternoons - it's where you always find me!
(I do take my little brothers along too - it's not 'done' to be seen climbing trees alone at 30 years old!)

I'm 21, a student and don't drink or smoke either. I also would like to know where to go. i always thought that sheffield could do with some proper late night cafes... it's certainly big enough. i've got a few friends in cambridge and whenever we go out we nearly always end up at one. one's open till 2, the other all night, no alcohol, comfy sofas, fantastic hot chocolate, food and nice music.
there's the interval on friday/saturday, but it's a bit ****... dead quiet and it's not really conducive to relaxing if you've been out.
what do people reckon?
Agent Dan 01-10-2003, 12:02 FOB bar near the cathedral has gone late - only til 8pm at the moment but they're looking to make it later... They'll only do it, of course, if there's a demand - so get in there!!!

Ravenger 05-10-2003, 18:55 I'm not a student, but I don't drink or smoke either, and don't particually like pubs and clubs because of this.
Generally the only place I go to regularly is the Cinema, but my wife doesn't like the sorts of films I'm into. (She hates anything violent or scary), so I often go on my own.
Maybe we could sort out a group of us to see a movie over at Valley Centertainment - or there's bowling, which I'm not very good at, but it's a good laugh.
I live in Walkley too, BTW.
hopeless_BS 06-10-2003, 16:59 I dont drink smoke or get stoned. I've been to corporation a few times which used to be ok for 'alternative' people but is now just over run by completely wasted school kids. Most of my friends have left for uni while I opted for a full time job and find myself without places to go out anymore because there doesnt seem to be many people left like myself... I'm not hypocritical enough to say that I'm Straight Edge but I'd much rather be toxic free and have fun without relying on other substances just to have a good time. I dont really object to people who want to live their lives smoking out all day and drinking, I just feel sorry for them I suppose. I'm glad there's people out here in sheffield that do feel the same but I just havent been lucky enough to meet any of you yet.
Lol I should have read the original post properly.
Just wasted 20 minutes posting a load of links to alternative pubs and clubs bah :)
