The_DADDY 28-02-2008, 11:02 I dont think the tip will take them.
Have you rang the council?
They will be able to tell you where you need to take it or if the tip actualy does take them.
just take it to the tip no probs mate seen loads there
cuddlycats 28-02-2008, 11:03 Thanks-ill try ringing them.
puddinburner 28-02-2008, 11:04 If you ring Street Force...ONYX they will arrange to take your fridge away, you just leave it on drive with doors secured. Saves the hasstle of taking to tip yourself.
Also NOMAD may be interested as a charity for homeless folk.
cuddlycats 28-02-2008, 11:08 Thanks guys-just found this http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/environment/waste-and-pollution/waste/householdwastefaqs
I should have checked there first!
Dizzyblonde 28-02-2008, 11:15 I've seen fridges at the blackstock road tip. You can not throw a fridge into a general rubbish skip, it has to be treated differently but they do that for you. Not everybody can lift a fridge to get it there, so if you can't then you have to pay for a special collection from your house.

I think if you notify the council and then leave it outside your house they will pick it up for free.
Im not sure though, maybe one of those urban myths but it may be worth asking.
cgksheff 28-02-2008, 12:07 Q. How do I dispose of my fridge/freezer?
A. Fridges and freezers have to be treated in accordance with European Directives to remove the CfCs contained within both the coolant and the foam insulation. You can have your fridge/freezer collected and disposed of free of charge by ringing the Sheffield Council call-centre on 273 4567 and then pressing 1 to get through to the Veolia call-centre. Veolia will then arrange with you when the unit can be collected and they will ensure that it is disposed of correctly. Alternatively you can take them to one of the Household Waste Recycling Centres.
.. as linked to by cuddlycats above.
Yep I took one to the tip. No probs. Obviously it doesn't go in the big general waste bin, they have a section for them.

Provided they can get up your street. My neighbour paid the council to have some items of rubbish removed and eventually had to get her money back. WHy? because they claimed the street was always chocka with parked cars when they tried to collect.
Other thing is, if you take a large item in a van or other large vehicle over 5'10" (I think) in height, to Blackstock Road you must ring the tip in advance to book your vehicle in.
OK, they usually will let you in if you genuinely didn't know (as I didn't last week) - since how is one supposed to just "know" such things? But now you do know, better to be safe and ring up first to save being turned away
Updated link (http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/environment/waste/householdwastefaqs#fridges) to council website page with information about disposal of fridge/freezers (and other non-general waste).
