Lostrider 04-03-2005, 15:45 Just scanned a negative of Pond street, I photographed this on my dad's old Agifold 120 camera back in ???
Any ideas when, must be 70's
What do you think?

This link will take you to a higher resolution photo (380k) than was here originally. You can now download the image and blow it up to get into the detail if you want too.
Can't see the swimming pool or the Poly library on there yet. Can you see the car registrations on your copy?
Tazz070299 05-03-2005, 01:06 The swimming pool would have been off the photo to the left, as it ran down the side of Harmer Lane.
Looking at the cars and buses, I 'd guess at late '60's or early '70's.

Ousetunes 05-03-2005, 09:07 I'd go for early 70s, the buses in Sheffield Transport livery and the cars, or lack of them.
Also, if you look at the block of flats, on the seventh floor of the block to the right, there's a young lad bopping away with platform shoes and kipper tie on.
Infact, if you can listen carefully, you'll see that he's bopping to the Rubettes' Sugar Baby Love, a number one hit in May 1974.
So there.

If that is you dancing in the window it can't be "sugar baby love" as you would have been able to see the polytechnic Library being built on the Car Park. It was started in 1973.
Plain Talker 05-03-2005, 12:22 Thanks for sharing this brilliant photo with us, lostrider.
Can you remember where the pic was taken from? Was it the staircase beside the garage on Pond/Flat street, which ran up to Arundel Gate via the Fiesta and Steelys? (it's either there, or from the polytechnic building... it is not as far over as the bridge which lef to the escalators, i am sure)
I would put the date at sometime in the mid to late sixties, personally.
I think that, because the trees that now adorn the hillside up towards the Park Hill and Claywood Flats are not really in evidence. My granny lived on PHF from 1966 to 77, and I remember playing on the grassed area, on the hillside, and I remember the trees being there, when i was a child. The hillside looks completely free of trees.
it's definitely pre 1970-ish, as someone else has pointed out.. there's no Sheaf Valley Baths (sighs wistfullly) nor the polytechnic library, which are pretty much where the carpark is, on the photo.
As an aside, I can see an old Thames van/ minibus parked on harmer lane, at the end of the bus shelter building. (there's a chap, crossing the road in front of it) My late uncle had one of those, that he and my father converted into a "caravanette" in the early 70's.
I can also make out a couple of VW Kamper caravettes parked over near the gate of the railway station.
PT
If you look at the registration on the bus: SWE 568 J.
This was i believe 1972
little malc 05-03-2005, 13:08 This brings back happy memories, the year will be about 1973, I was driving these buses then, the one on the foreground to the right is a Daimler Fleetline, the one behind it an A E C backloader, so called because like the old London buses, the entrance is at the back, and open.
Non of these buses had power steering, when you had a full load of passengers, tight corners produced plenty sweat! this was the time when you could travel from any of the suburbs into town for 10p, thus, the buses were well used and full.
This was also the time when "Pond st Norah" was on the go, many threads have been written about her, and the hot chestnut man at the bottom of the steps into the bus station.
It is such a good photo I am sure the bus museum at Tinsley would be interested in seeing it if you get the chance to contact them.

superb photo, hard to Imagine that it was took on an old camera they dont make camera's like that nowadays.Looking at that photo brings back some memories how it as changed down in pond street can anybody remember that street finder the one where you pushed a button and the small light bulb lit up to show you the street you was looking for. If my memory serves me correctly didnt there use to be about 2 or 3 cafes in pond street bus station I can remember that you had to go down to the toilets in the bus station I can also remember the old newspaper shop that stood just outside the bus station the one with the oddly shaped roof, also looking at the photo I would think that Sheffield united tours booking office would have been there and the old Y.E.B. offices where you paid your electric bill I might be wrong but I can remember it being there.I wish I had been into photography then I would have got some good shots of old sheffield all I was bothered about then was the railways and forty years down the line I am still into the railways mind you I am now into buses as well I wonder if I will be in another forty years time I never thought I would be into the railways all this time.

No, the S.U.T office, like the Sheaf Baths, are too far to the left of this image to be incuded.

little malc 07-03-2005, 14:20 The cafe on "C" platform was called The Four Seasons, very popular with all us bus drivers, the one on "A" platform was a small stand-up cafe for tea and toast etc, yes, the toilets were down a flight of steps on "C" platform next to the inspectors office. Also, in the late 60s and early 70s, a converted single deck bus, the "tea wagon" had a set route each day, stopping at Fitzallan Square and some of the outer terminus points, so that drivers and conductors could get a cuppa, and a dripping cake, yummy!!

glenbern 09-03-2005, 03:50 We believe this to be closer to 1960 - 1962. The mini was introduced in 1960 and there seems to be only one in the whole picture!

The Mini was actually introduced in 1959. After a quick search I spotted no less than 5 examples in the photo.
I'd say the picture must be later than mid-sixties because there's a Mark IV Ford Zodiac visible right in the centre of the car park and that model was first made in in 1966.
Other clues:
If that's a Daimler Fleetline bus in the centre of the photo, they were introduced in 1962
However, the bus could be the very similar Leyland Atlantean and they were first made in 1958.
Beyond doubt however are the several Vauxhall Vivas in the pic. They were first made in 1963.
I'll get me anorak :)
Lostrider 09-03-2005, 23:00 I have linked to a higher resolution photo now for those of you who want to download it and blow it up for more detail.

That's so much better.
I can see a Mk1 Ford Capri now. They were introduced in Jan 1969, so it's getting later all the time.
just an idea have you thought of going back to the places where the photos was taken and doing them now to see how much sheffield as changed you could have the then and now look. the one of the walkway up to victoria station as changed a hell of a lot as as the road way where the arches is. so as sheffield midland station I wonder what year that was when the photo was taken ?

Do you know, If I could prise myself away from this damn internet I could do a lot of things with my life instead of becoming the sad person I appear to be turning into.
At least when I was on pay as you go i set a time limit, since getting broadband i have no control anymore. :help: :help: :help:
But, you wait when the summer comes, I will be off doing all sorts of things. First sign of sun and warm breezes, I'll dig the motorbike out of the back of the garage (order skip first to empty contents of garage into) and go places. :hihi:
I have the same feeling I enjoyed it on pay as you go my set time was do so much then come off it now with broadband I am on the damm internet well in to the early hours of the morning,it cant be good for us do you know I spend that much time looking at my monitor that I dont watch tv now infact I dont do that much in the day because I am too knackered to do anything, and yes come the summer months when it turns warm I will be out with my camera I should be out all year round doing photos but too tired to do anything at the moment.

Do what ever makes you happy, that's what I say. I can't wait to get back to my normal work pattern, but that seems unlikely, at least until the end of the week. The internet keeps me sane at the moment!

Ousetunes 11-03-2005, 11:23 mojoworking - you beat me to it. The Ford Capri Mark 1 did indeed come out in 1969 and my family had one. Hey, that could be our car! (On closer inspection, I can see 2 such cars.)
Would another pointer be Granville College? Does anybody know when that opened?
I'm going for 1969, the very year I sprogged out.

Did I spot 2 Capris in there? That would date it 1969 or after. they were launched in Feb '69 http://www.fordcapri.co.uk/

I have a feeling that someone is going to produce a list of all the cars visible. :hihi:
No not me.
Its a bit like "I Spy", I spy somethimg beggining with "R"
Reliant Regal?
Is that a Triumph Herald Convertible? or maybe its a Vitesse. Six cylinder 2000cc, now that was a car.
Could be a TR6
Well what else would you use to date the pic? Isn't there a developer's date on the back of the paper copy
Plain Talker 11-03-2005, 18:31 hi lostrider, I coul;dn't see a reliant regal or a supervan, but the three wheeler in the middle of the car park is one of those fibre glass, pale blue "invalid chariots" that the ministry used to issue, before the motability scheme came into being.
also, seeing as the picture ahs been improved, with better resolution, has viking been able to confirm that car registration number he mentioned, earlier in this thread...? ;)

The picture is scanned directly from a negative so no clues there.
With the comments so far I would put it at 1970 to 1972. In 1969 my dad wouldnt have let me anywhere near his camera.
By the way I still have this camera, must be getting on for 65 years olds now.
Something I did notice on the picture itself is the British Rail sign on the LMS sation, when did they start using that livery with the cross line logo.
'65 onwards according to this (http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/gb_brail.html) which would be about Beeching's time, would it?

You mean the Invacar,
Invacar (http://www.virtualgaz.co.uk/invacarpage.htm)
I await others comments on this, looking at tha size of the Moggie thou behind it, it looks too big to me.
And didn't thay have a very large sticky out boot? But you might be right.
I dont think I have ever looked at a photo in such detail before, the more you look, the more you see!
my other half was a bus driver in the 60's out of herries road.

pitsmoorboy 21-03-2005, 14:39 Early 70's looking at the cars, The one on the extreme right is a Humber Sceptre almost out of shot, could have been me I used to have one about that time. most of the cars in the car park were made in the mid 60's and i am guessing they could be about Ten years old when the photo was took.
Great photo, it a pity you carnt see john Mc Kenzie's paper shop ( threepenny bit ) thats where i met my first wife & second & third &---- excuse me while i top myself

oooh i was launched in april 69, not far off :)
Having a quick llok its early 70's cant be after December 1976 as it contains rear entrance buses. The poly hasnt been build so it is earlier than that. Think it was taken off the stair case leading up to arundle gate , at one time this contained glass display casses for sheffield shops. some of the buses still have the grey rooms which were discontinued in the early 70's. the train in the station is still in BR green livery. What a pity oyou cant see the registration or fleet numbers there are two bus types which have examples in the Sheffield bus musuem at Tinsley. Must go and do some more research !!!
harwink2 22-02-2006, 08:05 Late sixties looking at the cars in the car park... you can see me on the top floor of the flats in the backgound.. look closer. I have the Afgan coat and tie dyed t shirt... no really I do!
I go for between 1968 - 1972, my late grandad was a bus driver so I have a good idea of the year/years
caramac55 22-02-2006, 19:04 Did I spot 2 Capris in there? That would date it 1969 or after. they were launched in Feb '69
spot on, The year has to be 69/70

Sorry, but the three wheeler in the middle of the pic is most definatly a reliant regal, ofton mistakingly called a robin (built later). I had several of these and spent many hours working on them. the invalid carriage you mention was a narrower Vehicle being only a one seater.
caramac55 22-02-2006, 19:14 Just as a foot note, there are 2 reliant regal supervans on the right of the pic. one partly obscured by the bus shelter and one partly obscured by the Ford Thames in the road.
by god thats a brilliant photo of the old bus station I can remember it well when it use to be like that, not like this pile of crap we have got now oh the joys of being a bus spotter in them days, I wonder where I can obtain a photo of the old sheffield bus station as I would like to take it with me when I move to bonnie scotland, this is one photo that would go over my fireplace along with all my trains and eddie stobbart lorries, and maybe a couple of my plane photos like the vulcan bomber and the lancaster bomber taken at finningley a few years ago. but the old bus stations and the buses what was in the time the photo was taken would take priority over any other photos.
The Hallam library was there in 1975. I'd deffo say mid- to late-60s or very early 70's (I was born in 72). When my dad gets his laptop online next week I'll get him to have a look cos he'd have been on the buses around that time and he learnt on an AEC.
