I don't know if one already exists on here (tried searching) but was wondering if other dog owners would like to arange a dog walk together. Maybe at rother valley or somewhere like that. My basett loves other dogs and is very friendly, but as none of my friends own dogs he's missing out on some kainine pals.

Strix organised a few once before and they were very popular!

I think it's a great idea if your dog is of the socialable kind!

:)

PS I give it 10 mins before you received a Sheffield Forum Bot Private Message taking your ''???'' in the title down to just '?'

:hihi:

I toyed with the idea before but didn't quite get it together, I'd love to socialise Maisey. I could do with a lift to Rothervalley (flutters eye lashes) but can do walks around Norfolk Park or Gleedless woods pretty easily.

P.s. I changed your title for you!

i'd appreciate it if you kept me informed.

I'd be interested - and Lisa, come April I will have my new big car with dog crates so you can come with us then! :D

I can't bring Eddy but I might give it a try with Takara as she's nervous of large dogs but much better in a pack where she feels more comfortable. I think she'd be better walking with a large group of dogs including large breeds than she is meeting large breeds while on a walk because she'd have chance to get used to them :D

Excellent! I look forward to it. I have just been looking a busses - I gather the 41 may go close to the back enterance so we may be able to join you sooner :-)

Maisey hates meeting dogs on the lead - espcially if they're loose - but she loves to run around with them.

Bless her! I need to walk with someone who understands that women sometimes get grumpy! Takara will sometimes raise a lip if a dog's getting a bit full on and people then drag their dogs away saying I have an aggressive dog

It's like 'hello? would you be happy if a stranger came up and snogged you?!'

I think socialising your dog is very important, if a dog 'raises a lip' at another dog it's simply saying hold on i don't like that.

my dog is very playful but soft as a brush.

They'll get on a treat (or at least give each other a good run around).

One of my pet hate is parents that come over to coo and then scuttle off when she barks or, worst still, jumps up and muddies their perfect unsoiled coats.

Exactly Natalie,

Takara was well socialised and despite a fear of large dogs, she's still very good. She does show dogs when she's had enough but it's all ritualised aggression - she doesn't fight, she just tells them to bog off and walks away!

If she's comfortable with a dog she loves to play and chase - if she's uncomfortable she tells them to back off and avoids them. Much rather have her that way than willing to go up to any dog and then have a go!

If something does get sorted for a 'Day out with the dogs' Could someone please let me know when and where, as my dogs are really playfull, and my 2yr old lab needs a bit more socializing (not that shes nasty, just that she gets scared) it would do her a word of good! Thank x

jumps up and muddies their perfect unsoiled coats.

Hehe - I have to ask them what they were thinking of walking through a park if they complain

T rarely jumps up but if you were that bothered about keeping clean, you wouldn't risk walking somewhere where there are likely to be dogs, would you?! Well I wouldn't!

People send their kids to say hi to the spotty dogs and then give me the rudest look ever when Takara barks!! It's like, because they were on a Disney film, they're not real dogs!

Or mud.... or dirty climbing frames...

Poor T, litters of 101 must be a pain!

I think some people forget that dogs understand each other, they know how far to go with each other. When would be a good time for people, I was thinking a Sunday around dinner time but if that's not good for people just say.

Weekends are best for me. So long as I know in advance, then I can usually work everything else I have to do around it! (Although these things are usually arranged when I can't make it at all!)

Put us down to join the mele, and we'll organise the next one - there are some good dog walking fields in this neck of the woods which are more accessible by public transport than Rothervalley is :)

Does rother valley still cost to park there? Or am I thinking of somewhere else?

It was too late. I decided that given I was editing the post twice - once by accident and once to rectify I'd better explain.

Mandie,

Its been about a year but I beleive the do charge.

I mentioned it a while ago but people thought it might be stressful on their dogs etc with some being off and some being on lead, i remember a few people who werent keen on the idea.......

Just thinking the same, I would love to come, but as I do not let my dog of her lead I would be very nervous and stressed if there were off leaders running around,. Not that she is vicious, in fact she is one of the most dog friendly Akitas we know, but she still is an Akita and if a. n. other dog did decide to have a 'go' , as part of the chracteristrics of her breed, she would not back down. Plus I signed a document when I rescued her which states that I will not let her off lead in a public place...

Maybe it would be a good idea for dogs to be kept on leads till they get to know each other, what do you think. I suggested Rother valley but I really don't mind where, any other suggestions?

I'd love to come but as I can't let my girl of at all... and if others are going too, I sadly won't be able too. It would just be too stressful.

I have been on walks with Akita groups, last one was Clumber park, and there can be quite a few of us walking our dogs together, all on leads with no problems and the dogs all seems to enjoy themselves.

I didn't know that, thank you! I'll have to get my husband to find the other entrances! Rother valley is right near us, but we never go because of the charge to park, as we'd rather spend the money on petrol to go to Graves Park and see the hairy cows who obviously have bad hair days all the time. :D

My dog always cuts me up whilst she's on a lead, so I don't think she'd be very good in a group walk! Plus she always has to be in front and then when she gets in front, cuts me/people up even more! It's like she's drunk or something, how she can't walk in a straight line!

Hope the weather is nice when you have your walk though. :)

Get rid of the retractable lead and put a proper one on her ;)

Tatty - the disagreement over lead walking stemmed not from whether leads were required, but that some people think it's okay not to have their dog under control. Most people would have been happy to play it by ear based on how the dogs were getting along, but one member in particular was adamant it was their right to let their dogs do as they please

The upshot of that thread was that people would make their own arrangements to walk in small groups instead of having pets group open invitation walks :(

... actually, thinking about it, if this is going to be a multi dog event, perhaps it would be best to arrange to get into smaller groups and take different routes for this walk? perhaps having several meeting points, and maybe group swap-overs? Maybe a big group walk would be better arranged when the dogs have had a couple of chances to get to know each other better?

It is possible to have multiple dogs in one space with no problem if all dogs present are trained not to bounce about in the faces of other dogs, which is only polite really, and is the safest way to bring up your dog. Quite frankly, any yappy terrier ragged by a bigger dog has usually initiated the incident in the first place - teach your dog good manners!

I know what you mean, my mum has got a scotish terrier which is very snappy, because he's small he seems to get away with it whereas if my dog was snappy he'd be looked at as dangerous.

I fear Moo may come across like one of these yappy terriers to start with, so please be patient with her. I don't know if anyone else has the same problem as me but she is fine off lead with other dogs but a yappy monster when on the lead, especially if others are not.

I too would be interested , my chinese crestie (missy moo) definately needs socializing. Due to the breed she is i never let her off the lead though as even playfull dogs can injure her with her being so little and skinny lol. Also she is quite yappy round other dogs until she is used to being with them. This kind of thing could be the experience we need.We will keep watching the thread.

Actually - due to an unpleasant incident with a couple of dogs dashing up to Brude whilst he was on his lead, and them then attacking him, coupled with having nervy, noisy dogs to stay with us, Brude's social skills could do with a bit of a brush up too :suspect:

so - given that we seem to be an ever expanding group, and given how many dogs are likely to find so many other dogs stressful if introduced too quickly, how do people feel about splitting into smaller groups to limit any potential problems?
