Rainbow Hill kennels is the only one we're happy to leave our dogs with, and we've tried all the kennels in Sheffield.

Others are 'ok', but for more than one night it has to be Rainbow Hill.

Top place. Expensive, but worth every penny in my view.

Never tried this place, so not including it in my 'all other kennels are crap' statement.

I found the runs to be very small and narrow at Moscar Kennels when we went out looking for somewhere to take our old dog for a few days, but I guess it depends on how big your dog is? I wouldn't recommend them for a Newf size dog.

There is a thread in pets section if you do a search you may find more recommendation there.

You did specify in Sheffield - this one is in Chesterfield so you are forgiven :)

The Hollows gets my vote as well.

Also if you do a search you'll probabl find a thread that was kicking around a couple of months ago about the same topic.

Search tool is your friend!!

Whilst we are on this subject, how about a good cattery? I live in the S10/S6 area, I need a good cattery during the first week of august :)

We left our dog there when we went on honeymoon. She had been in kennels before but Skew Hill were shut at that time due to their own holiday. Anyway, Molly came back with a cut nose and paw from there. Didn't pick her up, someone else did so didn't notice till she came home - she couldn't have cut herself in the car. Wouldn't go there but definately recommend Skew Hill - Molly used to love it.

Morningside Cattery in Ecclesfield/Chapeltown (just around the corner from the old Arundel Pub) Sorry don't know the road name but they're great. Can get you the number if you want. Smokey absolutely loves it there.

Been to Rainbow many times without problems, sorry if you've had a bad experience, how couldnt it have been the car? or maybe on the way to or from the car? In any case, not meaning to have a go at you - i've always found rainbow hill very good, while didnt like the look of skew hill, been a couple of times and it just stank, looked really dirty with mess (as if they hadnt been cleaned out in at least a day or two) and both times all the dogs looked like they were locked in the 'outside' bit and were freezing (not such a problem in summer I suppose)

Hollows everytime (although admittedly I have never tired another kennels). Our pampered ancient Bassett loves her stays there, and often comes home cleaner than when she left us!!

Dot and Paul are really friendly and care very genuinely about the dogs.

I guess everyone has different experiences. I love the setting at Skew Hill although I haven't been there for years so may have changed. Again rainbow hill experience was a couple of years ago so may have changed.

We've been looking for new kennels to board our 2 and have to say Dunston Lodge sounds nice - does anyone know how much it costs there per day/night? Don't mind travelling for the right place.

Looked on website for Dunston Lodge and was very impressed - wouldn't mind staying there myself! However when I rang them to ask how many and how long the walks were, they said two walks a day lasting 7 to 10 minutes. When I said this wasn't very long they said that it was only really to let them out of the kennel to stop them getting too bored!!

Looked at their website and was very impressed so I rang them to ask how many walks they were taken on a day and for how long. They said twice a day for 7 to 10 minutes! I said that wasn't enough and they said that is was really just to get them out of the kennels for a bit to stop them getting bored, but I don't think that will stop them. They need to go on long walks.

Did they tell you that they went on longer walks?

We are currently looking for a kennel for our Boxer for the weekend of the 11th April, his a big dog and whole, Dunston Lodge sounds great but again I'm a little concerned with the length of the dog walks. We've never left our dog in kennels before, I was curious that when they walk them do they do it en mass? or singularly? I walk him three times a day usually for about 45 minutes each so 7-10 minutes is a big difference.

I doubt any proper kennels would walk dogs for much more than 10 minutes a day; lets face it if they had 24 kennels (and I would have thought most have at least that) and were to walk them all an hour a time it would take a day to do it;)

I think anyone who wants there dog excersized more need to find an alternative to kennels, a dog sitter or something?

The kennels where my wife works would normally let out dogs twice a day for about 10 minutes each, to do this when they are full up would take all day and they still need a part timer coming in to do the other stuff like clean the kennels out and bath the dogs etc

If you are looking for an alternative to kennels, we can offer you a pet sitting/dog walking service. Feel free to have a look at my link and give me a call if you'd like any further details.

I have got to board my 2 soon. Does anyone have an opinion; Which is best Cliffe or Rainbow Hill?

If you offered me a million pound I wouldn't leave mine at Cliffe Kennels. Have used Rainbow before and they came back with kennel cough and fleas. We now use Foxholes and have been more than happy with the care they give the dogs and their health when they come home.

http://www.mutlins.org.uk/index.html. I would thoroughly recommend mutlins, where your dog stays in the family's home. The lady has 3 dogs of her own and is licenced to take another 6. She has a large garden, orchard and field and the door is open most of the day for the dogs to play in/out. Their are high security intercom gates to assure you that your pet will be safe, it is a large family so there is always someone in the house. My 3 have just come back from staying there-they have had a great time and didn't want leave! They came back absoloutley shattered.

2 of mine are rescue dogs and are scared of different things such as men, baseball caps, cigarretes etc but Jackie and Mike weren't fazed at all and worked with their problems, they came back being not as scared of new situations.

I would thoroughly recommend it!

The mutlins one recommended by helenasq sounds as if it would be ideal for you or someone told me about the Cinammon Trust who have people to look after dogs in such a situation as yours. The details I got were that it is Claire and Wendy who live on Poole Road, Darnall tel no. 2443239 so it might be worth giving them a call to see if they can help you out.
