Sorry this is a really boring topic! Does anyone know how much (roughly) non-students who live with students pay for council tax? We're considering living in a house woth 2 non-students and 4 students and just wondered if anyone had any ideas? I've looked on the website but it doesn't say much!
The council tax is the same amount, you get no discount for the students living there. In theory, they don't have to pay anything, but that just means those that are left have to pay the full bill instead. It's a really naff system, altrhough everyone knows how cak council tax is :(

The council website does explain the situation. (but only if you can find all the bits to put together)
Here is my understanding/experience:
Assuming that all of you are tenants with similar contracts (none has an interest in the property and none is a secure tenant), then the council regards the bill as payable by the non-students.
All things being equal, there is no discount and the total ammount to be paid depends upon the Valuation Band that the house falls into (from A-H) and will range from £808.87 to £2,426.58. (New rates (increase) will apply from April)
If there were only one non-student in a house with students then a discount would be available. This is in effect the single occupancy discount of 25%
It is not unusual for mixed houses to have agreements that cover contribution to payment of the bill by some or all of the tenants, but the council will only bill those non-students liable for it.
You can call the Council Tax office for further clarification on 273 6633 or even use the website to get them to call you or to communicate by e-mail.
Hope that helps a little.
this may be totally wrong but a girl in the benfits office told me this once. She said that if all the rooms have seperate locks on them then the landlord has to pay council tax as the tenants are classed as only renting a room, not the house.

You can read it here. (http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/council-tax/who-pays-council-tax)
Owner is only liable if he is resident in the house or there is(are) no other resident(s) (non-exempt) in the house.
Don't forget that there can be tenancy agreements which alter how monies get paid but these have nothing to do with who the Council regard as liable to be billed by them.
Mod: Try a search of the forum. There is a great thread on the subject.
This thread should be useful. (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19775&highlight=student+council+tax)
