View Full Version : Help.....cancelling phone contract??
my sister is moving in 2 weeks to america and has 11 months left on her 18 month contract with singlepoint / dial-a-phone.
they wont let her cancell is there anything she can do? as she has got far too many bills and things going on and this is really stressing her out.
any ideas or advice? no-one in the family needs the phone ...which would be the easiest thing
If she's going overseas can't she just risk it & cancel her payment method and bugger off!! Not likely to trace/follow her to Amercia???
I doubt it, I had the same probs with o2, you have to pay up to the end of the contract, its in what you sign sadly :shakes:
When you take up a contract there is a 14 day 'cooling-off' period in which you can return the phone and cancel the contract, but if she is outside this she really is stuck with paying off all line rental due up to the date of contract end.
If she wishes to remain CCJ etc free then the only thing to do is keep on paying it. Some networks will allow customers to buy-out of the contract but it depends if she has that much cash spare at the moment.
Personally, I'd be tempted to cancel the DD, put the phone in a box and post it to them and get on that plane. It's not as if she actually owes the money yet and I'd be very very surprised if they'd pay all the legal etc to pursue her in a foreign country. On the flip side, if her visa or whatever needs finalising at a later date, court judgements in the UK may have a bearing - I don't really know.
thanks for repiles.
i would cancel debit and bugger off...but she doesnt like the idea..i guess she will have to pay up the contract and get what she can for the phone...
hmph.
cgksheff 04-03-2005, 13:36 Depending on how much is involved (£15 x 11 =£165?) compared to the hassle involved is it possible to get some money back?
Pay all the monthly charges in advance.
Offer the deal to someone (on here maybe) at discount (£100?).
Transfer the billing details to their account.
OR
Offer the deal.
Transfer the contract.
Pay the discount over in cash.
And why can't she just inform them the phone is going out of the country and still use it?

She wouldn't be able to sell the contract on - I don't think that is legal in the UK. Plus I think it would be highly unlikely that the company would allow it.

And how are you going to stop the buyer from exceeding the call plan and running up a bill that your sister would be liable for?
cgksheff 04-03-2005, 15:17 That's what transferring the billing/contract was all about.
My provider, Vodaphone, are more than happy to arrange "change of ownership" of my phone should I need it. Forms are sent out and new billing details, new owner etc. provided.
Clause 11 of Singlepoint T&C:
You may not transfer this Agreement to anyone else unless we have agreed in writing beforehand and we shall not unreasonably withhold such agreement.

Ahh, that explains it
cgksheff 04-03-2005, 15:43 If she wants to do this (Singlepoint call it a "Sub. Change") she normally could do so, but Singlepoint is going over to Vodaphone and are in a transition period where changes/credit checks are not possible.
Early April is said to be the time to try again.
Like I said, "Hassle versus Cost".:gag:
