I dont ask for much!

Does any one know where i can get the following for the 8th of Sept 2007?

1. a good venue for a party, its an informal wedding reception in centre or south sheffield or peak district. ideal venue would be something like the forum!

2. A band that does great stone roses / beatles / oasis covers, or failing that a Blue Brothers band?

3. A DJ - got to be able to play old skool house (i got an ipod) plus classic motown, beatles and brit pop from the '90 to '98 era.

Looking forward all the replies......?

I have recently started up a small entertainments agency based in Sheffield and I can provide all kinds of quality entertainers for weddings, parties and corporate events, etc including jazz / swing bands, blues bands, party bands, tribute and cover bands, discos, pipers and solo acts. You can visit the site at entertainmentupnorth.co.uk.

If there are any entertainers interested in being included in my directory please email me your details to info@entertainmentupnorth.co.uk. I need to see proof of experience as well as relevant insurance details(public liability) before I can consider putting any entertainer forward for an event.

Hi, my name is Lindsay O'Malley and I have been playing music for 14 years, having studied at boarding school and at the Royal College of Music in London. I play a variety of Classical, jazz, Folk, Ska, Reggae and funk styles. I have played at a few weddings, and I can either choose a programme to suit you or what I prefer to do is ask you what some of your, or your partners favourite love songs are. I then have a consultation with you briefly to talk through any problems or thoughts and play you a couple. This can be months before, just so to make sure we are all happy and the gig is booked. Then I will meet you on the day and either play in the corner out in a garden somewhere after the speeches, or whatever suits you.

If anyone is interested in meeting me to talk about me playing at your wedding then feel free to pm me and we can have a chat about prices and availability. I am taking bookings for next summer. But may be able to fit you in this summer.

Alternatively I play with a Saxophone Quartet and also a 11 piece ska band who all take bookings.

Hiya

Long term Sheffield Forummer here! I've got lots of experience in DJing weddings so your special day will be enjoyable and fun.

I arrange to meet you in advance of the day - so we can discuss how you'd like the evening to run, you can tell me which songs you'd like to hear on the night, whether you'd want a special song playing, how much talking on the mic you'd like, and so on. At the end of the day, you tell me what you'd like to happen and I'll do my utmost to make sure it flows smoothly. Or if you haven't a clue what you want, talk to me and we can come up with a cunning plan!

I can cover the Sheffield/Rotherham/Barnsley area.

PM me to start the ball rolling.

Highway Child are a slick, semi-pro 11 piece soul show band (4x vocal, 2x sax, trumpet, bass, guitar, keyboards, drums) and have played in many venues in the city centre and in surrounding areas (West St Live, Under the Boardwalk, The Grapes, Trippets, The Casbah, Dove and Rainbow, The Mansfield Intake, The Snooty Fox in Wakefield, Sheffield Students Union, Moorfoot Tavern, The Apollo - to name a few). We play to over 2000 every payday weekend at West St Live, with a great response, and are due to play The Octagon Centre in October.

We are now seeking more bookings for weddings or parties. We can offer 40ish songs which can be split into a variety of sets (ideally 2 but works well as 3 too) and an infectious on stage energy that keeps people happy and dancing all night. We play songs made famous by The Blues Brothers and The Commitments as well as other soul classics and are more than happy to consult with you as a couple if you have specific songs you would like to hear.

Money can be discussed - PA available if necessary.

References would not be a problem should you require them... You can also see us at West Street Live, every payday weekend, (Fri and Sat).

PM me for more details.

Thanks!

I've been advertising my team of DJs on Sheffield Forum since the site pretty much began! I've got several residential discos/karaokes/rock nights and you're welcome to come down to see how I operate. Have done various shows, including weddings, for Forummers (also getting married myself next year so know what I'd want to have happen at mine and would expect to pass on the same standard to you).

I'm getting married next year and planning to have the ceremony at the registry office, then a ceilidh (like a barn-dance) in the evening. Does anyone know any reception venues big enough for dancing? It doesn't have to be posh. Could be a church hall or community centre. Any suggestions would be great as I am totally clueless about weddings!

Also if anyone knows a good ceilidh band let me know!

It depends on what you're after, I've done small intimate locations, such as local pubs because the couple wanted to be in familiar surroundings with their friends and I've done larger country houses before.

The difficulty with using an in house DJ is that you don't necessarily know what you're going to get, their range of music, etc. You can't suss them out in advance. I try to speak to the couple before and undertake a consultation with them, encourage them to come to one of my shows so they can see me in action and give me a list of songs they would especially like to hear.

My advice is to say to the hotel that it's your special day and you want to have the party to meet your requirements. They ought to offer the consultation which I offer, if not then tell them that unless you can use your own DJ then they're going to lose your business - stamp your feet and speak to someone higher up the chain. You're the customer.

I'm doing a Wedding Anniversary party for a biker this weekend at a biker's pub. Can't wait!!!

We have "Roger the badger" for our wedding. What a great time we had. Hope yours is as good as ours was.

There is a hall at the top of Stannington. Church street i think it is. Its a very big hall divided into two, one for food as we did our own and one for the guests, tables etc included.
They will put a bar on by a local pub for a small cost.
There is a kitchen...it is a brilliant place.
I remember the charged being £400+ for the day. 9am-12midnight.

Hi,
does anyone have any recommendations for local bands to have at a wedding? We're after something jazzy, funky, or reggae ideally - no cheesy covers and no Indie/Rock (at my fiance's request!). And we're on a tight budget so the more affordable the better of course.

Thanks in advance. x

23-10-2007, 11:30 PM
the price quoted by a dj is dependent on distance time & the requirements of the client if they wanted to book a dj for just an evening party it would of course cost less than an all day event.
each wedding is unique so the dj must consult with the couple for there requirements .so you cannot just say the price will be x amount . at the end of the day its a once in a lifetime thing so you get what you pay for .
i always consult with the couple several times to update any special requirements.
its not just turn up play music get paid go home .

Hi,

Does anyone know of a wedding DJ who could play a set list that we had put together along with a few classic wedding songs (build me up buttercup/ymca etc!!!). We have quite a few songs we know we want played at our wedding but unsure how to go about it. Not all the songs we want are the mainstream songs you hear at weddings/birthdays etc. But we also want to include something for everyone, so I suppose i'm looking for someone who could put their own stuff together aswell as taking instruction from me!!! Without sounding like an idiot we are looking for something a little bit funkier than the normal wedding DJ.

Any ideas???

You can start now. I'm sure bands will be happy to put the date in their diary. Bands do sometimes split up though!!

If you're having a band I'd also advise you to have some music played before and after they play, otherwise it'll be a bit quiet! Depending on the band, they may have some music they can run through their system, alternatively if you want to be able to hear the music you want, give requests and so on then you'll need a DJ. If you choose to go down that route, then drop me a line, I'll be happy to help you out.

Hi there, Highway Child are a local R&B Soul band. We play covers of classic R&B Soul songs from artists such as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, and also cover more Funky artists such as James Brown, Kool and the Gang and Sky and the family Stone. All done tastefully, (not cheesy). We have played various different functions, including The Octagon for Sheff Uni student's ball. Hi, my OH and I have been looking at a band too and most people have been quoting us £700-£1500 depending on how big (and experienced) the band are. That's usually for 2 hours split into 2 x 1hr sets.

What kind of band are you looking for? We've been looking for a swing/easy listening band which tend to have more musicians in them so that might have pushed the price up a bit but I think you will still be looking at £450+ for a function band that have experience of doing weddings.

Hi, I'm looking for a string trio to play for a very short time (approx 1 hour / just 3 or 4 pieces) in a tiny venue in Lincolnshire, for my wedding in August 2008. I've been looking around on the internet, and the prices quoted for professional groups are a bit out of my price range! As a violinist myself, I appreciate that this cost is to pay for the quality, and 'behind the scenes' practice and preparation... Anyway... as I can't really play at my own wedding :hihi: are there any amateur or semi-professionals out there that fit the bill?

HI I know its a minefiled getting a decent band so personal recommendation really does help! i found out about the fabulous Nicola Farnon and band through a friends husband, they played 2 sets of 45 mins with great music on the pa inbetween.

They are the most delightfull swing/jazz type set up and cost us a wopping £650!!! (I think we pushed for the lowest price possible??) But to be honest they were worth every penny, there is nothing worse than your evening being spoilt by the wrong music!

She has her own website which you can contact her on I believe, just search on her name.

Hope this helps some??

I was just wondering what kind of price we'd be looking for to hire a DJ for our wedding reception, we're getting married on a tight budget so i'm wanting to plan and budget enough money for the night.

We'd be looking to hire a DJ from about 4pm until late.

Does anyone know roughly?

Thanks in advance.

Why do people post PM sent lol sure the member will get a prompt to say you have a PM.

If you are on a tight budget I'd suggest having your Disco from 8pm to keep costs down, also remember cheapest ain't always the best

Nice to see you are on the ball Bruno.

and yes you are right

you get what you pay for and reducing the times will reduce the costs involved

Stripper
Bingo
A quiz
Jelly wrestling
Dominos
Salsa dancing lessons
Line dancing
Murder mystery evening
Bucking bronco
Play your cards right
Hide and seek
Strip poker
Speed dating for the guests
Children's party games, eg pin the tail on the donkey, pass the parcel, musical chairs
Beetle drive

They're off the top of my head, if you want some more you know where to come :)

We are having a magician and are also thinking of getting either a giant connect four game, giant snakes and ladders or giant Jenga, but we haven't decided which one yet. They are costing £35 to hire and thought it would be different. I think a bouncy castle for the kids would be good too, but my htb keeps reminding me that we do have a budget to stick to... oh well!

A wedding i went to last year had a magician. He was fantastic. Came round each table as we were eating - which i thought would be a bit annoying - but actually worked really well. Good for breaking the ice on tables of people who don't know each other.

Im sure alot of you will find that when booking a hotel they will insist you have thier resident DJ.

This is fine if you are happy to go along with that choice, but what I don't agree with is the price they charge, as you will find that most will add thier bit on and add vat on your total bill, most DJ's are not vat registered so you are paying tax what you don't have to.

One thing you can ask is why you have to have thier DJ, the most probable answer is liability insurance, a few of us do have liability insurance, for example I'm covered upto £5 million, and all equipment is pat tested to the legal requirement.

So if you know of a DJ who has liability insurance this can save you quite a lot of money.

We went to sort stuff out with our venue last night. The wedding organiser recommended using their resident DJ as she thought it would be the cheapest option (£200 for 5 hours)

Does this sound good value or do you think I should shop around?

willman

the biggest advantage for the venue with a resident dj is that everything is set up.
in my day we used to turn up plug the decks in and away went, in the working mens clubs we used to plug into the pa.system for some of our events so only the mixer and decks were needed.
the in house dj @ Aston Hall has a full lighting rig and system set up - so if you use him the jobs set up for you, if you use someone else who's gonna take the resident rig down.

The in house DJ's don't have a permanent set up, this is because the rooms are used for conferences in the day, and I know that for sure at Aston Hall, The wedding gusts don't have to set the gear up lol, and it's upto the resident DJ to remove his mobile set up

Our venue have a retainer arrangement with their resident DJ so if we don't have him we have to pay £95 anyway. He's £195 in total I think. Not sure If we pay the venue or pay him direct.

Why is there a retainer? ask to see the contract between hotel and DJ. I would like to bet part of that is the profit the hotel would make by you havin thier DJ.

I will also be that there is no written contract between any hotel and DJ.

I know I been in the business long enough

Star_sprinkl

You might be right but they do have events most weekends for which they need the DJ so I think the retainer is to make sure that he is available every Friday and Saturday all year. We've heard him before and he's quite good so we aren't too worried.

Thats great if you are happy with with that, the reason I said ask to look at the contract between hotel and DJ, is because there won't be one.

The point I'm makingis that for your big day you should be able to have whatever you want, without a hotel saying "you can only have our DJ" or "yes you can bring your own, but you will have to pay us £95.

I'm sure many people have experienced this, and it's because the hotel is wanting to squeeze that few more quid out of your pocket.

For some reason Uncles seem to like dancing to 'Baggy Trousers'

We play alot of Commitments and Blues Brothers classics, which always pleases a crowd.

We have a repetoire of around 50 songs which you can choose from for your event.

We also have a couple of gigs coming up locally, which you could come to, and see what you think.

Hi Katy, thanks for the interest.

How much we charge would depend on the event, (wedding, private party etc).

It also depends on how far we have to travel and whether the venue we play at has a PA (the sound equipment needed for a live gig)

With this info I can give you a price.

PS If the event is for charity and has the right promotion, we sometime do gigs free of charge.

Also can you give me an idea of price, it will be in Hassop Hall near Bakewell and I'm more than convinced they don't have any sound equipment!

Oh PS the first dance is 'Earth Angel' (as in from Back to the Future) and I'd love a live band to do it as a sax would just be awesome. Also 'our' song is Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty, any chance it could be played?

professional bands usually charge £50 - £200 per head for each band member and a sound engineer, any more than this usually suggests a better than average pedigree. This cost usually but not always includes travel, P.A etc. If booked through an agency an adiitonal fee is usually applicable. My experience of cheaper bands that i dont know is one of unreliability caused i think by charging prices which are unsustainble. A professional party D.J is in the region of £30 - £40 an hour inc set up and breakdown. Occasional gems can be found that are cheaper than this but the general rule is the cheaper the price the higher the risk !! Also i have never seen a band that are not hungry/thirsty so check what they expect on this score if the money is tight

Our venue would be great and the lady who showed us round said they normally put on some food for the band, so all we really need is the band now!

One reason is that some of our friends just had their wedding at the same venue with a DJ, and I want to make our wedding a bit different from the normal DJ that most weddings seem to have now. Just want a real feel good band, that can play Earth Angel!

I also think you should consider hiring a magician. It is a great ice-breaker. Absolutely perfect for weddings.

Actually I have had the opportunity of seeing quite a few magicians in action over the years, having attended numerous corporate events and trade shows during the course of my work.

Of all the magicians I have seen so far, from a shear technical content point of view, the most memorable has to be a local magician called Nigel Francis.

I have seen him at several events now, including the City Hall, Cutlers Hall and twice at Baldwin's Omega.

I specifically remember him performing some really mindblowing stuff with coins as well as some very clever card tricks.

A friend of mine saw him do a demo at the Doncaster Racecourse Wedding Fayre last month and booked him on site. I am also considering getting him to work on my company's "Trade Show Exhibition Stand" later this year.

I've looked at your website, there's very little on it. You have two artists to promote, no news and little to encourage anyone to register with you or to offer reassurance or persuasion to anyone thinking of booking through you. I'd really recommend giving this site an overhaul as you're going to get little interest from it as it stands. Please take this comment with the spirit that it's meant - to encourage and help.

Hi I am looking for a DJ to play at our wedding next July......as I have never had to book a DJ before in my life I don't really know what I am looking for or how much I should be paying for a decent reliable service. Can anyone offer any advice or give me any recommendations??

Thanks

Hi all

I play the violin at weddings and have already posted else where in Sheffield forum.

If you want a violinist to play at your wedding then I'm your man. I have a varied list of pieces suited for weddings. I work with you to choose the right music. If I don't have the particular music then I can usually obtain it.

Send me a pm if interested.

Kind regards

Alan

I am an experienced violinist who can play for weddings whether it be in the church, at the reception, the wedding breakfast or as light background music.

I can play requested repertoire and charge competitive rates.

Please don't hesitate to contact me via PM.

Many thanks.

I've pm'd you but your inbox is full :D so my messages may not have been delivered yet.

Whichever DJ you choose a really good idea before your wedding is to ask a group of friends/family with a cross section of ages to all write down their top 10 songs that they would like to dance to and pass these on to the DJ. That way the DJ will have a good idea of the type of songs that are going to keep the dancefloor full.
