I am relocating to Sheffield and have recently viewed a couple of properties on the new Standish estate.

I really liked the estate and houses themselves but am very concerned about the landfill site. After doing a bit of research on the Internet it seems opinions are pretty mixed. I also can't find a lot of up to date information about the current situation with the site.

I would really appreciate any information from anyone who lives / has lived on this estate. Are there any problems with bad odours, vermin, noise, health issues etc.? How close is the waste likely to come to the estate and is this waste still toxic? Does anyone know what kind of timescale is currently being proposed for closure of the site? It's also a bit worrying that there seem to be so many properties on the estate up for sale at the moment. Is everyone trying to escape?!

Just moved from Standish Gardens in September.

As much as I loved the estate, the lure of WPV was overpowering. Can I be totally honest? The houses are overpriced, dont buy on there at the moment.

Plus, and it may sound racist, it seems to be becoming very Asian. The majority of the houses sold recently have gone to Asian families. One guy has 3 wives and a shed load of unruly kids!!!

Thanks for the feed back ;)

We’ve viewed a few houses on the estate and they were all the same style (4 bedroom detached with int garage) however the prices varied from £180k to £210k. The only difference between the houses we viewed was the location within the estate and a slight difference in garden sizes... oh and some of them over look the landfill from the rear of the house which obviously isn’t helping with the sale of the house :gag:

Can anyone recommend a similar estate, ie; a new'ish development which is not too far from the city centre and has good public transport links near by (bus, tram or train)? We were originally looking for a 3/4 bedroom semi but having seen Standish we now realise a 4 bedroom detached may be within our budget too.

A friend has just bought a house on the Gateway estate in Handsworth, you can see them as you drive down the parkway on the left. He looked at the ones in Darnal and the Gateway ones are much better build quality and it's a nicer location. You cas get a good deal as he got some discount, then fees paid then various other things.. Don't get your mortgage through their financial advisor though as he seemed a bit crap.

Wadsley Park Village has good access to both tram and bus, plus it is a nice place to live :)

A couple of 3 bed semis on WPV for sale circa 200k.

We moved into a 3 storey 4 bed semi from a detached on Standish - thought the privacy would go out the window but tbh we dont hear the neighbours and they dont hear us so almost like being in a detached.

Have a look at the Saxton Mee website - thats where a few of them are selling thru.

Does anyone else have any views about the Standish area?

I don't live on the Standish estate and therefore am possibly not qualified to answer, but if I were looking for a new house I would not be looking in that area. Not just the estate itself, but the whole area is not considered to be one of the better areas in Sheffield. I can see how the houses may appear to be a bargain, but most bargain houses are usually bargains for a reason.

Have you thought about renting for 6 months until you get to know Sheffield and which areas are good and not so good, then making your decision then? It would be a shame to buy based on price, then find that it isn't your ideal area, and possibly find your house very difficult to sell on again.
