View Full Version : Any yarn recs for really really nice bedsocks...
pixiepear 23-02-2008, 17:05 I want to knit my mum some bedsocks for mother's day (yup, cutting it fine! But i will knit like a demon every evening if I have to :)) Her feet get cold and she usually wears 2 pairs of tatty socks to bed. I had in mind to knit some very simple, loose slouchy socks, using a very basic pattern that I already have, and to use a really luxurious special yarn. It needs to be at least DK weight or aran, and I would consider a chunkier yarn. I want the socks to be very soft, warm and cosy, the colour isn't so important, they mainly need to feel lovely against feet! So far, I have thought about: silk/merino/cashmere blends. I notice there are a lot of alpaca yarns around, I have never used alpaca before but have heard that it is really soft and warm, so if anyone else has tried it i would be keen to hear their opinion. My plan was to descend on the Wool-Baa on Monday pm but I would welcome some ideas before I go, if only to help me stay focussed when I am there, otherwise i will end up looking at everything and getting distracted from the task in hand...
Glitter Star 23-02-2008, 19:42 Jill has some gorgeous Baby llama at the moment and I'm thinking of making some fabulous bed socks in that. There are some beautiful colours as well.
I might be wrong here, but I'm not sure the Wool Baa is open on Mondays.
pixiepear 23-02-2008, 21:02 I have checked the website and you are right, it is closed on mondays...never mind, i can knit fast...may need to go for an aran or chunky now so it grows faster!
Baby llama sounds interesting, i am guessing that is like alpaca (trying to picture in my head what they look like)
Quite keen to try something different like that. My mum asked for something soft, warm, comfy and loose, and defuinitely not too tight, as her legs and feet sometimes get puffy. I am going to try a basic pattern for stocking stitch socks but use a thicker yarn, larger needles and no ribbing.I'm thinking of adding a picot edge at the top. I'll aim for knee length so they can slouch down, so long as the top fits the calf it doesn't matter if the ankle bit looks baggy, guess I can always drop down a needle size when i get to the ankle bit if it looks likeit would be too baggy.
Good luck with your bedsocks, Glitter Star and thanks for your help.
Lucy-Lastic 23-02-2008, 21:11 The baby Lllama is yummy - I knitted my gretel slouchy hat from it. It is indeed very warm and soft with a slight fluff to it. I found it nice to knit with and I really like how it looked knitted up:) Pricewise its not too bad and it also has the feelgood factor as you donate to a peruvian schooling charity for each ball sold:D
pixiepear 23-02-2008, 21:31 Is it the Mirasol Miski? Have looked at it online, sounds like this is the one I need, and I am liking the lilac colour! Looks perfect - soft and warm and knits on 5 mm, so it ticks all the boxes. Also, not frighteningly expensive either. I usually spend ages dithering but think this one is it. Thank you!

Yes thats the one:) Jill has quite a few colours in so hopefully she has that one!
Peakwool has some super soft alpaca. Probably have to use it double to get it chunkyish though
littlemissy 24-02-2008, 19:41 I have used Debbie Bliss cashmerino aran before and found it yummy.
beansforyou 24-02-2008, 20:34 I'd like to mention Artesano Alpaca, Hummingbird range mainly, 150g is around £12.99 and enough for a pair of socks, and is gorgeously soft, in beautiful colours.
knitbird 24-02-2008, 22:13 I like the RYC cashcotton, it's in a 4-ply or double knit. I have made bedsocks from Peakwool's alpaca used singly for my brother though, and they were wonderfully warm and soft. I really should have "accidentally" made them to fit me!
pixiepear 25-02-2008, 12:09 thank you for all the recs - so much lovely wool to knit, so little time! I shall be checking stuff out online for future ref, due to the extremely tight deadline for mothers day I shall stick with the Miski for this pair, especially as Jill is coming to my rescue with it! I am thinking of changing my name to "needles of fire" as I am sure the needles will be smokin' by the weekend. By the way, I have never before felt the need for bedsocks, personally, but I confess I am planning to make myself a pair too, after mum's, and i think it is purely because i love the look and feel of really nice yarn. Is there a name for this? My husband keeps telling me I have a "wool habit" and I think I have!
