View Full Version : Do pushy sales people put you off buying ?
People who call me on the phone or knock on my door trying to sell me anything ... are totally wasting their time.
I wouldn't buy anything from a pushy sales person on principle. If I want / need to buy something ... I'll be the one that goes out and shops around for what I want.
It's better not to buy on the doorstep...if telesales are bothering you the TPS can get your number removed from their call lists.
The one thing worse than being harassed in this way is being made to do the harassing...I've left more than one job due to the relentless pressure of supervisors to sell, sell, SELL!!!

Definately can't abide pushy sales, puts me right off.
I won't buy "on the doorstep" as a matter of principle...
...and there isn't much chance of me ever going back to CarCraft or whatever it's called either. The sales people there are (or at least were the last time I was there) like limpits.

jackthedog 03-03-2005, 10:18 Carcraft must have the pushiest sales teams in the country.
The reps at our place are bad enough, but they are pussycats compared with Carcraft. Ridiculous.
Sorry to Hijack slightly, but does the Telephone Preference Service thing actually work? How do you activate it?
Door to door people have stopped bothering me since I stuck a notice up saying no thanks to salesmen and commissioned agents.
I still get people jumping in front of me in town or Hillsborough precinct now and again. What did get me mad one time was someone collecting on behalf of a hospital research unit. I'd already said no thanks as I already help out a couple of charities but she targetted me again as I past on my way back down High St for my bus. Only I didn't realise she was talking to me - crowded street and all - until I heard her call out 'ignorant cow'. Then I noticed her looking straight at me.
We had a few words and I said I'd be in touch so I hope with that I spoilt her day as she had mine.
It's all very well having collectors for a worthy cause but if these people behave in such a manner it isn't going to do much for them is it?
LoopyLou 03-03-2005, 11:00 if i walk into a shop and the sales person hangs around, bugs me etc, I just walk out, they will get the message eventually.
and don't even get me started on the people who have to stand in the doorway to wish you a "good morning" argh!!!!!!!!!

Yes. It stops 99% of the calls I used to get.

It takes a few weeks to take effect.
Door to Door - Let them knock forever, usually twice before they give up and try the mug next door :D
Telesales - Answer, leave the phone of the hook and let them talk to themselves :) Come back 20 mins later and place the handset back on the receiver ;)
The worst sales people Ive encountered are CarCraft and Reg Vardy
They dont take no for an answer, Mr Vardy called me twice in a hour at work to see if I had made my mind up to purchase a car from them, I didn't in the end

I can't understand why sales people are so pushy - it must put loads of people off buying from them, surely?
Like LoopyLou, if a sales person bugs me, I deliberately don't buy on principle, even if I'd kinda like the product. I feel if I do buy, it'll only encourage them to hassle other customers or me another time.
Sales staff at make-up counters in department stores are notorious for jumping on you if you so much as look at their counter. How much commission must they lose, as their behaviour just encourages people to avoid them?
I've noticed a trend towards this in the Body Shop too - over-solicitous assistants aren't helpful, they're a nuisance. Must be company policy there now though - I've noticed it here, and in Edinburgh and Leeds branches too.
OK, rant over!

Excellent - thanks cgk
I generally don't answer the door, I do have a look outside and see if it's the Post Office van though, just in case it's a parcel.
Most people I want to talk to phone me in advance to let me know they are coming, they also know I'm not a fan of door to door and if they have dropped by without notice will ring from outside the house or stand where I can see them
The reason for this - I've had more double glazing sales people at the door than I can shake a stick at, mostly because I live near one of their bases. Kids wanting sponsor money, most of these kids I've never even set eyes upon, unless it's Bonfire Night and they want a pound/ Halloween, they want sweets. Then there's the people with special needs who are sent out to sell dusters and other household stuff, the last one I answered to was crying. She'd really had enough so I suggested she went home, when I tried to help she had no idea where she lived. Who on earth sends them out? Then the energy/telephone/sky companies.
And finally the gardener who had a look round the garden before knocking on the door, offered to sort it out, I said no thanks, he tried to break in the next day! ******!
And in shops, it often puts me off but I can cope if they go away again after I say I'm just looking.
Yes, nothing worse than been hassled when your trying to browse in peace. Carcraft is a fine example with pushy salesman trying to inflate their commission by any means necessary.
A.B.Yaffle 04-03-2005, 01:11 Mobile phone shops are among the worst culprits for pushy salespeople. On several occasions I have been in one looking at the different phone deals, and assistants always come up and start telling me which I would be best off with buying. Last time I just walked out while he was in the middle of a sentence.
'This is our most popular model...'
'Is it now? So why do you think it'll suit my purposes?'
'.....???....'
'You haven't asked me what I need it to do'
'Well this is our most popular model'
'Does it do xxxxxx?'
'Well, it's our most popular model'
'I'll have a brochure, thank you'
'We sell more of these than any other model'
'Get me the brochure'
'Erm, we do sell quite a lot of these'
(flicks through pages) 'I need it to do xxxxxx, so I'll need this model'
'Oh yes, that's quite good....'
'But I won't be buying it from you' (Paddington stare, leaves shop)
I always purchase mobile phones online, after a fair bit of research. It eliminates the problem of confronting the sales people in these outlets.
A.B.Yaffle 04-03-2005, 02:04 I bought my latest mobile half price from Argos, but I'm one of those who likes to look in all the shops first to make sure I get the best deal. When the assistants come and ask if they can help and I tell them I am just looking, they should leave me to look instead of trying to force me to pay about 10 times the amount I would normally pay per month! Don't they realise it is going to put people off going into their shops again?

sales assistants usually only hang around you if they think you look suspicious and likely to be walking out with half the stock in your massive shoulder bag :D
What we really like to do is totally ignore you and stand in a group around the till laughing and talking about what we did at the weekend ...:D
comet is a place to avoid for dodgy sales staff once went in for a toaster which cost about 10 quid they only wanted me to have a extended guarantee thing on it utter madness:( :( :(
