We moan about Look Leeds, Christa Ackroyd's latest haircut, and Cat Stuck In Tree headlines in the Sheffield Star

But, in this day of internet news, telephones, general office gossip (and SF ;)) is the old fashioned media on a downward slide?

Do they serve much of a purpose any more?

I think we should dispense with Sheffield Star and just have a village newsletter. It has very little in it apart from self serving 'columnists' who think we really care about their opinions.

All in all we have very little news but lots of peoples perception of it.

It's a good point.

I'm not sure that any sense of local community is engendered by local media anyway - even if you're living in the catchment area - because communities are now determined more by how people choose to define themselves rather than how the BBC, IBA, OFCOM or the Press define us.

I think.... :)

The Manchester rags are ok - and MOST of the big city newspapers, at least, Unlike the Star, they are not tacked together by a Cromwelian editorial staff - whos Witch Hunter General must have a desk cluttered with the rank skulls of good and innocent men.

The semi-literate sops that masquerade as journalists in the Telegraph buildings, should be sent out to deepest Basra imo, although, I expect they would have difficulty finding a newsworthy story even there..

I have been known to read one if it has been bought by someone else then discarded on a train etc.
It can be amusing sometimes, to read their inconsequential cr*p - but only if I'm extremely bored and have no other distraction.
