View Full Version : Charged £5 to pay a bill?!
went in yesterday to pay a 50 quid bill with my yorkshire bank switch card,i was told if i went outside and withdrew the money from the ATM it would be cheaper as she would have to charge me a fiver to use the switch card over the counter..WTF that all about then:confused:    i'd been stood in the que ages while some old dear was weighing her copper in and was ****in fuming that she expected me do go and que again.......the bill is still here.
Your lucky you can actually pay bills in your bank, the Halifax "don't do Giro credits", so I can't pay any bills there.
I did suggest to the nice person behind the counter that they contact British Gas and get them to change the bill to say "pay by Giro credit at any bank, except Halifax".
Banks just make up the rules as they go along.

my missis runs a cafe, she banks at the abbey on fargate..she was told last week, from this week they won't accept no more than 4 bags of coins, how can she bank the weeks takings like that.........muppets
chocotiger 03-03-2005, 09:26 I too was angry with Yorkshire bank charges so Ive switched to First Direct Bank...Its a sister company of HSBC. Never had any problems. Helpful staff & free text messages updating me on my bank balance. Best move I ever did

Tell your missis to open an account at the Post Office Kirky, they accept all cash, and it costs nothing to pay in then write a cheque into her other abbey account, it saved me a lot of money doing it that way.
Captain_Scarlet 03-03-2005, 11:32 What annoys me with Yorkie Bank is how slow the cash machines are when they swallow and spit your card... Sooooo slooooow !

Moved to First Direct a few months ago. They do hit you with charges if you exceed your overdraft, £30 is standard fee, and they never ever waive it under any circumstances (I keep my balance above £2K, and on one of my money moving days I went overdrawn by £3 and they charged me £30!! >.<)
Still, don't have a problem with them.

Me too! I LOVE first direct! I've been with them for over seven years, and not a minutes trouble!
The text message banking wakes me up at 6am each morning; mind you it makes me laugh 'cos when my phone beeps Peter always remarks on the fact that the 'skint text' has arrived!

Or LloydsTSB, Alliance and Leicester, Barclays or The Cooperative - all of these banks building socities allow you to access your money at a Po.

The other big advantage if the Post office is that there are branches dotted about all over the place, no need to go into town to pay in.
fnkysknky 03-03-2005, 14:50 Just be grateful you don't bank with Gnatwest - got a business account with them and it's the pits - will be moving ASAP when I have time to find a decent one, any suggestions?
I have found Halifax to be useful in the past.
The internet banking facility has proven useful.
Might subscribe to which magazine though, to check out what is what!
Still do not have a one account you see.
:(

I have heard many horror stories of Natwest (and Abbey) - peoples' money going walkies, correspondence being sent to the incorrect address - I'd rather go back with Midland than bank with Natwest or Abbey - Abbey National lost £2million worth of money, and think they can pull the wool over peoples' eyes by changing their name to Abbey.

I don't really like HSBC/Midland, but dad has found them excellent for his current account and business account; another great place is Nationwide.

jackthedog 03-03-2005, 15:50 LMAO at the link I used to get to this thread! :D
PS. In case anyone is interested his original title was:
Yorkshire bank......................
(Notice the dots to beat the character limit).
Off the top of my head, I would have used:
Yorkshire bank changing £5 to pay bills?!
or 101 other more descriptive titles which you can easily write without even needing to worry about character limits.
beansfeast 03-03-2005, 15:58 While you're reading geoff, why is there a limit in the first place if you don't mind me asking?
Because the like of kirky would have just used 'bank' in the past as some users ignored our polite notices to use descriptive titles.
Using a title that explains what your topic is about generally helps get you better quality replies (i.e. it doesn't attract the 'ooh what's this' brigade) and save us all time. We therefore help to encourage people by ensuring they have to write at least a few words.
PS. This is not really a 'lets pick on kirky' thing, but as one of our most prolific users he makes a good example of someone who knows the guidelines and continues to ignore them for some unknown reason. There are others.

The Halifax isn't a clearing bank, infact it isn't a bank it is a PLC. That is the reason that you can't pay Giro credits there.

Before I get shouted at for going off topic - anyone got a Lloyds TSB business account, I've heard a few good things??

She needs to open a business account I suppose. Unless she already has one , in which case the ABbey should not be refusing the coins.

Doesn't PLC stands for Public Limited Company?

I think its 'licensed', although I could be wrong. Please someone put me out of my misery!
on_the_edge 03-03-2005, 19:14 maybe this will help...
public limited company...
Company registered as a plc under the provisions of the Companies Act 1980. The company's name must carry the words ‘public limited company’ or initials ‘plc’ and must have authorized share capital over £50,000, with £12,500 paid up – paid to the company by the shareholders. Plcs may offer shares to the public and are more tightly regulated than limited companies. Converting a private limited company into a public one has advantages, such as the ability to raise share capital. However, it does have potential disadvantages, such as being subject to the scrutiny of the financial media and city analysts (the company's financial records must be available for any member of the public to scrutinize). If the founder of a plc perceives the company share price to undervalue the company they may take the company private once more, as Richard Branson did with Virgin in 1989.
cgksheff 03-03-2005, 19:15 Public Limited Company
A company which may have an unlimited number of shareholders and offer its shares to the wider public (unlike a limited company). Must have a minimum share value of £55,000. Some Plcs are listed on the London Stock Exchange.
as opposed to a Limited Company which is privately owned.
I was aware that a Public Limited Company means that the company has shares and may be listed on the London Stock Exchange and all that, but what I didn't quite see was the relevent of one not being able to credit a giro due to being a PLC which is what being implied in Bonny's post.
That is why I responded with "Doesn't PLC stands for Public Limited Company?" just in case I was barking up the wrong tree.
Well, that how I read it but I am not sure if that what was meant?
Bonny, did you mean it is a building society?
I am confused...
Why doesn't Kirky know what a 'descriptive title' is?
what is one?

Unless the Halifax have changed all their policies since yesterday the customer service person was wrong (they probably meant the following)The only way you can pay a bill (other than a Halifax bill) is by a one off standing order. This can take up to six days to get to the institution it is intended for.
There is no other way that you can pay a bill, other than a Halifax visa, over the counter at any Halifax branch.
The Halifax are not a clearing bank (which operates on the Giro system). It does not have a lot of banking facilities that real banks have. It is a PLC which is somewhere between a building society and a bank.

I've got a lloyds TSB business account for my ltd co. I love 'em, they're always on the end of the phone when you need them. They screw up only very occasionally, but admit it and then fix it pretty quick.
They've been really good to me.
barclays 07-03-2005, 17:23 You can only usually pay your utility bills at the bank you hold your account with for free. Most banks charge non-customers for doing this. I would suggest direct debits as an alternative, because most providers offer discounts to the consumer as their costs are kept lower by doing it.
Please visit any branch of Barclays for futher information in sheffield.
