My brother Brian drove the small 3 wheeler truck back & forth to the Carlings wharehouse all day long, he married a lass called Joan who worked in the lab, I first worked in the W/house then on a palletizer in the cellar, anyone who worked there would remember these names, Barry Ward, Terry Marshall,Trevor & Brian Powell, Derek & Brian Turner [not related] Terry Fletcher, Frank ? & Mick who used to charge the batteries, Jack the cellar boss And Tony Fenton, who had a problem and couldn't stop shaking, not forgetting Bobby Graham, an Aussie who was working his way around the world, I bumped into him shortly after arriving here, by accident.
There were a lot of couples that paired off who worked there & it was a great place to work.

I was due to replace the Security Manager there, His name was Colin, with the glasses. I knew him in the navy police but cannot for the life of me remember his surname. He lived off Middlewood Road, just past Dudley Rd. Unfortunately the death knell was rininging for the old place and I never started.

That would have been full circle for me, as a kid I used to play all over the back edge and down in Beeley Woods when the brewery was called Hope & Anchor.

Sorry, they can't remember Buff......

I grew up on Dudley Road in the 70s and 80s. I well remember the pong which used to come over the river from the Charringtons brewery and the barking of the dogs from the Niagra ground.

The name of the security manager was Colin Rich, who has sadly passed away.He lived at the top of Harris road, near to Marcliffe School. One name that was mentioned was Barry Ward who passed away last year.Whenever the builders were in the brewery and before the cement had dried, someone would write Wardy in it.This was every where round the brewery, and no one ever got caught doing it.
By the way it was 14 years this month that the brewery closed.
It was the first brewery in England to brew Carling ,and the first to keg Stones. In it's hayday about 350 people worked on site and coaches used to bus employees up and down the "Lane" along with Batchelor's workers.
One other name mentioned was Mick ,this was Mick Scott who has been involved with Jubilee Football team for many years. He now works at the mobility dept at NGH.

One other name mentioned was Mick ,this was Mick Scott who has been involved with Jubilee Football team for many years. He now works at the mobility dept at NGH.

That's him, he was always soccer mad and used to dribble anything that was left on the floor.
I can't remember the bloke's name that Mick worked with, but he was a keen photographer and lived at Longley, one day Mick & him started a distillery in their little workshop, so instead of using the equipment to make distilled water for the batteries, they made whiskey, :hihi:
There were 3 palletizers in the cellar, the Turners worked on no 1,
Barry Ward & Terry Gods gift to women Marshall, ha ha, worked no 3 & Terry Fletcher & I [Trevor] worked on no 2, Shakey Tony Fenton and Roger ? hand stacked on no 4.
Frank ? was Terry Fletchers brother in law & loaded the pallets for the wharehouse, he took over my job after I left in 1965.
Can't ever remember there being a bus for the brewery, I remember the one for Bachelors though ?

You have just jogged my memory feederfil, so I have had to edit my other posts, it was Terry Marshall who worked alongside Barry Ward, in the same department as me, one of his brothers worked in the brewing dept, Tony I think ? they used to wear white overalls.
I remember the majority of the names, but can't put faces to them these days, I now remember that it was Terry Fletcher that worked alongside me, his brother in law Frank worked in the cellar with us too.
Terry Fletcher worked in the bottling dept before moving into the cellar & used to clean out the bottle washing machines every evening on overtime.
Was it Ian Sedgwick that had a trial for goalkeeper with Sheff Wed ?

no,they tested him for parkinsons and all sorts of diseases, but couldn,t find anything at all wrong with him,so maybe it was because he was highly strung.
Tony was a one for the ladies, unfortunately,he couldn,t be right with em,so thats how i became his carer,he did ,however, possess a really quick wit,and some of his stories were legendary. Again I remember some of those names, I was only there for just over 2 years, I knew quite a few of the girls there, as some came from the same area as me [Shirecliffe]
It was quite hard working in the cellar as it was a continuous process, so the only times we got to mix or meet others was when we had a major breakdown or at lunchtime on the footy field etc.
I remember an old bloke that always seemed half tanked, I've no idea what his job was, or his name, but he was all over the brewery & used to take bets for people, any idea ?

Just came across this thread from a while back.

I remember most of these people from working there, early 70s till it closed.

Others I remember are Bob Stancil, Joan his secretary, Michael Collins, Harold Sunderland, Vic Keen, Pete Crossley, Harry Davidson, Jim Rivers, Raymond Straw, Michael Parker.

Sheila Pasley was chief chemist, others in the lab were Karen and John Ollerenshaw, Nigel Turnbull, Mick Ashmore, Rachel Harman who married Peter (can't remember his surname), Alwyn Raynor and Pam Jackson who's dad ran one of the bottling lines i think.

Tony Allen used to work in the lab years ago, left to work at Runcorn, then opened a small brewery in Preston Brook. Last I heard he'd got a sizeable place near Manchester called the Phoenix Brewery Company.

David Leake, who died suddenly in 1980, used to be chief electrician along with Bernard ? and Keith ?. Ron Roebuck took over then. Harry Pugh was chief engineer, before him it was Scottish man, can't remember his name, was it Eddy?

Stan Collingwood (or Con Stalingrad as he was sometimes known) worked in conditioning, along with Philip ?, Neville ? who lost his hearing, David Ashforth and of course Eric Tewson. Martin Thomas was conditioning manager.

June Bailey? and Christine Crapper were on the bottling lines when I was there. And Johnny Horrax used to walk round with his long gloves and ear protectors checking the pasteuriser levels.

Miss Etty was there when I started, but I remember a Welsh woman being the nurse later on.

And I do remember the Cutler's Hall nights. I was there the night someone went over the balcony. Think they also damaged one of the nearby bank's windows.

Wonder what happened to them all?

It's the only exercise I get these days, a stroll down Memory Lane.:hihi:

Cheers, and thanks for the memories.

GG.

Harry Towle that's him; could he tell some whoppers, I remember one day I think we were in the Ship and an owd lad was showing off a pair of shoes he had bought for a fiver, and we customers agreeing with him he'd got a bargain, when in walked Harry resplendent in sheepskin coat, cravat, flat cap and goldmine on his fingers, he looked like Terry Thomas at his caddish best, the only thing missing was the cigarette holder. It appeared as if he'd just stepped out of a Morgan or other classic English sports car, when in reality he'd just stepped of the 82 bus. The owd lad pointed down to his new shoes and said "what abaht these Harry? Only a fiver." Harry peered down at the owd lads new shoes and said contemptuously "yes it looks like it"........."you know all my shoes are hand made by specialists, the leather brought to an exquisite softness by being chewed by a third world peon." This brought the house down, but this didn't deter Harry, within five minutes he was telling us how he drove "the old Bristol 402 around Brands Hatch" we who knew Harry thought more likely driving a Bristol bus around Long Eaton.

anyone remember Bass Charringtons Brewery , Claywheels lane
I remember claywheels lane back to the days of hope and anchor . Both my mother and father worked there - she in the brewery and he as a driver .
They both met whilst working at the brewery on - Mowbry Street ?
Dad used to play cricket for the brewery , along with Jim and Fred Thorpe , Harry Barber and latterly with Derek Turner . I can only remember a few as it was so long ago now .
As kids we used to go with the team regularly , as did the wives , in this old
' sharra bang ' that was kept in the garage at the brewery . A christmas party

Any one old enough to remember the brewery between aprox. 1934/1951.
My auntie who is 100 on Monday 19th.December used to live in the house at the left hand side of the lorry entrance to the brewery. Her husband was called Arthur Pilkington who i think was the caretaker although some of our family say he was head brewer. I used to stay with them during the summer holidays around the late 1940's. My uncle past away whilst employed by the brewery around 1951. The brewery helped my autie to find alternative accomodation where she has lived for the past 60 years. I always remember that the brewery builings and gardens at the front were kept in tip top condition

[QUOTE=mikebatty;8095111]Dad used to play cricket for the brewery , along with Jim and Fred Thorpe , Harry Barber and latterly with Derek Turner . I can only remember a few as it was so long ago now .

Brian Turner and Derek Turner both played for the cricket team, and also worked together on no 1 palletiser in the cellar, they weren't related.

I don't remember them as it was only just before my time . I am sure that my father would have known them and so , can I wish your aunt a somewhat belated " Happy Birthday". On behalf of my late father , Ted Batty and , God bless .

Yesterday was Mick (Henry ) Wigfull's funeral very poignant but then going out to" Hi ho silver lightning" was brilliant and put a smile on everybody's face.
Great to meet up with old faces and reminesce about characters and events,if only somebody could write a book.
Lovely to see Nicco,Lawman,Dorboy,Pete Davies,John Hewitt,Trevor Dixon ,Perksy and Reilly .A lot of beer went under the bridge yesterday and it looks like a reunion will have to be organised!!
