View Full Version : Sheffield Steelers, would you consider going???
Sara1312 22-02-2008, 08:31 I am a Sheffield Steelers fan and over the years I have seen less and less people coming to the arena to support them. I don't know why this is because they have always been a good team. Maybe it's because the most common sports are football and rugby?
I would just like to invite people to come and watch one game, it is worth the £13.50 for an adult and £8 for a child.

You've got it in one. Gimmicky American sports may be briefly fashionable but will never catch on over here simply because they don't really matter.
fox20thc 22-02-2008, 10:15 I'll tell you why I wouldn't consider going.
£43 entrance charge for a family of four and that's before the refreshments etc are bought.
barnie41 22-02-2008, 12:36 I'm a blade, but have been to the steelers on a couple of occasions. To be honest it bored me to the point of wanting to walk out - its not a sport that the average family will take to, thats why it will stay as a minority sport in this country.
I'll not be botehring ever again, sorry.

How much would it cost for that same family of 4 to go to football?
You could watch the Steelers in the warm and dry in a nice family atmosphere, where your kids would feel safe. You can even have a pint while you are watching the game (you can't do that at football)
We have been going since the very first season and we now take our grand-children.
elethiomel 24-02-2008, 22:06 Do they still do that ridiculous standing up for the National Anthem nonsense?
Old_Bloke 24-02-2008, 22:12 How much would it cost for that same family of 4 to go to football?
Sure, football would cost even more, but it doesn't make the ice hockey good value just because it's cheaper. All spectator sports seem to be overpriced these days...
(I've been to see the Steelers a couple of times and quite enjoyed it, but there's other things I'd rather spend my money on)
How can anyone consider football value, you pay for a 90 minute game and are lucky to see 75 minutes. At ice hockey you get what you pay for 60 mins of action. With all the cheating, time wasting and play acting football fans have been ripped of for years.

You're missing the point, dear. Football is a passionate game of skill which awakens the primeval tribal emotions of those who follow it and gives us a sense of belonging that's missing from our fragmented society. Furthermore it provides an outlet for all the anger, joy and frustration that we repress in our everyday lives; where else in life can you scream, shout and sing at the top of your voice in public without being thought of as a nutter?
Whereas ice hockey doesn;t really matter. A few men skate about for a bit and poke each other with sticks. The game ends; one team wins, the other loses, no-one really goves a monkey's either way.
Growler, have you ever investigated the fascinating sport of "Paint Drying"; it sounds right up your street? :P
You can't beat a bit of paint drying, but as an expert you sound like you would know that.
Sara1312 26-02-2008, 10:24 Oh dear??? Things seem to be getting out of hand. I only posted this for people who were interested in the sport or considering it, not for people to argue about which sport is best.

Don't worry about it Sara, football fans in this city are programed at birth to follow football, they are even programed as to which team to support. I've taken people to Steeler games when I've got a spare season ticket and the ones who like it and return are the ones whos family don't follow football.
I would certainly go if I got free tickets for example. Used to go to see the Belfast Giants occasionally when I lived there. But it is a matter of the time and money and having other priorities.
Bladesman 27-02-2008, 09:17 I wouldnt go back again even if I got free tickets.
It was very dull and boring.

But at least you went to a game and made your decision based on what you saw, can't ask anymore than that
If you get a freeby to the lane I'll be more than happy to come down and let you know what I think of utd ;)
Camrat78 28-02-2008, 07:21 I've been to see a game a few years ago. To be honest thought it was all to quick to actually see what was going on. Found it nearly impossible to follow the puck around the ice. Never botherd since.
Have tried it 3 times now, and managed to get free tickets every time. Each time thinking it must get better than this, sorry it doesnt, there is no atmosphere, amd i dont know if thats because you are indoors or because you cant go out on back garden and recreate it, likewise basketball, stock car racing, speedway (all sports that sheffield got a reasonable side in)
it may well be genetic programming, nothin beats football no matter whether it Weds / Utd / sheffield Fc or Stocksbridge, will happily ooooh and ahhhh at all of them
bladesman123 29-02-2008, 17:34 ALL american sports are rubbish ,just games they made up because they are rubbish at football
hockeybear 29-02-2008, 22:20 ALL american sports are rubbish ,just games they made up because they are rubbish at football
British soldiers stationed in Canada invented ice hockey, the original rules were based on rugby, of course the game has evolved somewhat since then. :D
Isn't baseball the game English girls play in school?
Dave..

Could that be the reason the USA beat England several times in the past at football?
(just a bit of info I have just been told)

MLS or Premier League?,,,, nuff sed
beddoe79 01-03-2008, 18:39 We're going to the double header weekend. the offer on tickets is good value so can't wait. haven't been since boxing day so should be a good weekend.
We re really on form at the moment , hope we can carry it through to the play offs . Good result tonight , not the most exciting of games but another 4 point week of hockey.:hihi:
Sara1312 02-03-2008, 10:34 I am starting to worry slightly about the atmosphere. Where are all the chants??? Last night was a really great game and the people around me weren't even standing up when we scored? Something needs to be done about this, we need to let the lads know were there at least!
I think a lot depends on where you sit I have sat in the same seat for years and last night was surrounded by strangers. It seemed like a long night, between explaining the rules and what was going on in the game and looking after a little boy. But they all went home happy, they had had a good time and are coming again.
I didn't think the atmosphere was too bad last night, the trouble is when the team are on a good run of results fans get a little complacent and expect to win every game. It wasn't exactly a close game the Steelers always seemed to be playing within themselves.
Always a better atmosphere at away games Sara , and better chanting , although not many of those left this season :( . I do think you re right , we need to make more noise to show our support to the lads. STEEEEEVE
ReginaldD 02-03-2008, 20:02 I went once and didn't really enjoy then again I didn't really dislike it. May have been as I didn't have a clue what was going on. Maybe if there were free tickets, my girlfriend was on holiday, my mates didn't want to go out, no good films at the cinema, no football or rugby on I may give it another go:hihi::hihi:

We need everybody to get behind the lads on wednesday, can't be many Blaze fans coming up midweek and they only have one chant so lets all sing our hearts out. I don't like it when I can hear the players calling to each other. Noise for the boys!!!

Can't wait!!! I'm soooo ridiculously excited!!!
 and for any ladies considering going, DO!!! Dave Matsos... Ryan Finnerty... Joey Talbot...:love::love:
S T E V E steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevvvvvvveeeeeeeeee
beddoe79 05-03-2008, 09:20 Wish I was going tonight - I was due to work until 10pm but that has changed now. However, I have to get up at 4.00am to go on holiday tomorrow so can't go. Oh well just over a week till the double header that should be good.
Sara1312 05-03-2008, 09:56 Can't go either tonight, I find it hard to get to mid-week games. But wishing them all luck to make it 15 out of 16 games!!!
Just to remind everyone , the early bird offer for Season Tickets for 08/09 expires June 1st. Our forms already in , many more joining us?
I've been a couple times because one of my friends is a huge steelers fan, so she's invited me along on a few occasions.
It wasn't really my thing to be honest, and I can't see myself going again.
bladesman123 12-05-2008, 15:20 I would rather watch paint dry
beddoe79 12-05-2008, 16:00 I would love to go but can't afford a season ticket at the minute - hopefully next year though. Glad we've got Steveeee back - just need Joey back and I'll be happy.
Bayern Blade 12-05-2008, 18:32 Ice hockey is simply not a sport that gets people going back home,I have watched EV Landshut for years in Germany and here it is a deep rooted sport.
In the UK despite Dave Simms laughable attempts to build a ridiculous fake manufactured rivalry with Nottingham there is no history,no basis and quality wise no point.
we love the steelers but no matter what u say it is still expensive especially when there are midweek matches too, maybe they will bring bk the old atmosphere when the move to the new arena
everyone should go it is great family entertainment on weekends.!!
GordonBennet 23-12-2008, 11:32 I still think watching paint dry would be more entertaining. Basketball's an American sport anyway, with no tradition over here.
Don't worry about it Sara, football fans in this city are programed at birth to follow football
Same as canada but reversed ...no doubt someone over there is asking same thing about why there local 'soccer' team has no support.
I used to like watching Ice Hockey on TV a bit, then I went to a live game and it didn't really do much for me, I struggled to keep track of where the puck was, didn't like the OTT music being played and the atmosphere at Sheffield Arena was pretty rubbish (as it is for gigs also)

Why do people with no knowledge of a subject, and who evidently haven't read any of the thread, feel the need to add their comments?
By the way I do watch the Steelers play ice hockey. As the fastest team team game in the world, ICE HOCKEY is quite entertaining.
steelers are fantastic and a brilliant entertainment for all the family
bladesman123 23-12-2008, 16:31 Basketball ????????????????????
i used to go because my mate played for em but i haven't been in a while, they should put more games on tv, NHL etc.

Oh, is it ice hockey? Shows how unimportant it is if few people can remember what sport the Sheffield Steelers play?
I think you have to question the masculinity of men who have to wear crash helmets and get all padded up to play sport because they're terrified they might hurt themselves, especially as hockey is a sport played mainly by schoolgirls.
You also have to question the sanity of the couple of dozen people in Sheffield who pay to watch this American rubbish.

Would you mind awfully popping down to Ice Sheffield so we could all smash pucks at you whilst you're not wearing any padding or a helmet? Honest, it won't hurt much.
Did you decorate your bridge with tinsel out of interest? :D

Why dont you pop down to a training session at Ice Sheff and question their masculinity face to face , I m sure they d be happy to answer your question.
The game on Boxing Day has now sold over 6000 tickets , so, couple of dozen ?????? Think you need to brush up on your facts before you judge the levels of other peoples sanity my friend.
If you dont like the sport ,fair do's dont come . I agree its not everyones cup of tea , but obviously 6000 folk obviously enjoy the sport (including 4 from our house)
i used to go a lot, my grandad would get us free tickets, think my brother still goes actually, its a good fun night out
I have not personally been in a few years time but it is something I want to do this coming year :)
