I remember the Irwins and Fletchers who lived there in 1965.

Tommy Irwin and Alan Fletcher attended the nearby Army Cadet hut
that helped to take the kids off the street in those days.

There was this woman called Dorothy Brown who lived in the steel houses, she used to visit my in-laws on Colley ave. She had quite a few kids and she was as thin as a rail, she had a son a few months before me, so he would be about 45 now. This was back in the 60s I'm talking about, I wonder what she's doing today if she's still with us.

I can remember them being built.
I knew some people named:- Sylvia Edwards. she married a Coleman.
and some called Savage. My father knock about with the mother!!

Three quarters along Holgate Road from its junction with Holgate Crescent a eight foot ran or runs across to Deerlands Avenue, coming out at the bottom of Lindsay Road.

In 1947 or 1948. after a great storm with torrential rain, the water flowing down the Hartley Brook, which is piped under the eight foot. Built up and eventually washed the entire path away. I actually saw that happen.

Immediately to the Jewish Cemetery side of the eight foot, where the Hartley Brook runs. a pond existed. The soil that was washed away from the eight foots enbankment partly filled this pond and we had to find elsewhere to go swimming.

As a matter of interest. If you follow Holgate Road across its junction with Holgate Crescent going toward Holgate Avenue.

On the left side after this junction, is a block of four two bedroomed houses.

At the second house, on the outside wall facing Deerlands Avenue. close to the upstairs bathroom window. In 1946 or 47 whilst the house was being built. I stuck a piece of concrete on to the wall and wrote my initials in, the then, wet cement

Is it still there?

( If it is Please don't knock it off until I've ask permmission to take a photograph ).

Cheers for the comments okismoki - glad you found my presence so amusing (Barry Calton) - yes, still ugly & yes - the jokes have got no better  Remember all too well the good old days on Holgate - lived there from '63 until they came down - I had a paper-round which included our road and can post you names a plenty. Our neighbours were Goldthorpes and Howitt, moving towards the jennel were Brodericks, Beevers, Bartons, Fletchers(then Wrights and later Pointers at 97) Irwins, Davis's, Pashleys, Kents, Collins, Watsons, Coopers as I remember. Opposite us and going same way down road was Addingtons, Allendars, Godfreys, Coggins, Wrights, Pinders, Oakleys, Peach, Cunningham, Towel, Browns, Harrisons, Hopkins, Brooks. To anyone I've missed, apologies, can see most of you in my minds eye but can't put a name to you. Perhaps other readers could enlighten further?

Remember when Minnie & Bernard owned the chippy? They had a woman named Brenda who used to help 'em out and owned it I believe from being first built. My sister Anita helped 'em out as a young lass and Dot Biggin (Chris, Steve & Julies Mam) worked there for a period too if I remember right. Bernard was a cigar smoking ex coach driver & Minnie was a slightly built small woman with peroxide blonde hair. Brenda was the dark haired lady with black rimmed glasses perched on the end of her nose. God - they were the good old days!

Hi okismoki - you obviously have issues and knew quite a few "wierd looking people" as you were growing up - or is it just that you were soooooooooo good looking and on a higher plane than the rest of us I fear?? Who are you - whats your name?? Re. the people you mentioned, I know them all. Chris Biggin -dont know if he had other aquaintances before her but married Viv and been with her since school days. Len was an ex bus driver and yes had a son Alistair who was a good lad & done well for himself. Allendars lived opposite me & had 4 children I think, an older girl, Paul, Carol & a quite a bit younger girl. Scholeys you mention, good family, older girl, Martin, Mick and Paula. Spoke to a relation of their a number of years ago & believe Martins a high flyer in business & Micks a scuba instructor on some far off paradise island. What a life eh?
