I thought the thread was about peoples' opinions to people who fancied rats!

Personally I think they're lovely! :D

I love rats.

They are both lovely and extremely fascinating, but in what way I'm not sure.

It all depends. Looking at the pictures you submitted, the first couldn't have looked any cuter, but the other two didn't portray them in a nice light at all!

My sister used to have a fancy rat and he was the loveliest creature ever, so much nicer and more intelligent than mice.

We have a fancy rat. My boy got it from a friend of his who was unable to care for the critter. I wasn't very happy about it at first, but the little guy has really grown on me.

Our rat is very gentle, intelligent (he pokes his head out of his house when he hears someone's voice) and loves to be held, petted, and fussed over. He will sit contentedly on my son's shoulder as he does his homework, or walks around the house.

He eats just about anything, although we don't feed him oranges, (something to do with the rind?) nuts, candy/chocolate, or popcorn.

He's unbelievably cute and will lick someone's fingers or cheek like a dog. They do make sweet pets. IMO, much better than a hamster or guinea pig.

I nearly got a couple of pet rats a couple of years back, but was put off by a friend who told me about his friend who had some and they made the house reek.

Does their pee smell?

I had rats as pets when I was younger, they make great pets loving and very intelligent only problem is they have such a short life span.:(

We've had several pet rats over the years and they make excellent pets. They are clean, intelligent and very social animals. Our last one, Devo, had a stroke. He lived for another year afterwards but was rather lop-sided! Didn't bother him too much though and he soon regained his balance etc. I'd reccomened them over mice and hamsters a sthey are easier to handle and not as nasty tempered!

Rats as pets are fine, I have known a few people over the years who have kept them. They are clever and one friend had a couple that would sit eyeing you up from beneath a chair until they decided you were safe. They actually recognised some people and weren't in the least shy with them. One guy used to bring his rat into a pub in town and it would sit under his denim jacket poking it's head out to accept crisps however if the bar staff came round collecting glasses it kept out of sight and it seemed to do this of it's own volition.

I used to have pet rats, they were realy good fun, and very smart.

The only problem is that they don't live long, once you get to know them and get used to having tham around they get old and die.

My mums back garden is full of little shoe-box coffins.

It's very sad.

Ahhh,

I knew male rats shouldn't have oranges, but couldn't remember why.

Thanks ritzy.

Rats are fab pets - they are clean(ish), and friendly. Mice and hamsters will almost always give you a nip or two but rats never seem to :o
