Happy march everyone!

I've only been in sheffield for about 2 or 3 years, does it normally snow in march? Can any old timers remember the most snow they've seen in shef?

Also any tips for driving in the snow (or should I just not bother) I am a relatively new driver.

I remember moving house about 12 years ago on April 20th and it was deep in snow. I made the removal men put sheets down so they didn't muddy my new carpets!!

Slow and carefully. Use as high a gear as possible and don't accelerate or brake at anything more than a snails pace. Of course, most roads will be fine as the snow isn't settling, so just knocking it down to 20 - 25 mph on 30 roads if you feel really uncomfortable.

Keep in as high a gear as possible to reduce the likelihood of wheel spin, be especially aware of all the eejits who didn't get up early enough to clear the car and are now speeding coz they're late, keep a warm coat in the car incase you need to get out (breakdowns, snow-ins etc), drive with your lights on (so other's can see you and don't pull out infront of you)

Saxon can probably add to this far better than I can...

Edit: Braking - change down gears and let the engine slow the car whilst gently applying brake. You're less likely to skid then.

I think Sheffield's heaviest March snowfall was in 1947 but I was just a lad of 7 at the time. I can remember seeing one of the old single-decker 'rescue' trams with a snow plough fixed on the front.

As for driving in it....just take everything slow, - no sudden changes of direction, leave plenty of room for braking and brake slowly and gently. and use the gearbox to slow the car. When moving off try and get into as high a gear as possible as soon as you can, - on the flat you can usually get away in 2nd gear, then into 3rd at 10-15 mph....doesn't matter if the engine pinks a bit.

Perhaps this (http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=1570) was 1947?

Yes but only your tyres :hihi: I for one don't even risk snow for fear of sliding into someone :gag:

In last weeks snow 4 or 5 cars were hit at the bottom of the road when trying to drive in this (http://photobucket.com/albums/v613/Deej49/Crookes%20-%20Snow/?action=view&current=Pic1.jpg) , this (http://photobucket.com/albums/v613/Deej49/Crookes%20-%20Snow/?action=view&current=Pic2.jpg) and this (http://photobucket.com/albums/v613/Deej49/Crookes%20-%20Snow/?action=view&current=Pic3.jpg)

Just like to report that it isn't snowing in Gran Canaria, although it was a little cloudy today.
All these miles away and still logging in to the forum, how sad is that? Got to go, cocktails await........

It was 1947 and we had to get back from Sheffield to the other side of Mansfield, the bus managed to get within 2 miles of home.
I can remember walking down the road, a string bag in hand with a pound of sausages in, the bag was above my head on top of the snow, mind I was only 9 yrs old.

I have known it snow on my birthday in JUNE.

Hazel, please let us know when anything significant happens in your life (no matter what time of year), I'm going to call the council gritters and warn them snows on its way when you do. ;)

My life is so quiet at the moment, you will be safe from avalanches Foo but I'll certainly post any big event so you have plenty of warning.

My god.... I used to live on that road, and the photos are NOT exaggerating the slope one little bit - I can't believe anyone would be so stupid as to try and drive down it in the snow.

I remember 1995 after moving from Kelvin to stocksbridge the previous year, I signed up to play snooker for my local pub in the summer league and our first match was in may and we were away and it snowed on that day, but it does snow a lot in stocksbridge.
