This is very serious so please read!!

I've recently been contacted by someone who saw my advert for an available room claiming to be a 'west african model' visiting sheffield to do a 'concert'.They asked to take it for two months saying they would pay up front even though they would not be there the entire two months. They also said they would include money for their flight fee and feeding allowance with the cheque they were sending. i soon realised this sounded rather dodgy so i sent an email saying the room was no longer available however i still received a cheque for a whopping £3500 and was flooded with emails telling me their mother had been in a crash, had diarrhea and needed a life saving operation. These were basically ways to get me to transfer money to them immediately!

This is called the nigerian cheque scam apparently. The cheque they send is fake.It appears to clear in your bank, the money can be withdrawn, you send them the money they ask for and then it bounces. Not only will you be down a lot of money but you will also get the police round and be investigated for fraud.

i think some people might and i also think some people might be tempted to pay a cheque of that amount into their banks out of greed or curiosity and this alone lands them in trouble

Yes 90% of people would see straight through it, but its the 10% naive and stupid that are preyed upon.

Naive, stupid and greedy!

Lots of this type of scam going on - a similar version involves ebay. Basically, if Nigeria's involved, it's probably going to end in tears.

Don't do it!

The Nigerian scam has now extended to Ivory Coast and other West African countires. The only reason it keeps doing the rounds is because it only takes one person daft (or greedy) enough to fall for the scam to make it profitable for the scammers (have I just invented a new word there?).

My e-mail box regularly gets news of the death of someone in a plane crash in West Africa, and this humble bank clerk just needs you to open an account for a share of the money to be transferred over to me. The latest variation came from Serbia. The sender claimed that someone wanted for war crimes can't touch his frozen bank account, but if I send, etc., etc.

Just hit the DELETE button.
