Hello
Can anyone fill me in on any recent history about the Flower Estate? I have heard that there were a couple of famillies that used to 'own' the estate, I'm trying to find out more about the last ten years or so. Does anyone know what happened to them, and what happened to all the people who lived in the houses that were demolished?
Thanks

there have been many families, most large, on the flower estate over the years, wakes, woodwards, robinsons, smiths, and many more.

I'm an artist interested in the proposal to produce work for the hoardings that are going to surround the building site for the next 18 months. The funders want to work with local communities to produce stuff, so I'm just trying to find out a bit more.

Have you tried going to the local schools or finding out if there are any local groups. I'm sure they still use one of the houses as a drop in centre.

I grew up on the flower estate and it did get really rough and tough in the late 70's and 80's. According to my parents (my mom lived on there from being a child) the estate was a nice place to live with a good community spirit until the slum clearances of the late 60's and 70's came along. This brought in a lot of problem families which were normally large in numbers. In my time there, I saw the place really deteriorate with certain families interbreeding and causing grief for the others. There were, however, quite a number of decent folk living on the 'flower' and people do tend to overlook this when scrutinising similar estates. Having said that, it was a joyous occasion when I eventually uprooted and left the decay.
If you want to pm me I can let you know a bit more, I think it's a little insensitive to bandy names around on a forum.

I used to Live on the flower estate from being born to leaving when I got married in 1973,I used to live opposite the junior school on the corner bracken rd, I agree it was a good estate back then everyone looked out for each other, you could leave your doors unlocked, & no one bothered not like these days, I remember Wakes, ernie wake knocked around with one of my brothers also I think it was Steve woodward as well (he had a glass eye) Smiths, longfords (next door neighbours), on bon fire night our end of the green used to have a competition with the other end to see who could build the biggest bonfire, we always lost as one of the family's dad brought home loads of wood on the lorry he drove, some other names that come to mind are: bruins, dixon's, shipam's, turton's, mr brooke's, exton's, mitcham's, naylor's, one's I went to school with are: longford, Smith, myers, walker, scott. varley, allan, willis, to name but a few anyone else remember me (haddon) let us know.

I grew up in woodseats but was born in Wincobank (Barrow Road), my Grandad Eric and Nanan Gladys and most of family lived on daffodil (Myers) and i remember it all like yesterday. The stories are all true about neighbours lookin out for each other. To Carol Green i know your Bob, he's a good friend of my dad and my aunts and uncles. i fondly remember going out on the back fields walking the dog with my uncle. I was only a young lad of about 8 or 9 but i have great memories of the Flower estate. Its sad to see the road as it is now and thinking back to how it used to be. My dad wants wants to Know if anyone remembers the brickyard that used to be on the field at the back of what used to be the Roman Ridge????
Thanks to all for making me think back to happy times.

I lived on the Flower Estate from birth 1950 and even though most people didn't have a great deal of money there was a great community spirit. We didn't have all the little toe rags who thought they should rob and annoy their neighbors all the time or make the place a massive slum. Most of us went to Shiregreen School and were subject to fairly high standards there and if we got into trouble out of school we would get punished by the school and our parents. Things changed eventually and the estate seemed to have a lot of people move in who thought that the world owed them a living and that they were above the law and that they could run the area down to their level. Next thing demolition, some rebuilding now a big building site and a bloody good community scattered and some of it lost.

Hello
Can anyone fill me in on any recent history about the Flower Estate? I have heard that there were a couple of famillies that used to 'own' the estate, I'm trying to find out more about the last ten years or so. Does anyone know what happened to them, and what happened to all the people who lived in the houses that were demolished?
Thanks

I've heard there were a few families living up there that were responsible for most of the crime within a few miles radius of the Flower Estate.

Police drivers didn't bother chasing joyriders round the streets of North Sheffield; they'd just lie on wait on the Flower Estate for them to turn up later!

Those houses have now been flattened, as part of the recent encroachment of housing developments onto Wincobank Hill.

Did you actually live there , we did and it was no different than any where else, There were big families and every one knew who they were and knew not to tangle with them as they stook together what ever, It got rougher before the houses got knocked down, yes the joy riders always ended up on wincobank hill but better there than on the street , (not that im agreeing with joy riding ) and then the burnt out cars were left for the police to find, when they eventually turned up, just like now really.

Hi Carol, I was just reading your post and noticed your brother knew Kenneth Stanley. I'm doing my family tree and found that Kenneth signed Fanny Stanleys death certificate - she was my great grandmother. I didn't know that my grandmother had a younger brother until my certificate arrived today. Would you please pass my email address (andrew191swift@btinternet.com) on to Kenneth or his family as I would dearly love to find more about our family history. Thank you soooo much. Kirsten x

Hi Little Alex/We lived on Daffodil road for years.as you say when we were kids it was great. We all had big families but we all no matter how big the family had respect for each others parents. We would be friends one day then fighting the next thats how it was.still see some of the lads and still there's that respect for each otherWe lived at no 35 in late 60s well into the 70s thats when i moved off only to move to Honeysuckle road then moved out of the area but still have family around there.if you want to get in touch with email let me know cheers

No one owned the estate. we were off Daffodil road but were quiet happy playing on Honeysuckle road with the Woodwards & Robbo's.On Hyacinth with the myers.Lets start another Debate Which was the Best road on the flower estate Obviously Daffodil road but whay does everyone else think

Hi all I'm carols bother Barry I'm seconded eldest I was at shiregreen middle school From 1965 to 1972 I remember Mr Priestley he was nasty he kicked a kid out of his class with his Dr martins shoes kid was taken to hospital with a gashed head as he hit the cupboards outside the class room.
Our Dave went to school same time a peter Lawton our cousin and his brother Gordan there was also john to.
we move into number 38 daffodil rd in 1964 after the bad winter of 63 because our old house caught fire in the chimney and we moved next door to my mum's brother Jeff Lawton.
We had a great childhood with as our carol has said we played in the woods of wincobank hill a old roman fort a hall was built on there later on but had go into ruin in the 60's.
Our life was fun lots of kids to play with and at times fight with to the fovringills was one such family the wake's and stanley's where our friends we always had a house full as carol said we lost our mum to pneumonia so as dad was working we had a house keeper payed by the council to get us ready for school.
we had good time around wit-son tide were we got dress in our best clothes them go around the house showing the off and getting money.
it was a great time i left in 1981 or 82 my sister's stay there when my dad remarried it wasn't a good time for them our Dave still live on primrose ave and if the person doing research on the estate wants to send contact details I will forward the to him he is on the tenants association.

I lived on Clematis Road in the 50's but can't remember the number.

I haven't lived in Sheffield for over 30 years.
As we went back there last year for a wedding, I decided I'd like to have a look at Clematis Road, not having been back there since the 50's.
How sad - couldn't get near it. It looked like all the houses and been demolished and all I could see was piles of earth.

One Daffodil Road resident I went to school with was Elaine Hunt, who was a right rum lass! She was little and blonde and as brave as a lion. I remember her at primary school; she knew all the swear words and how to use them.

I think she knew all about sex too, and I remember being dragged up onto Wincobank Hill by three girl friends, and reluctantly finding myself in a snogging activity. The other girls paired off gradually with other boys, and each pair were sent under a jacket to snog. To my horror I was paired off with Howard. I did not 'fancy' Howard, and he probably felt the same about me and I didn't want to do the snogging. I recall the activity as a slobbery, slimy experience. It put me off boys for a while, so maybe they did me a favour, because the other girls seemed to become 'unmarried mothers' not many years after, and I lasted until 31 to have my children! We were all about 11 at snogging time.

Elaine used to give us hours of entertainment. I reckon the Hunt family lived at number 76. Those houses were decent enough, but Elaine's family were probably less fussy than mine, and I used to be surprised at how different her home was. Our beds were made properly with sheets, blankets and eiderdown on top, and my mother made the beds every morning. Elaine's bed was a mish-mass of blankets, bless her, and not very clean. My father always refused to let me sleep at her house, to my relief, I must admit. I always knew that when I asked my dad, I was safe, because his answer would always be 'No'.

She was the youngest of four in the family; she had a brother Mick who 'had to get married', and had his own home. She had a sister Dot who 'had to get married' and also had her own home. She had another brother Graham who was the same age as my older sister and was known to be rather too fond of 'wheels', especially other people's wheels. The Police found young Graham in possession of the remnants of a scooter which belonged to Yat, a friend of my brother. Yat was upset at the theft, he really couldn't understand it at all, especially since the scooter had been taken apart and was unusable.

I still think her family was so much more interesting than mine, but I preferred my upbringing to hers. I do hope she's okay. Last time I saw her, she was sitting on the number 4 bus from Shiregreen into Sheffield. We must have been 18 years old - I was on my way to catch a bus or train back to teaching college in Nottingham, and Elaine was laughing her head off as usual, saying 'I'm f***ing pregnant, aren't I!" I suppose I'm surprised that she had lasted that long!

I do hope their family don't mind me writing their story on here; I'd love to know what happened to them. I don't think her mother was ever very healthy, she was small and quite chubby, and I think had breathing problems. On one occasion when I went to Elaine's house, she said they had left a can of hairspray on the mantlepiece over a roaring fire, and the can had exploded and set fire to every item in reach! I thought this was truly exciting!

Does anyone remember a lovely teenage lad called David Whiteside who died at home suddenly, whilst asleep in a chair? He was friends with Andrew Gartside(?) I'm doubting my memory now, since both these names end with 'side'.

David must have been about 17 when he died, and we were all completely shocked, since he wasn't ill. He would be have been born in about 1952.

I still have a photo of the boys walking alongside me and Hilary Webster when we were taking the Upper Wincobank Undenominational Chapel banner on the Whitsuntide march through the streets to the park at Firth Park. It doesn't seem fair that he never had much life. It's very sad.

recently found this thread so apologies if names are repeated but, Fothergills, Stones, Robinsons, Walch's and not forgetting the two families that bought their houses on Daffodil Road, the Robinsons and Hollingworths? There was also the Rennie family that lived there a short time at 56 Daffodil Road. There was also the Rowdin(g) family and many other families whose names I cannot recall. Carol, I remember your family very well, all of them. I remember the Warehams. There was the Bollingtons, Favels and Greens on Bluebell Road.
So many memories of living on the estate.
Remember the family that had the embarassment of being sent to bed very early every night, lived at 54 Daffodil Road, thats me!! or one of them.
Not much left of this side of the estate but still memorable families over near what was Shiregreen School.

Back in the early 60's, I went out with a boy called Alan Day.
He lived on Daffodil Road, as I recall, it was a house near the end.

Can anyone remember the Huxtable family from Daffodil Rd? my mum is Denise Huxtable.

I remember your Mum. I lived next door but one on Beck Road before your family moved to the Flower Estate. I recall your grandad taking us out blackberry picking in his motor bike and side car. I think I have only seen your Mum once in the last 40 odd years. Is your gran , Millie still alive. She was a lovely lady.

the estate was ok until a couple of problem familys came to live there then they would invite friends who eventually moved on to the flower along with lots of other family's it was easy to get a house on there cause no one else wanted to live there be for long it was full of undesirable tenants and family's were break ins were daily, assaults and muggings regular, plus the drug dealing thatt went on you could drive round it any time of day or night and you could gett any thing dealers were on every corner , the council said then that the houses needed to much money spending on them so decided to raze it to the ground thus dispersing all the familys
