I am a student who goes to the odd game and have heard the song
"Can you hear United sing,
the Wednesday ran away,
and we will fight for ever more,
because of boxing day."

Can anyone explain the story behind this song to me? Thanks.

Can't quite remember United having a 25th Anniversary dinner last December to celebrate one of - to quote them - "Wendy's greatest ever victories".

Typical attitude from the city's Third Division team. Can only talk about attendances. Start to talk about the quality football you are playing at moment, if your necks not hurting too much.

You see we are not very good at football, we are not very well supported and nobody else likes us. For this reason, we particularly do not like our bigger and better neighbours Sheffield Wednesday. Quite simply, we are jealous!

Although we all wish our parents had bought us a blue and white scarf for christmas all those years ago, and saved us from a lifetime of misery.

Nice false quote! You are suffering from a severe case of sour grapes just because you got absolutely thrashed in the first round against the mighty Swindon, while we drew (or as most people say... won) at Highbury and took Arsenal to penalties at Bramall Lane. What do you think the score would have been if Arsenal had been playing the Owls tonight at Hillsborough? 10-0 to the Owls?? Or 0-10 to Arsenal? Roflmao

They're doing ok in the 3rd division with (I think) their 8th manager in 10 seasons!

I hope the Blades fans don't decide to go that way ... calling for Warnock's head while the Blades are still in the top half of the table... and end up with a "sack the manager every few months" mentality which that would lead to. The reason we are still doing well and near the top of the Championship is that we have a good manager who is a Blades fan and is good at managing the very limited money the Board throw his way.

I think if he takes the risk of playing Beckett from the start at Cardiff on Saturday then we should be well on our way to the play offs!

Well spotted! So even you can summise from the information given, that Sheffield United are in The Championship (or to use your numbering system, OLD DIVISION TWO) and it is they who are quaintly known by the footballing world as "The Pigs".

Anymore for anymore?

Has anyone else noticed how the wednesday fans pop up when united have lost, and then harp on about their bigger fanbase, bigger stadium, and go on about how "we were great 20 years ago".

Please stop. By all means be proud of your clubs achievements, but it's an embarrassing reflection of the state your club is in now if all you can go on about is "the good old days".

As a Blade, it really doesn't matter that to me that wednesday have more fans or have won more. If I wanted to be a fan of a big club that's won loads of trophies, I'd support Man Utd or Liverpool.

I'm proud of United, and don't give a toss if everyone hates us or our manager.

Yes, well done Arsenal.

Your premiership winning team was held to not one but two draws by a lower division side, and only just manged to overcome them at the second time of asking by the lottery of a penalty shootout.

But yes, well done, and good luck for the rest of the tournament. You're really going to need it.

Does being immature come naturally with being a wednesday fan or something??

Why do they call us the pigs when the HISTORICAL data shows that there ground is built on a pig sty??

Remember 2 years ago when we stuffed you 3-1 at our place- bet u guys have forgetten that havn't you? or when we came to your place and beat you 3-1 and then 2-0 at home?? hhhmmm- you seem to have short term memory loss!!

Now go back to hillsborough and prepare for your next match against some low league opposition like doncaster or gravesend- god knows- i never bother looking at the minnows in the the lower leagues!!

living in the past id say, just cant handle that its uniteds turn to be the better team in quality. what does size of crowd size matter, its not going to get you promoted is it?

and back to arsenal, again wendys are just jelous, of the fact that united get knocked out of the 5th round by arsenal and they have to suffer a rather disappointing loss to swindon town in the 1st round.

Go to the Sheffield library and ask to look at very old maps of Owlerton/Hillsbough. Try and find any evidence of a pig farm. Then ask to see very old maps of the Bramall Lane area and see what you see.

Let’s kick this myth about the name “pigs” and pig farms into touch. Sure…..there was an old pig farm near Bramall Lane, but that was years and years before Bramall Lane was built and has nothing to do with united fans being called pigs.

The pig insult came about one derby match when Wednesday’s thug element had surrounded United fans on their kop. The police formed a barrier around the United fans..…..the Wednesday fans started chanting “pigs pigs pigs” …the united fans responded by chanting “we’ve got a gun - we’ve got a gun”.

Immature????

If you want to talk about immature lets talk about the “bbc”. Some of the older members have been involved in football violence since the mid 70’s and well before the “bbc” was formed. These thugs are now middle-aged. Yet they still get involved in football violence and football related violence. They should be old enough to know better. That’s immature!

A few seasons ago after returning from a match me and my then 14 year old daughter got off the tram at the Cathedral. As we made our way up Fargate a group of 15 to 20 thugs crossed over to our side of Fargate menacingly chanting bbc bbc and other obscenities …. Some of this group were in their mid 30’s or even older. We were both spat upon just as the police seemed to appear from nowhere and saved the day.

I supposed they thought they were very hard men terrifying me and my 14 year old daughter. I bet they couldn’t wait to brag about it to their mates.

That’s immature!

Haha good one!

Brooksy, stevie you're both right! They are a bunch of c***s that are already feeding their kids all the crap that they think is right, etc. It tars everyone with the same brush, many away games I have been pulled and some home games i'm sure I get watched because of my size, how I dress, etc. These are men who's ideal life is to grow up a 'man' get a job as a mechanic with weekends off. dress up in burberry and go smash someone or something up. They go home satisfied to their *cough* page 3 wife for some food then go out on the p*** later that night with the 'lads' of course there are 20 of these lads so there is no danger of anyone tackling them.

But stevie Scottf never brought that up and you have just put us all in the same boat as them really with that. we're not all immature, and although we take the p*** out of each other on here I know i'm jesting all the time. We don't all go around chanting BBC in a group of 50.

It happens everywhere and is just pathetic!

good post duffman, personally i think the burbbery wearing footie thug is so naff these days theyve become a joke. take your point on being pigeon holed by what clothes you wear but thats to be expected with the footie hooligan reputation. i went to villa park for a cup match a couple of seasons ago with my son and was body searched. when i explained i was 42 years old with a family the copper vitually told me to ---- off .

Quick reply to Duffman – I have to go out for a while.

Sorry if I appeared to tar you all with the same brush. I’ll read my original post again later. I was targeting the immature thug element in football and not the real fans.

No worries stevie, I do believe I have spoken to Town Blade a few times.

And Brooksy yeah, I think it's a joke too. Supreme manliness in beating up one or two people when you are in a group of 5 or more walking the streets all dressed up shouting at coppers like you own them. Ha! makes me laugh, but what doesn't is the fact they teach teir kids to aspire to be likt them, kids don't know any better do they? Sowe have a new contingent of them carrying the flag of humiliation above their heads. If most of them met a real hard man they would be on the floor in seconds.

There was a time they used to spoil it for the home fans aswell, what you trying to prove? How stupid you can be or something, we don't care and don't want to know.

Why is it that sheffield united fans seem to be proud of the 'BBC'. they are nothing but a bunch of thugs who out to be shot(sorry personal opinion). they constantly go on about that the bbc is one of the most feared groups around and they are always having battles and getting into trouble but i recently read in a magazine about the top 10 worst clubs for violent groups and the bbc were no-where to be seen! however the OCS (owls crime squad) was 5th on the list. i think this shows united fans they are not as feared and troublesome as they would like to think. then again im not saying the OCS is right in what they do as i am a dedicated fan.

Footballs about football why all the violence?

Because some fans will always take it that step further, football is about passion and pride and unfortunatly when you have got 2 sets of fans that feel extremely passionate about there team and reputation it will spill over into violence be it right or wrong, some of these people see themselves as an extension of the team- good side = nice set of boys that don't turn and they pride themselves of that fact.

Football violence shouldn't be tolerated in grounds but it is here to stay and its only going to get more organised.

by the way- whoever wrote that about the OCS needs his head looking at :D

I think this thread started with something about the chant:

"hark now hear the United sing,
the Wednesday ran away...
and we will fight forever more because of boxing day"

I find this kind of thing quite amusing, or sometimes, quite annoying.

Basically, EVERY club has a derby game of sorts. Even if it's not a club from the same city. Usually very close though.

And I guarnatee, every club will sing this chant as it's when derby matches traditionally are. Boxing day. I know as Geordie we sang it about Sunderalnd, and vice versa, and up and down the country...it aint special.

I find this with loads of footy chants and folklore...a lot of it is the same, just developed for your club. Which is fine, but it does get annoying when fans think it's special to them.

I remember having a chat with Man Utd fan who just wouldnt accept their chant "to see the Busby aces" was taken from Newcatsle's "The Bladen Races"...even though its a traditional North East song from years back sung at St Jame's forever.

I still get amused when people gleefully tell me of funny songs, and I think, yeah, I know that, but for my team, and probably about a couple of dozen others..

Ah...to not live in a 5 mile radius and be so niave as to think EVERY little song is exclusive to my club.

Discuss.....

The song may come from the good old days of league 3, but although the score is a good one for owls supporters, the win in the F.A. cup semi final 2-1 to the wednesday, is more important to me, as it was at the old wembley in front of over 70,000 sheffield football supporters...utter brill, in the days we were both on the up and had a team to be proud of.... how things have changed.....? we must all have our favorite match, its funny though as if we wednesday supporters go on about boxing day or wembley, the blades start on about history lessons...:suspect: its just a fact that we beat utd! as is the fact that you beat us at our place 3-1 not so long ago (Still smarts):gag:..... or is that not a history lesson? is it just a fact ?? and just a note to those who dont like the big fan base thing us wednesday supporters go on about..... to me it means nothing.. what the point of having over 25.000 at a match if you cant deliver the goods? so why do we still go?
Because im a wednesdayite till i die and a loyal supporter of sheffield wednesday football club. we might not be the best team in sheffield "at the moment" but its not all about being the best team its about being loyal and sticking with them through the good and the Bad times.
I say good luck to utd and wednesday and maybe one day sheffield will have two top teams with the best support.
:) And for those who do not go to matches to me you have no right to point out your views... you may call yourself a fan of your club, but its the supporters who still go to the games.

Excellent post! Sums it all up perfectly.

I've been a Wednesday fan for more than 35 years and a season ticket holder for most of them. I've always been proud of my team through thick and thin over those years and enjoy the rivalry banter within reason. What really gets me annoyed though is the posts on here and other message boards from the idiots who obviously don't ever go to games and just take pleasure purely from baiting the opposing fans. How many of them have reached puberty?

The current brand of football violence has nothing whatsover to do with football. As discussed previously in this thread, it's just a bunch of cowards with safety in numbers feeling good about themselves because thev've shouted obscenities towards away fans or beaten up some defenceless young lad (or lass, baby, or old lady, it doesn't matter to these single figure IQ neanderthals).

The idiots who sit at the Leppings Lane side in the North Stand at Hillsborough show themselves to be mindless morons week in, week out. There is always a strong police presence there and no matter what they say or do, no arrests seem to be made. I get the impression that the police are quite happy just to let them be, knowing that whilst they're sat (stood mostly) there in the stand, they have them under control. Try telling that to your six year old son or daughter whilst every swear word and obscene threat under the sun is being screamed constantly throughout the game.

Since I started watching football both Wednesday and United have had their peaks and troughs. Those of you who keep using previous results, situations etc to emphasise who is the best should just be thankful that we still have two relatively decent football teams in Sheffield and that what comes around, goes around. I know, I've seen it!

I've always found football violence to be incredibly organised, and not random and senseless. Though there will always be exceptions. For as long as there is football, there will be a bunch of blokes who want to kick each others heads in. Nobody will ever really stop them, so give them some deserted wasteland and let them get on with it.

Swearing at grounds is no more than what kids use every day in the playground.
