I'm a photojournalism student, new to sheffield, and am looking for recommendations on what to photograph. It could be anything, from a cool building, to a voluntary project which needs some promoting, a strange and wacky shop to an event specific to the city. It's a completely open call! Any suggestions much appreciated.

The things that interest me when I'm in the photography mood are the historical bits of Sheffield. All the old architecture and the old industrial structures. Have a walk around Kellham Island with your camera and you should find plenty of interesting relics.

try Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, a genuine historical site.
I loved going there on school trips when I was a kid, we even did a play there once dressed in all the authentic gear and I was so proud of the fact that i could play "gaudete" on my tenor recorder.

How about an article with pictures on any of the following historic buildings:-

Hillsborough Library
Burrowlee House
Page Hall
The Oakes, Norton
The Old Mill, Holme Lane.

I'm sure many people would like to know more about these places and I'm sure there must be many more neglected or unpublicised places in Sheffield.

How about the beggars on the streets?

But beware, blonde girl might ask you for some money...

I love wondering around Castle Market, it's a really interesting place (avoid thursdays and sundays!). It's a bit sort of dark and dingy, but I love the interesting world food place and the treasure trove of hardware and fabric and cosmetics and bags. There are some real characters there too. I know it's not the "prettiest" place, but I love the fact that it is real.

I know this is common sense and I don't want to sound patronising, but please just be careful about wandering around Sheffield with an expensive camera at any of the places we are suggesting! I don't want to put you off, because you say you are new to Sheffield, and it is one of the safest cities, but would hate to think of something bad happening!

Have fun though!

What about photos of all the sports facilities/venues in Sheffield - both football grounds, the ski village, Don Valley Stadium, Owlerton dog track, indoor climbing place, Ponds Forge, Ice Sheffield...?

How about "Underground Sheffield"? There are loads of caves, extended cellars and tunnels under the city.

It would be nice to get some last photos before they are lost forever.

Ok the thing that gets my vote is the World Snooker Championship.. thats in sheffield and it looks like its going to be its last year in this fine city. Its cool to see all the snooker players milling and walking around town signing autographs and stuff. I know they have a fab photo both type thing in the crucible for the sports photographers and such, i believe you can use flash and the players can't see you!! There are always sports photographers hanging around and obviously you can't miss them (carrying all their kit!). The fun starts sat 16th april at the Crucible Theatre!

some of the graffitti in & around the city can make for some very interesting stuff. I don't necessarily mean the "tags" you can't read. There has been some stunning urban art down the years and also one or two quirky slogans. My favourite was daubed on the Zion chapel at Woodhouse. It read "bel is a horse" ??!!??

Hey, everyone who has replied - just a post to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH - it is so nice to pick the brains of Sheffield and get such a variety of replies. Have in fact discovered Castle Market for myself and completely agree with the recommendation; such an interesting place. Also am working on the sports stuff and going to cover the World Table Tennis Championships tomorrow (random! yippee!).
Also wanted to say thank you to 'Zebra' for the PM - have followed up the lead and am meeting the manager next week.

Keep the recommendations flowing!

There are usually some kids on skateboards near where the tram line splits off to go to halfway or meadowhell near Fitzalan Square [outside Ponds Forge]. Could make for some good photos with them flying through air outside sports centre :P

Rother Valley Country Park should be good this time of year with the weather if u want country photos.
