I'm planning a visit to York soon, and looking on the Internet I found the Jorvik centre. Is it worth a visit? It's quite pricey at £7.

It's quite pricey at £7. Cheers Harriet Rich 01-03-2005, 21:00 Personally I'd say go for it, but take your own food and drinks, if you're paying £7 to get in you'll not want robbing in the Canteen, those Museums always charge a fortune for grub and drinks. Greybeard 01-03-2005, 21:03 It's fascinating if you're interested in the squalour the Vikings had to put up with.....authentic smells too, - don't ask ! :D Personally I'd recommend the Railway Museum, but as a girl you're probably not interested in those lovely old steam locos :P And I believe the Railway Museum is free. Plain Talker 01-03-2005, 21:29 it's actually not over expensive as attractions go. I took my granddaughter, a year ago. She totally loved it, and was fascinated by "professor time-machine" who "took us back in time" to Viking times (LOL) she was mesmerised by the skeleton, in the exhibition. I agree with rich's comment about how expensive the food is, there, but, yeah, shove a bit of pack-up, and a couple of bottles of pop in a rucksack, and you'll be quids in, (and well-away! lol) We also "did" the railway museum and my granddaughter was absolutely thrilled with the "Mallard", and she phoned her grandad up, saying "grandad! i am stood next to the Mallard! the fastest train ever!!" Okay, the highlight of her visit to NRM was her ride on "Thomas the Tank Engine" and meeting "Sir Toppam Hatt",( the "Fat Controller"), "Walter Whistle", and "Mrs Kindly" both places are good fun and really interesting Well worth a visit PT tslogf74 01-03-2005, 22:00 Not been since I was very young (it think it may have been not long afer it opened,) but I remember it so it must have been good :) I do remember the smells in particular. Zebra 01-03-2005, 23:41 Yep, I last went about 3 years ago, hd a great time. Also went to the York dungeon, walked down the river, saw fireworks over the river in a big display. There's also a church/cathedral worth popping into a castle up a steep hill (with an expensive museum) and a few other places. Make a point of visiting a web site or tourist info to find a map for all the other places. York is steeped in history. viking 02-03-2005, 07:27 The Jorvic centre is definatly worth a visit. I would not bother taking food, you are only in the "Time car" for around 7 minutes. The castle museum is also worth a visit and is cheap to get in. The railway museum is free to get in. We are going this weekend. boyface 02-03-2005, 07:44 Jorvic is ace. I'm a complete history geek tho', but honestly, it really is worth going. York itself has loads of great attractions that are free, just walking around the walls blows my mind. And, just the streets itself are purely historic, I love the place. And on a non - historic angle, it has an amazing indie cinema. Carmine 02-03-2005, 08:56 Originally posted by boyface Jorvic is ace. And, just the streets itself are purely historic, I love the place. I have to agree with you and declare myself a fellow history geek! Yorvik is a place that I like to revist every once in a while and York itself is a fantastic destination for a short break, especially if you can time it for the Viking or Roman festivals. One overlooked attraction is the undercrypt and vaults of the Minster, well worth a look. jackthedog 02-03-2005, 09:19 Totally worth it, if just for the 'Authentic Smells'. fleecemeece 02-03-2005, 09:47 Jorvik, is ace. As someone else said- just a walk around the city walls and the shops in the Shambles etc. is worth it. One thing worth mentioning- the sneaky sods at the Minster try and charge you top wack to get through the main entrance but it's free entry if you go in through the back of the gift shop. what's that all about? Sneaky is not the correct term. I dont know how you got in without paying, But a Compulsory charge has been at The minster since 2nd August 2003. (£4.50) This is to try to reduce an annual deficit of £600,000 each year. The fee is COMPULSORY, just like anywhere else. nomme 02-03-2005, 10:19 Originally posted by viking Sneaky is not the correct term. I got £15 worth of lead off the roof last time i went. :hihi: Lou 02-03-2005, 11:12 I think I must be the only one on here who didn't think The Viking Centre was that good. I went with a group of about 8 other friends and none of us thought it was that good. The smelly bits were funny for an added bit of authenticity, but I think we came out fairly quickly and thought "Oh, was that it?". I liked the rest of York though. I thought it was a very attractive place. We went on a Ghost Walk in the evening which was quite interesting, there's loads of them to choose from. jackthedog 02-03-2005, 11:17 Originally posted by viking It's worth £5. I got £15 worth of lead off the roof last time i went. :hihi: On the subject of lead, therefore briefly off the subject of Jorvik, a couple of friends of mine who were labouring on a building site a few years back stole a roll of lead from the site one night - they stashed it in the bushes near the road in the day and went back at night to collect it. It took them hours to lift it over the fence, get into the van and after lots of hard labour, pulled muscles, a night's missed sleep and lots of cuts and bruises, in the end I think they were offered something like £15 for it. Ha. Serves em right, thieving buggers! :D [/pointless off-topic tangent that nobody cares about] Strix 02-03-2005, 11:18 Am I the only one getting a blank page as their website? Perhaps they do student discount? The NEC do, but you have to ask for it, coz they don't advertise it. nomme 02-03-2005, 11:46 Originally posted by Strix Am I the only one getting a blank page as their website? Thanks Nomme  Pre-booking looks like a good idea Lou 02-03-2005, 12:06 Oh yeah, I think pre-booking would be a good idea. There was a massive queue when we went. Thankfully my mate had pre-booked us. Carmine 02-03-2005, 13:59 Bought a good mate one of the leather beer mugs they sell in the giftshop for his 30th. When I handed it over he was one happy 20 stone+ beer moster! harrietgirl 02-03-2005, 16:01 it sounds like overall the jorvic is worth going to! cheers for your advice. I think i will pop into the castle museum and railway museum as well. (I have already been to yorkminster and loved it. It might be £5 but you can pop in and out all day with your receipt.) ANGELUS 02-03-2005, 22:37 York is a class place to go and one of my fave places in the world. I would recommend. 1. Jorvik 2. York Dungeon 3. York Museums-- absolutely fantastic admin price. 4. Railway Museum 5. York Minster I wanted to go to cliffords tower but we ran out of time. And not forgetting, Dick Turpins grave if you like that kind of thing ala Most Haunted. We stayed at the Lady Ann Middletons hotel last year in march. Lovely hotel for the price. Have a good trip. Longcol 02-03-2005, 23:21 Jorvik certainly worth a visit - as are all the other attractions in York mentioned in the previous posts - plus if you're going in warm weather either a boat trip on the river or a ride round the city in an open topped bus. If you're going by car for the day I'd recommend you use the park and ride (well signposted off the A64) rather than try to park in the city centre. ANGELUS 02-03-2005, 23:45 Has anyone been lost in York at night near the minster. There's some creepy **** round there I can tell you. I wouldnt advise it though. Me and the missus got lost - 9pm near the minster. Freezing cold with a bitching biting wind blowing at us. Absolutely petrifiying it was, because there was no one around to help us out and it was our first time going around york as well! Lickszz 03-03-2005, 00:00 I have only been to the Jorvik once many years ago and I thought is was ok I think the Railway museum has gone downhill from what it was like about 15 years ago. I liked the Regiment of Yorkshire museum. Has anyone been around that Maze? fleecemeece 03-03-2005, 08:51 Originally posted by Carmine Possibly something to do with the thousands of pounds a day that it costs to keep the Minster open and in good nick.
