There's Barrys Bar on London Road (about level with the big flats), and Island pot (which is a takeaway) a bit further down nearer Mount Pleasant Park. Haven't had food from either though :)

If you're not in a hurry, allow about 8 hours for a meal.

There is the Yabba Hut (I think?) on Abbeydale Rd - it's not a caff or restaurant but sells jars of sauces etc. Haven't been in so can't give you any more info. UK Mama has had a bit of a bad rep for ages.

We went to Yabba Hut on Sunday. It does kind of double as a cafe. The place has been done really nicely and the food is great. We had curried goat and roti's and dumplings. However, the service is a joke, although you can see the owner is aware of the problems. The staff clearly need to be a little more on the ball. The people before us were charged wrongly, then we were served our food to "eat in" when we asked for it to be taken out. However, I definately would go back as these problems can, and should, be ironed out, and then food was worth another visit.

There used to be one in Hillsborough, opposite the tram stop/Rawsons Spring (or whatever the baths is called this week). Don't know if it's still there but it was a really good restaurant.

I noticed that they have now started stocking West Indian food in Abbeydale Road Tesco. Has anyone else noticed that they make a point of stocking any ethnic food from the area they are in? Gotta stamp on those locally run small shops.

Oh, and they even stock that Jamaican classic.... Cock Soup :hihi:

Hidden gem is the community centre takeaway at Duke Street church community centre- it runs on thursday lunchtime and then friday evening, its about 4 quid for rice peas and curried mutton, or chicken, also dumplings etc etc. huge loads for your money.

(nb- re tesco doing local stores out of business, tesco's planning permission to build mega store on spital hill is apprently conditional on them NOT selling 'ethnic' foods and competing with the local stores. we will wait with bated breath)

That's interesting. I wonder how enforceable that ruling is. Will they not be allowed to sell Pataks curry paste for instance or basmati rice?
