I've recently discovered that several tracks I had on my MP3 player are no longer there so, thinking I must have accidentally deleted them, I hooked the player up to my PC and tried to find them on my PC's hard drive. Guess what - they'd vanished from there as well, and also on my other PC which I use as a...er..back up for my back ups.

Am I just getting forgetful in my old age, or do some mp3s have a weird form of copy protection whereby they delete themselves after a fixed period?

not to my knowledge basil.

it's possible you moved the files to your mp3player rather than copied them accross.

Possible yes, but the mp3 concerned are no longer in all 3 of the locations I originally stored them?

Don't forget the name of the file (as it is viewed on your pc through windows explorer) is different to the track name as it appears on the mp3 / itunes screen.

It may be that you are looking for a track name on your computer, but all your files on your computer are showbn by their file name. (which may not be as you know the track)

it could be a virus that has set the hiiden attribute on the MP3 files. Go into my computer, then go to Tools > Folder Options > view Tab. Select show hidden files and folders. then Apply. Then have a look in the locatons and see if you can see the files.

If that sorts it then run an Anti- virus to get the root cause of the problem

I've heard that some of the onDemand TV show downloads (and similar) can be DRM'd to self-destruct... hadn't heard of MP3s doing it though.

Did you get them online, or rip from CD basil?
