Coventry Match Off
Posted on: Tue 19 Feb 2008

Sheffield Wednesday's match against Coventry City has been called off following a pitch inspection at 12.15pm today.

The club has been using undersoil heating since Sunday but persistent severe frost and freezing fog has left the surface unplayable.

Local referee, Craig Porter, inspected the pitch and immediately decided to postpone the Championship match.

Hmmm the conspiracy theorists might again speculate on this one.

There's no better atmosphere when the stadium is full & rockin like vs Kaiserslautern. The best grounds in the world to watch football like Red Star Belgrade's & the San Siro are not inbedded with hotels & museums, they are cold hard partizan places! That generaly have cold stone seat!!The Nou Camp isn't exactly 'nice' as far as comfort goes!. Hillsborough would still get the nod over Bramall Lane if a Euro Champ or WC match had to be played in Sheff.

blades and the corner bit :o you had to demolish a full stand
and had to sell players left right and center which i recall some fans said had cost them promotion (maybe wrong deane blake fjotoff etc etc)no so long ago

who was the chaiman back then? and whats to say the same cant happen at hillsbourgh? we only go on about the past because some off you guys have short memories

it wasnt long ago when you were in the brown stuff i think you blades are bricking it in case we do get investment and natural order is restored :P after all we beat you 2.0 at one of our lowest points in our long history

Start up whatever conspiracy theories you like, but I for one am not disappointed game is off. Re-arrange it for when we have a better idea of which club needs the points most.

I never like playing a club on the back of a humiliating thrashing, with a new manager watching the players he is about to inherit from the stand, where 99% of them will be trying to impress.

I haven't forgotten the backlash we got, after Gullit was sacked at Newcastle.

Wasn't the Anglo Italian only for second division teams when you were in it, and Port Vale reached the final?

I think you will find Kaiserslautern had won the Bundesliga just 16 months before Wednesday met them (and they might have won it a lot more, had their finances allowed them to continue bribing referees).

So the Bundesliga is a Mickey Mouse league?

You Blades really were spoilt, weren't you.

Your only meaningful European Competition was at Neuve Chappelle and on the Somme, after you won the cup in 1915!

Old Trafford, fantastic day out :)

Aye this is my memory too :) Am I bothered I've never seen my team in a "real" european competition? Not really, it's going to come soon :) Whilst our cup wins in our history are many many years ago and I wasn't even anywhere born at the point, they are getting further and further away for the owls. I firmly believe that both the owls and Blades will only be able to look in the history books to see when we last won something and not remember anything. Sad times all round

whats to stop you winning the cup this year rob (god forbid) ;)

Yeah thanks BB , Made a mistake it was 1974-75

First Division

David Mackay guided Derby County to their second league title in four years having overcome strong competition from Liverpool, Ipswich Town, Everton, Stoke City, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough in a title race which went right to the wire. There was disappointment at Bramall Lane after Sheffield United's title challenge ended in a failure without even a UEFA Cup place, but this would be as good as it got for the Blades as a sharp decline soon set in and within a few seasons had pushed them into the Fourth Division.

Second Division

Manchester United's directors kept faith in Tommy Docherty after their relegation to the Second Division, and he rewarded them with the Second Division championship to return them to the top flight. They were joined by Aston Villa (who also won the League Cup) and Norwich City. Docherty had built a new-look team containing players like Jim Holton, Stuart Pearson and Jimmy Greenhoff. Meanwhile, FIFA finally lifted George Best's worldwide ban from football. But Manchester United manager Tommy Docherty was not prepared to give him another chance at Old Trafford, and he joined Stockport County F.C. on a free transfer.

Millwall, Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday were the three unlucky clubs who were unable to escape the Second Division drop zone. In the space of a few years, Sheffield Wednesday had slumped to the Third Division having previously been a strong First Division side.

We had to beat Birmingham to get into the Europe and drew 0-0

done 86 of the 92 all with united. once got to 90 but teams got relegated.
clubs i hav'nt been to
yeovil, wycombe, morcombe,accrington,barnet,dagenham.

dont think this can be bettered only equalled as we havn't played these 6 clubs away (i think)

clubs i've been who's had 2 stadiums and i've done both.

arsenal,sunderland,bolton,reading,derby,stoke,sout hpton,coventry,walsall,hudd'field,bradford
that takes it to 97.

then non league.
newport, rushden, aldershot, torquay, exeter, cambridge ,york, oxford, halifax, altrincham, worksop, truro, skeg ness, to take it to 110.

scotland tour. raith,dunfermiline,falkirk. thats 113

others. millenium, and old wembley thats 115 in total

116 wendy night when i go to the riverside and a 117 in april the new wembley

When our new Kop is Built and the corner between the South Stand and Kop is filled in we'll have a ground ready for the World Cup in 2018.

McCabe is already working in conjunction with the FA to make sure any re development of Bramall Lane is in keeping with the specifications the FA are looking for in grounds to host international matches.

You Wednesday fans are priceless, Bramall Lane is a great stadium and in use 7 days a week making us money all the time, not like Hillsborough.

Don't get me wrong Hillsborough was a cracking ground in its day and is one of the few traditional football grounds left but its very dated these days with one good stand.

I honestly dont see a takeover and can see administration coming to the sty.
Just on here alone we have heard of 3 or 4 takeover bids and they have all fallen through, why do you suppose that is ?
No one in their right mind would want to chuck away 50 million quid before you even get started they would have to be :loopy:

Well you never know mate.

My concern about these takeovers is those involved don't seem to be interested in the football side of things just how much money they can make.

I find it strange a club like QPR has been taken over by a consortium of super wealthy business men, but they do have the advantage of been based in London.

I wouldn't say no one will take over Wednesday but i don't see a Dennis Hobson type character offering too much in the way of wealth or making a huge difference. The bills still need to be paid as does the debt.

To be honest, there have been 3 or 4 rumours of takeovers - there has only been one take over attempt which failed.

I do tend to agree though, any investor who comes in will more than likely simply shore up the debt - asking any single investor to plough £50 million in for no return is not likely to happen.

Administration may yet be an option - if someone is waiting in the wings to invest, waiting until the club is available to buy at a rock bottom price would be a sound bit of business.

NERVY-OWL
20-02-2008, 14:41
maybe not but there might be some. its not known wether wednesdayite or allen have been the cause of previous failings. even so, i dont know if they'd need to spend £50 million to takeover. leeds didnt even own their ground and had god knows how much debt but still got a takeover. i'm not saying it will go through as i've learnt not to believe it till it happens with wednesday but its not beyond happening, just got to wait. i do believe that administration will happen if a takeover doesnt happen by end of season, hoping it doesnt get that bad though

Who's been re-writing football history?

United never mounted a title challenge - they had a late run and finished 6th.

And a win at Brum wouldn't have meant a place in the UEFA Cup. Only the champs qualified for the European Cup, and the UEFA Cup places went to 2nd, 3rd, 4th and the League Cup Winners (Villa).

A win at Brum (unless by something like 10 - 0) would have meant United finishing 5th in 74/75 (remember only 2 points for a win in those days).

http://www.fchd.info/lghist/fl/fl1975.htm

If I remember correctly the number of points Derby got for the title was the lowest ever - and they clinched the title with a 0-0 draw at home to relegated Carlisle.

And come 75/76 United were as good as relegated at Christmas.
