View Full Version : Clearing up after your dog......
Just wondered if there are any dog owners on here that don't clear up when their dog craps in a public place?
We have a dog (so this is not an anti-dog thread).
I just want to know why? Do you also not wipe your own arse?
I cannot answer your first question as I don't have a dog..
The answer to this er.. Yeah

coopster1974 01-03-2005, 17:23 I think its safe to say there are but I doubt if they will admit it as it seems there is a pending rollocking from you..............
I know, I know, its a pretty useless thread, but its made me feel better.
Deejay - if you don't have a dog, you can't answer the second question either. But, I'm glad for your sake that you do, anyway!
WallBuilder 01-03-2005, 17:36 I'm a dog owner and my last dog and my present one were trained that they could only go to the loo in designated area's. For example in Millhouses Park they'd cross the river and go in the undergrowth, this isn't a problem as no-one walks on the far side of the river in most of the park.
When I have walked friends dogs that are not as well behaved I'll be watching them closely and again make darn sure they don't go to the loo anywhere that is a public thoroughfare.
and what if they do go in a public area?
I have two dogs and regularly clear up after them. Mostly they mess in the yard which is promptly shovelled and disposed of and when I do take them out I take those nappy sacks you can buy from pound shops to clear up if necessary.
I do have a few neighbours though who not only allow their dogs to mess on the streets as they walk them but also walk them without leads.
We have notices on our streetlights notifying such 'idiots' of fines etc and these neighbours have also been asked/told to keep their dogs on leads and to stop allowing them to mess at the end of neighbour's paths etc, but still they take no notice.

Same here, those nappy sacks do the job, I've even been know to offer them to people who "forgot" their own.
That always goes down well. ;)
A.B.Yaffle 01-03-2005, 18:11 We don't have a dog at the moment, but if we did then we would definitely clean up after it. My sister takes little bags out with her and puts her dog's mess in the bins.
Our cat is so well housetrained that he won't deposite solids outside.. he always runs inside to his litter tray when he needs to go!
Lol random posts like this make me laugh, we have a crazy dog who sometimes manages to 'hide' his excrement, but yeah we clear it up, and yeah we wipe our arse
crowefan 01-03-2005, 19:58 i do try..........always take a plassie bag but sometimes dare I say it...maddie can drop what only be described as a wet one ( dependent on what has been scoffed the day before)
and u know you just cant scoop it up sometimes........
WallBuilder 01-03-2005, 21:16 Sorry , clarification here,
Obviously if I was looking after a dog or owned a dog that fouled in a public area I carry plastic bags. On the one occasion I hadn't got anything I got a big long stick and played weird golf smacking the offending material into the river. However I know plenty of area's of derelict land or places where doggy doo's aren't going to be a problem and so try and make sure friends dogs get exercised there till they've performed. Also I have yet to meet a dog that if it is on it's lead cannot be encouraged to wait till they're in a suitable area. A perfect example of this is hillsborough park that has designated dog toilet area's although in these you are supposed to clean up after your animal, which I do.
Dog turd on pavements is on the increase - TO ALL YOU IRRESPONSIBLE, SELFISH, THOUGHTLESS AND LAZY DOG OWNERS, COULD YOU PLEASE CLEAR UP YOUR FILTH AND SAFELY DISPOSE OF IT? You make me sick.

Well I hope you still make an effort to scoop her wet ones up... even if you might have to lick the last bit up with your tongue! :D
thomsongirl 02-03-2005, 00:43 Yes and Yes to both. I have two dogs, which makes it difficult to scoop the poop, but I still do it, as I hate it when me or my own dogs tread in other dogs poop. Yuk!
Really gets my goat when dog owners don't pick up and know of a couple of them in Hillsborough Park who don't pick up. Never been near enough to say anything, but seeing how they walk their dogs off lead and stroll around as if they own the place, I doubt they are even bothered.

Somebody ought to tell Michael Howard to clear up his mess then! ;)
Regards,
Spacehopper.
I have a dog and always clean up after him!!
But in the 1970's when I was a little girl I regularly would come across 'white' dog dirt - I have never seen white dog dirt in years!!!!!
I am told this is because white dog dirt is 'old' - so we must be making some progress on cleaning up after our dogs!!
I thought back in the 70's dogs diets may have been differant to create this 'white stuff'!!
Does anybody else remember the white stuff ???????:|
matthewluck 02-03-2005, 02:09 hehe the white stuff, there used to be white dog turds in the alleyway behind my old house.
Where im from (cumbria) allerdale council provide free scoops and bags to scoop the poop, do they have a similar scheme in Sheffield?
matt :)

At Ulley country park, they provide free doggy bags, there is also plenty of bins. Not heard of any more
cgksheff 02-03-2005, 08:05 Free scoop bags available from the Council at First Point Reception, Howden House.
Cutglass 02-03-2005, 09:02 I've lived in Sheff most of my life and believe me your dog sh*te problem is as nothing compared to where I am now. I'm living in a place called Walton-Le-Dale at the moment (still trying to get back to Sheff, property shop notwithstanding) and I can honestly say it's the most disgusting place I have ever seen for dog sh*te! the local paper the Evening Post after numerous readers letters looked in to the matter and found that even with quite a number of dog wardens around, there wasn't ONE incidence of any one person being fined for leaving their doggy doo doo's and not cleaning it up. Theres dog sh*te left next to the dog bins that are up and around all over the place here but I've never yet actually see anyone clean up after their dogs. but I've never actually seen a dog taking a dump.
Is there a secret midnite club for dog owners to take their dogs out so that they can be unobserved and the dogs can sh*t in peace??
And no I don't hate dogs, just their sh*t.
crowefan 02-03-2005, 10:27 this is a lovely post isnt it????
I live in north wales for the weekends, and dog owners there are absolutely terrible compared with those in the city here, generally most people here do pick up errant plops....
what is it with the welsh ( ?? I am welsh by the way)
well done sheff!!!!
Okay, don't laugh, but....
There's a shower tray in our garden that's a dog toilet. I hate the smell of the stuff, so why would I let the garden be used as a toilet? When we go out Brude is sent in there first, and he knows the drill
Bags are on hand for moments of excitement, but he's been trained to get off the footpath and he should wait until he's told, but we haven't perfected that one yet
Thomsongirl you got that right - I don't use the park but I have neighbours on my street who are sooooooo particular about who does what on the pavement outside their home but yet persistently allow their dog to crap at the end of neighbour's paths etc. She's a nurse and you'd expect her to set an example really but one day I reckon they'll get a big return as people are getting sick of this family now.

Just be a little careful about how you phrase these sort of rants. There's a lady in Graves Park who occasionally beards dog walkers with a rather prermptory "'ave yer cleaned yer **** oop?". To which my inevitable smart-arse reply is: "no... but I've done the dog's".

Do you hand her your 'sandwich' bag when you say that? :hihi:
Don_Kiddick 02-03-2005, 12:43 I found a cure for my neighbours who allow their dogs to dump their loads at the end of my drive!
Wanna know what I do??
Easy.
Save a few manky old chicken scraps after dinner & leave them in your hedge bottom.
After the first time Fido gets hold of some the owner very quickly learns to leash the dog & drag it past our house too quickly for it to crap; let alone dine.
Any loose dogs are far too occupied with a free feed than to remember to hunker down & strain too.
The scraps often quickly go as Mr Fox visits our neck of the woods regulalrly too so they're not hanging round for ever.
 R E S U L T !
No. But I offer to lend her my 'hanky'
Well now you've admitted that - chicken bones should never be given to dogs as they are soft and brittle and can cause choking. Deliberately planting them for dogs to find could see you in court.
PS I don't condone the behavior of the dog owners allowing their dog to foul your path

In a word, no. I know how much the bike riders like to spray it up their backs. :hihi:

It's something to do with the way a dogs diet has changed. Now they are fed from the tin whereas most people used to feed their dogs on table scraps and bones. The white in the poo (so I'm reliably informed) was due to the calcium from the bones.
cgksheff 02-03-2005, 14:04 Absolutely correct, Mo.
A lot of ground bonemeal used to go into a lot of the feeds. Not so much now.
But if you let your dog have a good marrow bone now and then you will see the white powdery pooh of old.
i have come to the conclusion that this thread is a load of crap
Don_Kiddick - in a round a bout way you've given me a crazy idea. Thinking of making up a bit of gravy with a few chopped veg in, strategically placed so the owner thinks it's vomit.
WallBuilder 02-03-2005, 16:27 The woman in Graves Park can be rather annoying, she's instructed me in the past 'get your dog on a lead' What I can't understand is why if she dislikes dogs she insists on walking in the park. I've seen her in various spots around the place so she's not just using it as a short cut somewhere.
What really annoys me is when you see people who make absolutely no effort to stop their dog from going to the loo on a path or in the middle of a neatly cut area of grass, in fact at times it looks as though they've gone conveniently blind or they gaze in the oppisite direction.

Witty retort?: Get your nose out of his business? :D
If you see someone not clearing up on a regular basis, call the dog warden on 0114 2037410 with a description of the dog, the owner, the general time that they do it and where they do it.
Apparently they have unmarked cars and will give out a £50 fine on the spot and it rises to £1000 if not paid within 14 days.
It might not work, but its worth a try...can't think what else to do with the selfish b******s.....
There is a black Fiesta that parks up at one of the entrances to Norfolk Park every night about 9:30pm. In the car are two ladies and six or seven dogs. The first thing they do is get out and empty a carrier bag full of 'doggymagoo' over the fence in to Norfolk Park. Then they take the half wild 'mutts' in to the park, let them run riot, fighting and running up to people in a pack while barking and s******g all over the place! :(

I find that taking two plastic bags with you when walking the dog is the best policy. After you have picked the crap up with one bag you can put that bag into the other. In my area we have plenty of street bins, and I was wondering, am I breaking any laws by putting the “doggie do do” into these bins….even though it is double bagged?

Half-eaten McDonalds, Daily Star, 'Vote Labour' pamphlets, Doggy Doings,....what's the difference? They're all basically the same material.;)
Speechwriter 07-05-2009, 10:56 The worst kind of dog owners are those who pick the poo up in a plastic bag and then throw it away in a hedgerow etc. They have converted something that will biodegrade in a matter of days, to something that could be there for years.
There is a website out there now all about white dog dirt; whitedogdirt.com
timcobbold 07-05-2009, 11:08 The worst kind of dog owners are those who pick the poo up in a plastic bag and then throw it away in a hedgerow etc.
that is really ANNOYING! when i clean up after my dog on a walk I can end up carrying the bag for miles till I find a bin...
some people seem to think if they pick it up in a bag and leave it hanging off a bush or tree then some kind of magical poo-fairy is gonna turn up in the middle of the night to get rid of it:loopy:
Speechwriter 07-05-2009, 11:15 I agree with you Tim. I have walked my dogs down lanes where there have been over a hundred bags on the path, in trees and just thrown anywhere.
I find a bag of dog poo is quite a good handwarmer on a cold winters day.
alchresearch 07-05-2009, 11:47 I've also seen a large increase in bags on trees. It's like some kind of macabre Christmas decoration!

chris1983 07-05-2009, 12:39 i think the best thing to do is ban dogs from standard parks so they cant **** & attack innocent kids, and have "Dog Only" parks so if the owners dont pick up there own dogs **** chances are they will stand in it! bingo dog poo free parks for kids and dirty ones for irresponsible owners
Paul2412 07-05-2009, 13:02 Should horse riders not clean their mess up? They leave the roads in a right state!
chris1983 07-05-2009, 13:32 Should horse riders not clean their mess up? They leave the roads in a right state!
no just have the horse shot and made into dog food
twibstix 07-05-2009, 14:03 We have 11 (and currently 4 puppies) - all are walked together and all are cleaned up after, before anyone rants about how can you be so sure if you have that many dogs (and why do you have that many dogs) they have their own little rituals that give the game away and we let them off the lead cyclically - and keep an extra close eye on the spaniel as he's full of it!!!
I prefer to let my Dog do rate big uns, then sit on a bench and wait for an unsuspecting squasher
I've just moved to Sheffield and I have a dog. I always clean up after her and often find myself picking up other people's dog mess as well. I'm astonished by the amount of dog mess on the streets around here. It's not difficult to take a plastic bag out when walking and it's not difficult to pick up dog mess.
One thing that annoys me is that these inconsiderate dog owners who leave mess in the streets give all dog owners a bad name. It's not the dogs fault, they have to do it somewhere, it's the owners are completely at fault. If they can't be bothered to pick up mess they shouldn't get the dog in the first place.
nickmunich 07-05-2009, 15:02 Every morning I go for a jog round Hillsborough Park on the 'all weather dog walking track' and this morning I counted around 10 to 15 dogs in the park, mostly without leads, why do these owners think they have the right to let these things run around uncontrolled?
Near where I live there is an area planted with daffodils, this is the most popular dog toilet in the park, its an absolute rarity that anyone cleans up and the kids are there in the spring planting the daffodils.
I think the council should have the power to confiscate dogs without leads and what the park keeper calls 'the ****ers'.
Still it will take some kid getting their face ripped by a Staffie or American Bull Terrier before anything happens.
Some dirty scrote let their dog do its business right in front of my garden path on the pavement the other day, I was not happy. I took a placcy bag and moved it, only to find someone had let their dog go again in almost the same place the next day. Well, if i see them doing it i shall pick up the poo in a bag, follow them home and post it back to them.
It reminds me of that story about the bloke who puts the poo in a paper bag, outs it on the offenders doorstep, sets it alight and then knocks on the door - the offender opens the door, sees the fire, stamps on it to put it out...and gets a taste of his own medicine. Not sure that its legal though.
heeleyrachel 07-05-2009, 20:48 I let mine *hite all over and its wet and runny and dribbles down the path.... You'd think its caramel topping if you saw it! Fantastic!
Cuz im common as muck tha nuz !!
Name these chocs!!!
bladegirl1 07-05-2009, 21:54 the other morning was walking his dog and it fouled all over the pavement the owner never bothered to scoop it up just left it there dirty get, i walked past said something and he just smiled, i felt like rubbing his nose in the turd.

nowt wrong wi staffies and theres nothing wrong with dogs off lead mine are always off lead if its not busy, mind u mine very rarely go in the park just becouse its so busy and when we do its very early where no1 except dog walkers go and obviously clean up after myself dont go judging breeds and all dog owners
Stereophonic 08-05-2009, 09:01 My dog always does big craps and I never clean it up EVER, its disgusting. As soon as I've walked away it's not my problem amymore.

well said! my staffie's more likely to lick someone to death than chew their face off.
getting a bit sick of people always calling staffies vicious. they are NOT on the dangerous breeds list. i've heard more stories of kids being bit by alsations and sheepdogs than i have staffies, only the press likes to jump on the ALL staffies are vicious monsters bandwagon when really it is useless, chavvy, irresponsible dog owners who shouldn't be allowed to look after a hamster that's the problem.
staying on thread....i still pick up my dog's mess and put it in a bin!
mummysaz21 08-05-2009, 10:58 tim i have had a few people kick my dog becouse they are scared of her and called her viscious, which when i first got her yes she was a bit out of control but now hes had traning shes lovley with other dogs and people couldent ask fo a beter dog, but when people are kickeng her and they hav there own dog on a lead there dog then attacks her so she defends herself but then shes called viscious its bloody wrong, like i say yes when i first got her she did have a lot of fights, my friend will tell u that she did hurt her dog but now shes spayed ect shes great, they shouldent be judged and im sick to death of hem being judged badley
bladegirl1 08-05-2009, 12:35 if your dog fouls all over it is your job to clean it up,l what would you do if it had an accident in the house? leave it there or get some other mug to do it.

yes, but chances are someday someone will make it your problem esp. if you are a repeat offender.
and considering the diseases that can be carried in dog poo, diseases that can leave kids blind, dont you think you should be a responsble owner?
uniden300 08-05-2009, 19:25 my dog craps its his not mine tell him to clean it up and i do wipe my arse

bladegirl1 09-05-2009, 08:11 well said nerd on your last statement. If the owners are not willing to clean up the mess then they should not have pets.

Shimples.
Thought for today, who picks up a blind persons dog poop????
Guide dogs for the blind are taught, as part of their training with the guide dogs association, to only go to the toilet on command and in certain areas. Most blind people with guide dogs will have a specially built dog toilet in their yard or garden specifically for this purpose. Before going out for the day, or upon return the guide dog will be taught to use the dog toilet. The blind who have guide dogs tend to be responsible dog owners and not let them poop all over the streets unlike some of the other people on here
thedresser 10-05-2009, 06:03 As a responsable dog owner i always clear up and as regards the question on white poos its a build up off calcuim from eating boes as my dog has a bone now and then you still get white ones

With this in mind then, I would like to propose kid free parks so I do not have to listen to/see them wreaking havoc and destroying stuff for the "fun" of it.
It is not the dogs fault they have irresponsible owners. It is the owners that should be banned from having dogs if they are incapable of looking after a dog.
sheffsal 10-05-2009, 14:31 Im a dog owner of a beautiful border collie called guinness. I pick up after him cos I feed him. Im a responsible dog owner, I always have poop bags on me - free from meersbrook park parks and gardens office or £1 from poundland so no excuse for any dog owner only lazyness me thinks.
I have often walked over to these lazy owners n offered them a bag, cos they have obviously left home with out one :-) even on one occassion after the lady in question told me not on your f***k**g life, i picked it up knotted the bag and shoved it at her body n walked off whistling guin to follow. Yep Im an owner who allows my pooch off his lead - hes well trained n ignores other dogs he is too ball focused show him a ball n well nothing else exsists.
My worry about these owners that dont pick up - what else are the failing in taking care of their dog??? vets, injections, food and water and suitable open space at home (garden) dogs are not a status symbol they are your best friend - pick up and show you love you best friend ;-))

Some strange logic here. The dog doesn't benefit from you picking up and just because someone doesn't pick up doesn't mean that they don't care for their dog.It just shows that they're anti social.

shanes teeth 10-05-2009, 15:43 I can't imagine not picking up after your dog is laziness. It's a disgusting thing to have to do,but you have to do it.Looking after the dog is totaly different.
It's a pity the 'pick up after your dog' message hasn't gotten through to a lot of owners who utilise the trails out in the Peak District. Sometimes, the grassed areas to the side of the paths are minefields of dog doody.:(

I think clearing up on paths and in parks in the city is essential,as is on paths in the country. But in woodland and moorland in the country, well it's just one of loads of varieties to be wary of.Animals are meant to sh in the woods!

It's the grassed areas at the side of the paths I'm on about. There may be sheep titty there as well, but at least the sheep variety doesn't smell as foul as dog eggs.
There's something inherently nasty about meat-based cack when compared to veggie types such as sheep, horse and cow.

But they do make up for it in quantity! And horse sh does tend to always be in the middle of the path.

I expect horse, sheep and cow droppings in copious amounts in the countryside, but if folk are expected to pick up dog crap in local parks, then so they should in National Parks, especially close to paths and picnic areas. I can't see any logical reason why one is different from the other.
Anyhow, didn't you ever have horse muck on your rhubarb? Cheaper than custard.:D
shanes teeth 10-05-2009, 16:37 I think the difference I suppose is the difference between wild places and "man made" places. You're obviously right about picnic areas.I think I make the distinction because wild animals sh. in wild places and if dogs were still wild that's where they'd do it.That may be my own bit of twisted logic! Our dog only ever does it in our garden, and the amount he lays down there doesn't leave any to share around.
antibuyer 10-05-2009, 16:39 We regularly find Mess left on the verge on Greenwood Road, High Green, and wish we could do something about it.... any sensible suggestions?
I guess I could watch to see who does it, then post the mess through thier letter box!
There are signs on lamp-posts saying it is illegal and they will get fined etc... but who fines them?

But all the trails, footpaths and amenities in the Peak District are manmade areas. And as dogs aren't wild in this country then they must have owners who should be picking the crap up that they take into the public amenity areas.
Dog doody in Derbyshire is no more natural than Human poo in Parson Cross park.:)
shanes teeth 10-05-2009, 16:56 I did say on the moors and in woodland, not on trails or paths. And the wild packs that roam Parson Cross probably do mark their territory in that way!

As I wasn't talking about the moors and woodlands only the grassed areas at the sides of paths, and I was talking about 'peoples' dogs, not wild packs, then mention of moors, woodlands and wild packs has nothing to do with what I'm refering to.
Here it is again:

shanes teeth 10-05-2009, 17:16 Sorry no, I didn't mean wild packs of dogs at Parson Cross,I was being facetious.I think actually we generally probably agree!
I Always pick up after my dog and think every dog owner should!.

Got ya!:hihi:
Sorry about tangled wires mate.;)
Anyhow, I've decided to play my part after my death.
The family's going to dedicate a dog poo bin (benches are old-hat) in Hillsborough Park in my name. There will be a plaque on it which says:
"In loving memory of saxon51. As in life, full of crap."

WallBuilder 10-05-2009, 17:51 Maybe some-one should develop a can of something that when you spray a doggie doo-doo it freezes it making the arguement that it is smelly and gross to touch no longer applicable or at least not to the same extent. Bad enough when owners let their dogs ful on the pavement but last week sitting in a picnic area with a couple of tables and the smell and the sight was less than nice.

It's not just the smell and sight though, there's the flies landing on your food as well. :gag:

Great idea.See you on Dragons Den:thumbsup:Trouble is you've told us the idea without securing it first.I'm off down to the lab to see what I can come up with.
WallBuilder 10-05-2009, 18:22 In France the council street cleaners do have a freeze product, they zip around on little mopeds with a back pack with a long nozzle when they come across an offending mess they zap it with the freezingstuff and then it is sucked up into the back pack.
I saw this on a program years ago which gave me the idea.

When the police clear up after their horses ,ill clear up after my dog!!!!
I always clear up after my Dog, i remeber when she was around 11wks old & someone elses Dog did a massive dump right in the middle of the footpath outside my house, i had 2 people knock on my door asking why i hadnt cleaned up after my dog!?! i was stood on my doorstep trying to explain how the hell could my 11wk old pup produce something 3 times the size of her plus she'd only been carried out the house to be taken to the vets for her jab!
my street is littered with muck due to lazyness of other people! its really annoys me & people that do clear up after there dogs get blamed!
Driving past PDSA this morning at about 8.15, and a man with a black dog, let it do its business, bang outside the gate (whislt he (the man) had his back turned), then walked back up the pathway, without a backward glance.
I always have nappy sacks in my car, for when we are out with our dog. If it wasn't for the amount of traffic behind me I would have pulled over and offered him a bag!!

Littlefinger 11-05-2009, 09:40 dog nappies, its the future! .......
Odd-jobs 11-05-2009, 10:28 I've not gone through this thread, so this may have been mentioned before but while out and about recently I've noticed owners who've scooped up their dogs muck put it in a bag and left the bag on the floor.
At least dog poo on its own will eventually rot down.
Hangings too good for these people

A bit of an over reaction don't you think?
Also I have to say that I have been known to leave a bag in a discreet place while I am out if I am a long way from a poo bin, but I do collect it and dispose of it on the return trip.
It is absolutely appalling the amount of bags left in the bushes in the park where I walk my dogs, who do they think removes them? it's really not fair to expect other people to deal with the bags at all.

There is no excuse for that at all, the PDSA actually provide bags, paper roll and even mops, there is no reason why he couldn't have gone back and cleaned it up....but then maybe he did when he got to the door where the clearing up stuff is kept.
Odd-jobs 11-05-2009, 10:44 A bit of an over reaction don't you think?
I deleted the drawing quartering and head on a spike bit It just left me with the hanging.
All of the above do however still apply to fishermen who use the canal between the City center and Meadowhall.
Total Chaos 11-05-2009, 11:24 Just wondered if there are any dog owners on here that don't clear up when their dog craps in a public place?
We have a dog (so this is not an anti-dog thread).
I just want to know why? Do you also not wipe your own arse?
I cant wipe my arse, i dont have any arms thank you.

Maybe he did.
But if you have a dog, you should have a poo bag. I always carry a few spares, in my pockets, bag, car etc. In fact, I'm surprised I haven't ruined my washing machine before now, when I forget to empty my jeans pockets!

There is a woman who takes her dog with her when she meets her kids from school, I see her quite often, she stands next to the bin at the school gates chatting to friends while her dog does it's business in front of the school gates (and next to a bin!). When she notices what it's done, rather than cleaning it up she just walks away from it and stands a few metres away from it and strikes up her conversation again, leaving her animals **** there for the primary school kids to tread in on their way home…nice.
bladegirl1 11-05-2009, 16:59 it ios frustrating shelber that you are one of the decent people who do clean up after their dog , while others who leaves their dogs poo all over near your house are either ignorant and dead lazy, next time they do it watch where they go scoop it up in a bag then dump it in their garden then she how long it is before they clean up after their dog.
