Due to err.. ahem, drunken revellrey until the wee small hours last night in honour of my birfday I am not feeling as tip top today as would normally be the case.

Worse thing is - I actually fell asleep at my desk today doing some admin on the computer! The room was warm and quiet and no-one had been in for ages so I leaned back in my chair, stretched out my legs and dozed off! Woke myself up snoring!!! I have never done it before although I do recall falling asleep in class more than once at school in a warm classroom and boring lesson. Is this a common practice? Anyone else done it?

Must admit do feel better for it although I think an early night might be in order!

Fallen asleep at my desk? I've fallen asleep in the middle of running a tutorial, behind the wheel, in the bath, and once on a wretched train. Ended up in ruddy Motherwell.

I used to find the server room the worse place to stay awake, all the humming and quiet little clicks and noises the mainframe made just sent me off into a nice peacefull sleep......zzZZZZZ

the trick is to have a task of undeterminate length and somewhere that you won't be disturbed.

I used to deliberately doze during my lunch hour, but not these days.

I think work places should have facilities for a lunchtime nap. Productivity in the afternoon would be greatly increased. This country's work ethos is warped.

As well as falling asleep at work, I used to have a habit of falling asleep on the kitchen floor after a few beers.

I believe this is the practice in several forward-thinking Jananese companies!

I have one at my business, but it is only used for emergencies, and when I say emergencies, I mean for me!! Sometimes i let the other employees lay around, but not to much!!

We do have a dark room that no one uses. I've often thought of locking myself in there for 40 winks.

When I was 17 and worked at Blackpool Sealife Centre, I fell asleep on the admissions desk... In my defence, I was well wrapped up, with several heaters pointed at me, and had one too many vodka's the night before...

Another time, I fell asleep in the toilet at Sahibs on West Street...

OK, just to clarify the point. The cat's bed used to be in the adjoining morning room. When intoxicated the little fluffy bed looked quite tempting, so the moggy got shoved onto the floor and I happily slept on it's bed. This was around the same time that I used to sleep on the kitchen floor. My mother was understandably concerned about me.

Some years ago I worked for a telecoms firm, costing new radio systems. Yes, fun..... :)

The office I was in used to be the Governor's House at Derby Gaol, and had small, ill-ventilated rooms with painted shut windows. It was summer and my desk caught teh sun. There were numerous afternoons when I'd rest my eyes and find myself waking up 15 minutes later.

On other contracts I've been known to fight sleep in very boring meetings.

And like Timo I've fallen asleep in the bath and on trains. The bath is horrible....you wake up cold and wrinkled... :(

I once stayed in a hotel in Eastbourne where I was fixing a data system in the local newspaper offices, expenses were always generous in those days!. And in the evening, when I'd finished and had my dinner in the hotel, after a bracing walk along the sea front before a couple of small drinks in the bar were I had an excellent laugh with the bartender who was about my age. I went back to my room where I got another lager from the mini bar and pulled the tv near to the bathroom door and drew a nice bath full of warm water for a soak before bed.
I woke up at about 3.30am in a freezing bath with the tv hissing loudly. brrrrr

I nodded twice in a thing at college last night for my son.

Regularly fall asleep once i get home from work if i sit on sofa.

Used to have real problems in previous job in the afternoon when i had to do computer stuff, i had to get up and do other stuff to stop myself.

Lectures of any kind i have problems staying awake.

And films! how many have i only seen half of them.

Basically if it is warm and dark and i'm sat down, and i aint being hassled i will be asleep, no problems.

Dont get chance to do at work now as i don't sit down to work. So job safe for now. Just pick me up when i fall over. :D

I used to drive a company car the length and breadth of the country, and more than once I had to stop and walk about because I was having trouble keeping my eyes open. Especially long monotonous drives down the M5 to the west country. Usually a walk about in the feresh air for 10 minutes used to do it.

And more than once I have landed at Manchester airport back from a cheap package holiday in the middle of the night, having not slept for 24+ hours because they throw you out of your room at noon and you have to guard your luggage in the lobby for 14 hours until you get your transfer back to the airport!, and had to stop and have a walk about on one of the car parks at either end of the snake pass because I kept clipping the kurb due to my extreme exhaustion.

My friend once fell asleep in a lecture, despite me kicking her repeatedly trying to wake her up. She then woke herself up by sitting bolt upright and shouting "GO ON!" really loudly. It kept me laughing for weeks.

I've never fallen asleep at work. I think if anyone here did and got caught they would get sacked. I've got other colleagues sat quite near me so I'd definately get spotted. Having said that, I've never even nearly fallen asleep either.

Although I do sometimes think that being able to have a nap at lunchtime would be quite nice!

I'm surprised the number of votes for people who have nodded off is higher than those who never have! I thought it would be the other way round. I can understand falling asleep in lectures but at work at your desk, well I'm surprised!

Most research has indicated that people naturally will have a dip in the afternoon. Which is why a siesta is a jolly good idea. If you get knackered in the afternoon, there's not a lot you can do about it. It's not like people nod off intentionally. As I said earlier, regardless of whether people nod off or not, the vast majority of people will slow down in the afternoon. If you consider the amount of man hours that are lost in productivity it's quite ridiculous that we still try and work this way. As per usual, business just doesn't consider the fact that people are only human and not machines.

Yeah, true enough. Some days I do start to feel like I'm flagging in an afternoon. Perhaps because I know I WILL get caught if I ever did fall asleep is plenty enough a deterrent to stop me falling asleep!

I used to be able to sleep on the train from doncaster to peterborough and wake up just as we got to the sidings at New England.

I never once wound up in KX, and still don't know how I knew where I was. It's not like I woke up as they announced the station, coz I slept through retfor, newark and grantham and was awake in time for the peterborough announcement  :loopy:

Waiting at the lights at the bottom of netherthorpe hill, the car in front didn't move when they went to green, pipped, but with no response, and by then lights were on red again. the second time the lights went to green, same thing happened, I got out and the driver of car behind me got out, went to the car infront, and yes a fat bloke fast asleep sitting in his car at traffic lights. Needless to say we managed to startle him a little with some colourful language, and boy did he speed up that hill, even going through the lights at red......

I take it she was good then!

I once fell asleep at the end of a night shift. Flat out on the desk. Was woken by the morning shift arriving. 200 guests knew no different did they!

I remember once whilst at school (aged about 13) we had a physics teacher who quite often came into the Monday morning class worse for wear. I remember him once saying "sort yourselfs out today" and proceed to put his head down on the desk and slept through the whole lesson.

I also remember once being in Paris on this course that was really really boring. The course was in three languages, French, German and English so you were only ever active for a third of the course anyway. After lunch, I had this German guy sat in front of me. His head went against a pillar and he started snoring, really loudly. Being typical English, our contingent was sat at the back so everyone in front kept giggling and turning round and looking at us!! No doubt we got blamed for the German falling asleep as well!! The course lecturers just carried on regardless and let the guy sleep.
