hiye im wondering if anyone can help me,

ive been having the same problem for a while now. this is what happens:

1. After having the computer switched on for a couple of hours is just turns itself off. its kinda like its restarting (i'll be in the middle of doing somthing and off it goes) but it must be being shut off because "scan disk" comes up when it comes back on (which it does itself straight away).

that was the 1st problem which is still happening, but then problem number 2 started.....

2. when i try to turn off my computer i go to the start menu and select "shutdown" the computer proceeds to shut down but it kinda gets stuck and then restarts instead, but as with problem number 1 its like its being shut off because when it comes back on scan disk runs again. every now and agen though it will do it properly.

not as if problems number 1 and 2 werent bad and annoying enough, yesterday problem number 3 started happening.........

3. now then when i turn my computer on it starts up normally (most of the time running scan disk 1st because either problem number 1 or 2 happened the previous time) but then when it loads windows up (the desktop screen comes up like normal) before its had chance to load any programmes up problem number 1 happens. the computer just shuts off and restarts, going through scan disk agen. This happens twice, then on the 3rd time of loading up windows it finally works.

i have run loads of spy and anti virus thingys, i have zone alarm (the full paid for version) and they have come up with nothing.

i have windows 98 and its on a 9yr old computer, i have 128mb ram, 233 processor and 4.3 gb hard disk.

these problems are starting to get very annoying.

can anyone help me please???????

please please help!

:help: :help: :help:

could possibly be the cpu overheating, you need to take the case side off and using a small paintbrush clean the fan and heatsink, if the fan/heatsink are clean then it sounds like a software fault which means reinstalling window, if that doesn`t solve it then it could be that after nine years the cpu is on its last legs
hope this helps

Scandisk will run if there was an error when the machine was last shutdown.

To stop Scandisk from running on a bad shutdown.....

Click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information (or Start > Run and enter "MSCONFIG" and press <enter>). Then click Tools > System Configuration Utility.

Now (under General settings) Click the Advanced button. Tick the box marked "Disable Scandisk on Bad Shutdown", then OK, then OK, then Close System Configuration Utility and (if asked) allow to reboot (Scandisk will now not run if Windows encounters an error during Shutting down).

This will not, however, stop the premature shutting down of the PC.

Start from basics:
It could be as simple as a poor connection/broken wire in the power supply, or a sticking switch/button.

Sounds like a faulty CPU fan to me (although from memory the old socket 7 Pentiums only had heatsinks).

Try running the PC with the case open for a while see if the rebooting continues. You could also try replacing the CMOS battery. Or you may just find that after 9 years your comp is dying a death

could be an under-rated power supply. do you know what wattage psu you have in your machine?

Sounds like you have a virus which has corrupted your hard drive. The exact same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I've got Windows service pack 2, a firewall and Adaware which all came up with nothing. Plus I never open emails which I don't know about. The engineer said that I must've downloaded a corrupt file. I had to re format everything and lost loads of stuff. Get it sorted before it happens to you!

yup i agree i had the same problem and it was a virus which didn't show up on my anti virus or adware
i had to download something called stinger which went thru the whole of my machine and cleared it out
