View Full Version : Anyone from the Woodthorpe area? dee40 01-03-2005, 15:36 Does anyone come from or live on the woodthorpe area. kirky 01-03-2005, 15:39 i come from manorpark but know the woodthorpe very well and loads of people that live there. Litha 01-03-2005, 15:45 i used to live up the road on audrey road, now live on the viking lea. we had a look at the empty shop next to the wood thorpe bakery to open a tattoo studio but went down Darnall instead been here just over a year and half and love it, glad we dint take the one at woodthorpe. Litha dee40 01-03-2005, 15:52 I used to live on woodrove ave but moved off years ago though family still live there. kirky 01-03-2005, 16:05 Originally posted by dee40 I used to live on woodrove ave but moved off years ago though family still live there. i worked on there when the houses were modernised in 84..the site office and compound were where tentown used to be tosh13 01-03-2005, 16:44 My family lived on Chadwick Road for years,it was a decent place when I used to go up there & go to the High Noon pub. Those were the days. Cutglass 01-03-2005, 17:25 I used to live on Mosborough road, just adjacent to the legendary High Noon and what a sh**thole that is now. People slate woodthorpe off quite a bit, but I lived there 8 years and found it be like most estates, mixture of good and bad people. I hated the road where I lived, mainly because of the kids that played out on there, parents in the pub and kids playing footy or some other equally rowdy games til quite late and quite a few of the neighbours had troublesome dealings with these kids, they had to get the housing and police involved. But my eldest son still lives in the area tho not on that road, and he wouldn't move from there for love or money. dee40 02-03-2005, 20:52 Called on to the woodthorpe today to visit my sister.I dont think its any worse than any other area but it has changed a lot.My family shop on the richmond as woodthorpe shops not good though years ago it was a good shopping area with all the local shops you needed. There are a lot of new houses on manor part but didnt get to see the high noon area though i presume the pubs still there.Woodthorpe school is still going strong though they are going to rebuild it.A lot of people that live on there have grown up on there and there familys are still around them.I moved of in 1983 before they were modernised we didnt have central heating then and the toilets were in the porch.I dont know how we coped with out central heating now as always have mine on.Remember my mum making coal fire up before we got up for school so room was warm for us.We thought it was great when she got the gas fire.we used to hang around on the streets near shops after school or on the bowling green near community centre. As i got older i went in the high noon as it was local It was always the same old faces. Many of my friends still live on there and would never move away.:) Ant 02-03-2005, 20:59 My very first home was a council house opposite the shops on Hastilar Road South. We were burgled on our first night, I was once nearly knocked down by a car that crashed through a garden fence on the opposite side of the road (joyriders had bailed out further up the road), and we almost had a riot one night for no apparent reason - the road was filled with blue transits and yobs. Never a dull moment, but no good for the blood pressure. tosh13 03-03-2005, 09:39 Originally posted by dee40 Called on to the woodthorpe today to visit my sister.I dont think its any worse than any other area but it has changed a lot.My family shop on the richmond as woodthorpe shops not good though years ago it was a good shopping area with all the local shops you needed. Many of my friends still live on there and would never move away.:) My mums family all lived on Chadwick road ,the Cutts & my uncle lived in my grandmas house no 12. kirky 03-03-2005, 09:42 Originally posted by tosh13 My mums family all lived on Chadwick road ,the Cutts & my uncle lived in my grandmas house no 12. did you know two twin girls that lived at number 2? can't remember there names.......... tosh13 03-03-2005, 13:38 what year would that be. dee40 03-03-2005, 21:17 Originally posted by kirky did you know two twin girls that lived at number 2? can't remember there names.......... Around 14ish. Anyway… I was doing a similar thing to you kirky. To impress my new girlfriend I took her to the Rex….all the way from Crookes on the 95 bus….they were showing Kelly’s Hero’s for about the 1000’ time…good choice of film to impress your new girlfriend (NOT). And trying to impress her even more I wouldn’t let her pay for anything. As we left the cinema Theresa noticed I had chewing gum stuck to my rear. I became completely baffled by her attitude…..she came across as if it was my fault I’d got the damned stuff stuck to my new trousers. I soon got fed up with her….lesson learnt….as a male it’s always our fault no matter what it is. The Rules: Rule 1: The woman is always right. I think a Miss Burley was the Head of the Infants school then and there was definitely a Miss Vaughn. I remember Miss Vaughn well as when I was 6 years old I was in love with her and had plans to marry her when I grew up. There was a Trevor Bullivant in our class and I think a boy called Gordon Mole [or Maw?]. That's all I can remember now . Going back a bit ! I remember a few kids from Audrey Road , though. We lived on there , near the junction with Lathkill Rd. nxs 31-03-2005, 14:56 well im a woodthorpe girl through and through first i lived on holbrook rd then fishponds rd and now fishponds rd west. nxs 31-03-2005, 15:06 just realised who you are courtneychar, i was the one asking about your parakeet and didnt realise at the time that i knew you. dee40 02-04-2005, 20:33 Originally posted by Fareast Dee40 I went to Woodthorpe School from 1945-1949. Fareast 02-04-2005, 23:56 Dee I'm not sure when the school was built either------I would guess sometime in the 1930's , roughly when the Woodthorpe Estate was built ? I had a much older cousin and her and her friend were doing teaching practice at Woodthorpe school , during the war and they stayed at our house on Audrey Road. At that time , by the way , Lathkill Road only went up half-way to the junction with Lowburn [?] Rd. and then it was all a big field , right through to Woodhouse Road. Masefield Road was a dead-end and Lowburn Road only had the odd house at either end. I suppose they'd stopped building when the War started. Also at the bottom end of Audrey Rd. , opposite the school , there was a small field where they hadn't finished building. This was on the "bottom" side of Audrey Road. As kids , we loved playing in the fields and of course it was a short cut to Barnards Toy shop at the top of Woodhouse Rd ! One thing baffles me. They are re- building a school that was probably put up in the '30's. Yet they are still using schools which were built in the 19th. century. For instance , after Woodthorpe school , I went to Pomona St. school , built in the 1880's , I bet , and that 's still going strong. Anyone know why that is ? Is it to do with the building material ? Or , maybe the teachers at some schools are a rough lot , compared to others ? Dee----you've made me feel ancient ! But----nice memories. crowny 04-04-2005, 15:08 hiya i live on the woodthorpe and have lived there all my life. I Went to the woodthorpe school but now at City school. Woodthorpe is ok but i dont get sleep at night cus of joyriders lol. At woodthorpe school the head teacher was mr sandilands bout now he left and a new teacher took over. I live 2 seconds away from the woodthorpe school , on the rd called fishponds rd west. Ime enjoying woodthorpe alot but now things are getting borin for us kids. ppl complane wen we play football on there front but we ave no1 else to play. We have no parks but all this is happining cus the Woodthorpe school is gettin rebuilt. Parts of the Woodthorpe school is now been nocked down but a new school is being built. Ime a kid her hangs round on shop but wen stuff happens ime off mens. We now have a curfue on Woodthorpe and have to be in for 9:00 which i think is a bit unfair, also the police say u cant be in a gang of more than 2 but ppl arnt really listenin to wot they say about that. Well ime out of hear bye !! Swiller 04-04-2005, 19:13 "Tony and Janet leave The Springwood on 31 March. I’ve not heard if anyone is taking it over." Yeah Tony n Janet left the Springwood on 31 March, and at the moment there is no current person taking it over though a local who goes in is thinking of taking it - will have to wait & see!!! Crowny! - Your sis must be Nats, went to woodthorpe with her & City, also know our dad and uncle Ian! The Richmond is getting a new Landlord, Mark Caterer, and think he takes over some time in the next month or so (not sure!) - The beer should get better then LOL. I've live on the estate all my life accross from the shops and have now moved onto lower manor - but the estate has changed over the years. i'm in my 20's now but can remember every summer when the balloon factory was open the lifters used to come and give us kids 100's of balloons! Old Mr Twirly (who's still knocking about), Geeny Woods, the Green shop! Binda's knackered the shops up - it's true that U walk in now & there's nothing, & if there is, it's waaaay over priced. Lived on the Corner house on Hastilar Rd South (just opposite shops for 21 yrs 82-03) always had the BEST garden every summer until we sold it last year! :-( One last thing - anyone remeber when that hot air balloon landed on the field? he1 he! he! Swiller nxs 04-04-2005, 19:53 i dont complain when u play football outside my house crowny lol. Spaulding 05-04-2005, 12:14 does anyone out there have relatives who remember springwood cottage, which used to be half way down pit fields? dee40 05-04-2005, 13:37 Originally posted by Spaulding does anyone out there have relatives who remember springwood cottage, which used to be half way down pit fields? I lived on Audrey Road until about 1949 and remember them both after all these years ! I'm sure Barbara was a pretty girl, with fair hair and Ruth was tall for her age with darkish complexion and short, black hair. Mind you, I was only 8 at the time so my memory might be playing tricks ! I do distinctly remember that maybe when I was a toddler, I couldn't say my ' R's ' properly and used to get laughed at for calling R.R. ' Wuth Wobinson ' ! EEZA 02-06-2008, 12:19 Any one remember Zaffa M'bye and Andy Lilliker (Lil/Lilly)? Would be interesting to know what they are doing now. devlin 02-06-2008, 18:24 I remember trevor if thats any gud lived on corner of chadwick and woodthorpe road They moved in to one of the bigger houses on Richmond Road, father was a TV repair man but seem to recall he died quite young and the mum and 2 boys Trevor and Ian moved on to Richmond Road somewhere near the Davis' backing on to Richmond Park. Incidentally (unless he bought it later) Mark Caterer didn't move in to the Pye's house he moved in to one of the houses opposite and did it all up. The house he and Beverley Jacques moved in to used to belong to the alcoholic couple her name was pearl and she used to roll up and down Chadwick Road off her head getting her whiskey form Mrs Howe's if it was open or the shop next to the Collivers (was it a co-op) at the top near the Hign Noon. I know this because Pearl's old Mum Mrs Smith lived on Chadwick Road between Michael Poole's house and my mum and dads house on the corner of Audrey and she was always there on the cadge devlin 02-06-2008, 18:34 when i used to go to the baths as a nipper would i be right in saying the house to my left (as i took the photo's) was a sweet shop? others are right, the house directly to your left from this phote is where old Mrs Smith lived up until the mid seventies when she died- after that the Croft's moved in Betty and Herbert (he was a butcher in castle market and they still live there now) they had a married son at the time called Paul, twins Cheryl and Steven and a younger girl Leigh who would be say 45 now.... she married Russel Howe the granson of the sweetshop owner... the shop was the first building to your right as you took the photo.. below Audrey Road misstwinkle 04-12-2009, 02:27 does anyone know the maw family? Fareast 05-12-2009, 14:32 MissT-----Glad to be able to give you a bit of info. I can even remember, vaguely, that your grandad was a fairly tall, thinnish boy, with dark hair. The only other name I remember from our class is ' Trevor Bullivant ' who lived on Chadwick Road, about halfway between the school & Woodhouse Road. Did your grandad ever mention the lady who lived on the corner of Chadwick Road And Audrey Road ? Sometimes she used to make lovely toffee lollipops and we kids would call at her back door to buy one, after school, if we heard she was ' in business '. Our first teacher was a Miss Vaughn [ sp. ? ]. I dreaded leaving there and moving right across town, but like most kids, I suppose, I soon got used to my new ' borstal '----new canes, new detentions, new lines.......happy days really ! With the strict discipline,we kids felt more united and at least the teachers never used to mug us or beat us up after school ! misstwinkle 05-12-2009, 15:41 my mum said she rememberd him saying about the lollipops, she also says do you remember any of his brothers. Not much help, sorry, but, perhaps part of the jigsaw ? I was at Woodthorpe school between 1944 and 1950 and I remember an Albert Maw, a tall thin kid. I can't remember much about him as our paths never crossed outside school. I also remember the purveyor of toffee apples! Mike Fareast 06-12-2009, 13:15 Puffin4, Yes, MissTwinkle mentioned there were some brothers. Do you remember Miss Vaughn ? I can 't remember now, if I started school in Jan. 1945, Sept. 1945....or Jan. 1946 ! Anyway, Miss Vaughn was my first teacher. My much older cousin had also done her teaching practice there, during the war-----Miss Mumford-----ring a bell at all ? Also, I remember the Priest family from Chadwick Road, but not at the school itself. We all used to play [ and have stone fights ! ] in the field that lay between Woodhouse Road and Lowburn Road. Happy Days-----Sore Heads ! Puffin4 06-12-2009, 14:59 Hi Fareast, I don't recall either of the teachers you mentioned. The head at the infants was Miss Birley and my class teacher was Miss Hopkins. The junior school head was Mrs Batey, who administered the cane to me on several occasions, mainly for being late. Both the heads were of similar build; short portly. My class teacher for most of my time in the juniors was Miss Edith Duncan who went on to become the head at Ellesmere Road Juniors. I didn't live close to the school, I grew up on Richmond Hill Road, down near the park and my daily trip to the infants was on the 32 bus (a ha'penny half please) - about two stops if I recall. Dinner money was two bob a week and the milk was free. We also used to take a tanner a week for our bank; when our account reached £1, it was transferred into a Trustee Savings Bank account. I left Woodthorpe in 1950, when I went on to Nether Edge Grammar to finish my growing up! Mike manaman 07-12-2009, 00:54 MissT-----Glad to be able to give you a bit of info. We used to go from Standhouse School on the Manor to Woodthorpe Baths for swimming lessons. We used to spend our 1d bus fare home on a lollipop, and then have to walk all the way up the hill back to the Manor. As I remember, the lollipops were disc shaped mounted on a stick and were made of cinder type toffee. Worth the walk home (unless the weather was really bad). devlin 07-12-2009, 11:30 Did your grandad ever mention the lady who lived on the corner of Chadwick Road And Audrey Road ?
