I've signed up for the alpha test of qik (http://www.qik.com) which lets you use your smartphone as a roaming camera with sound (very good indeed, highly recommended)

I am with 02 PAYT using with the web (GPRS) bolt on (unlimited data transfer (subject to a fair use ceiling of 200mb/month )), but qik refuses to connect to the qik server using this connection. If I try connecting to qik via wifi here at home there are no problems whatsoever

Other qik users (mostly US and Europe) seem to have no problems streaming over the cellular network.

My questions are: do mobile operators restrict ports or types of traffic on their GPRS connections? Do any mobile operators offer a less restricted connection that might work with qik?

Anyone else tried qik?

What phone do you use? Qik only supports certain phones. I would think that GPRS isn't fast enough to stream live video

n95, several qik users use it successfully, and as I say, wifi performance is stellar.

I know what you mean about the upstream speed, but it refuses to even handshake with qik, instead giving a error and bleep.

Have you tried qik? Any advice on what service to go for for the fastest upstream speed? I'm curious as to whether it's possible to effectively do an outside broadcast more or less live, using off the shelf parts and a free web service.

At the moment, having to wander about looking for an open wifi network is rather restrictive.
