you want digger plus driver !!!

THey are dangerous in amateur hands.

An ex neighbour pulled up a watermain and shattered a sewer by trying DIY mini jcb driver.

When we hired one 4 years ago you could only hire them with a driver anyways!!

you're only supossed to go so far down with them , then do it by hand (shovel) . It's common sense really . Besides if you are unsure get a copy of plans to see where the services are . If you ring Dunhams builders merchants in Dronfield , they will put you on to a chap called Robert that hires one out .

Most plans for older houses either do not exist or are innacurate.

I've hired one through work before (don't ask what for) and they were self drive. If it's a true 'mini' digger they're easy to operate, you're given full instructions and you *shouldn't* do much damage so long as you know what you're digging into. We got ours from Jacksons http://www.jacksonbc.co.uk/Products/JacksonHire/ I think it was around £100 for a day.

As I said... be careful, my neighbour thought it was easy and did over £2500 of damage to the water main and sewer.
