View Full Version : New obedience club starting
i've been asked to post this on behalf of a friend of mine there is a new obedience club starting on tuesday the 4th march at 8.30pm its at the community centre in wharncliffe side it is been run by experienced trainers so anyone that fancy's giving it ago just pop along with your dog and vaccination cert and you'll be very welcome . Hope to see some of you there :)
what are the prices like for a course?
not sure if they're charging for a course i think they're just charging £3 per session until they know how it goes
joanne5600 18-02-2008, 17:40 wheres the community center and is this for puppies or all aged dogs
You say 'experienced trainers', can I ask who the trainers are? And what experience they have? Just interested to know where they've trained before and what sort of experience they have.
If I can get there after the training class I go to earlier on on Tuesday nights, I may pop along without the dogs to watch - thanks for the heads up :)
just out of curiosity... what the heck do they need a vaccination certificate for?
is it show obedience or pet obedience btw?
holidayhutch 18-02-2008, 21:27 Obedience classes are great fun I remember happily the classes we went to with our 3, our trainer was great and we then took up private sessions with her.
Strix - dogs need vaccinating annually against canine parvovirus it shows that the trainers are vigilant and responsible in asking for certificates to be shown as it can be a killer - I'm guessing its risk assessment and ensuring everyones dogs are healthy and not likely to pass infection on
if YOUR dog is vaccinated, YOUR dog isn't going to catch anything - so why does the TRAINER need to know YOUR dog isn't going to catch parvo?
Parvo is carried in on people's footwear, so if it's to do with risk assessment, does everybody have to do this class in their stocking feet? :suspect:
boarding is a different kettle of fish
it annoys hell out of me when stupid assumptions are made instead of using a bit of noodle - which is why so many pubs etc don't allow dogs on the premises - not because they actually believe there is a health risk, but because they MISTAKENLY think the government won't allow it
Have heard of classess requesting vac certs before and with puppies definately to show they have had the full set before joining in with other dogs (when we took our 2 pups when i lived at home had to show the certs or we wouldn't have been allowed to join in).
I've had a snotty woman (and she was snotty) DEMAND (not ask nicely for) vaccination certs before - but there REALLY isn't any point
your dog's health is your responsibility, and no piece of paper is going to keep parvo or anything else out of the door. Vaccinated dogs can CARRY disease without suffering from it
Well, I know that when I start puppy classes (puppy classes being for pups under 16 weeks at the beginning of the course) I will be requesting a vaccination certificate.
WHY? Because when a trainer asks an owner for a vacc cert, and the owner doesn't have one the cogs begin to turn.
I will not be responsible for allowing young pups who are not vaccinated to come into an area where they are likely to come into contact with parvo carriers be it shoes, dogs or anything else.
I will be the professional in that situation and will need to be setting an example, yes - they may well allow that dog to mix in parvo ridden areas elsewhere but that's not my problem - it's nothing to do with me. All I can do is do my best to spread the message about being responsible when they're with me.
So I can totally see where these trainers are coming from. I don't know yet about the adult dog classes but certainly for young puppies I will be requesting a cert just because of the onus it then puts on the dog's owner and how it makes them think about it that little bit more.
hi there the club is for dogs of all ages and as far as i'm aware the trainers hold another club in sheffield on a different night but i'm not 100% sure where i will try to speak to the person who's organising it and try to get more details . For those of you who do come along i'll be the one with the old grumpy tan and white collie x and the young black mad collie x :)
forgot to say the community centre is on brightholmlee lane just below wharncliffe side school
I agree with you wrt puppy classes for the reasons you mentioned Lotti - especially as it doesn't seem to occur to some people exactly how important these injections are - and I wonder if the recent hoo ha over MMR has had an impact on the whole thing (don't ask - some people are just a bit dim ;) )
Well i think thats more the reason why strix, that some people just aren't aware of things like boosters and vaccs or realise the importance. Classes are about educating about all aspects of dog ownership and a good class should be promoting all these types of things. I think dog classes now should be more about education and how to be a responsible and knowledgable owner. we have had a few threads lately where we have said the route to preventing neglect and strays is education of adults and children.
I have seen both sides of this once when I did my trainer / instructors course at Derbyshire Canine Centre the trainer would not allow any dogs out of the car, until the vacc cert had been checked with a fine tooth comb.
The other is, when I did my training at Rother Valley College for dog grooming, one of the things we had to do was design a salon set up with record cards, business plan etc. I put a space on mine for vaccinated or not and received a puzzled look from the trainer when she marked my essay. She asked me why on earth I would want to know if a dog was vaccs or not, if someone was to bring an unvaccinated dog into a dog grooming salon then they put that dog at risk not you.
I think nowdays more and more people are seeing yearly vaccs in an adult dog as a money making scam from the vet. As a puppy then its a necessity, but many dogs receive 10years worth of boosters (should be a two yearly booster imo) but thats another thread.
I've started Takara on a three yearly booster programme where you still vaccinate yearly, but alternate what you vaccinate against or something like that.
I should really find more info on it...
well there you go - is a trainer or groomer really qualified to determine if a dog is protected or not? or does the production of any random bit of paper just absolve the trainer from guilt if somebody thinks they're going to sue for their dog catching something they should be vaccinated against whilst at the class (as though that'd be provable at all  )

when we had our boosters in Jan, we were told some are on a 2 and some a 3 year cycle, so next year we wind up getting all five vaccines again as they all coincide again
hi i've just been asked to post a reminder about this club it starts tomorrow night at 8.30 hope to see some of you there :)
I still don't know what experience they have :suspect:
pinkdolphin3 03-03-2008, 17:21 Could you tell me whereabouts the community centre is and will they be doing a puppy class?
sorry all i can tell you is that they run another club somewhere in sheffield but i don't know which one sorry
Could you tell me whereabouts the community centre is and will they be doing a puppy class?
the community centre is on brightholmlee lane next to the school and the info i've been given is that it will be for all ages one of mine is only 5 months so i'm hoping so , hope this helps :)
Can someone post a review of the Wharnecliffe Side class. I would go myself but don't fancy having my dog getting a panic attack if hordes of people turn up. Other classes I know want you to book up, and restrict the numbers.
bonio if you are looking for a quite class we popped to the on at hillsborough sports arena on thursdays, i didnt continue going as though i was being treat like i didnt know what i was doing after explaining that we had trainned for 7 years and wanted to come to meeet more friends and just refresh my dogs (we also go on mondays) this may be good as the hall was big but there wasnt many there from what i saw they seemed good and they knew what they were doing but just treat most people as if they had no trainning what so ever. they also told me about commands to use which i feel should be whatever you feel comfy using not what they say you should. but overall they seemed ok.

I also would like to know more about this class as my dog is only 11 weeks old and would like to know if it is more for adult dogs or a mixture .

Bonio - just go along without the dog ;) Any good trainer will be happy for you to come and watch before deciding to take your dog with you.
hi a review on last night for you i went along with both my dogs and the trainer is very focused on soft training there are no harsh methods involved there wasn't a huge amount of people there and the ages of the dogs ranged greatly from mine being the youngest at 22 weeks and also the oldest at 11 years i'm going to keep going for a few weeks and see how things turn out i'll keep you updated . :)
Thanks MrsJet, I may try and come along without psychobitch next week to see if she'd be ok there!
