View Full Version : My bunny keeps eating the cat food, will she be ok
lubylou12 17-02-2008, 21:57 hi all, i have a baby rabbit and she keeps eating the cat food, the meat and the dried stuff too. at 1st i thought it was funny but now im getting worried and keep moving her when i see here doing it, but she still gets in there when im not looking
i have to feed the cats on the kitchen side now, but leave dried food down all the time, and 1 cat will eat happily on the side the other wont and has to be fed on the floor, and bella the bunny keeps sharing it with her.
does any1 have the same problem or know if this will harm her.
i know they are supposed to be veggies but she loves it more then her own grub, she doesnt eat large amounts but has a good chew when she can
any genuine help will be great thanks:help:
Hmmm....I'm not an expert but I think that it will give her a VERY upset tummy.
The gut of a vegetarian animal will not be properly equipped for digesting meat proteins, so at the very least expect some stinky stools.
Bloomdido 17-02-2008, 22:04 Give the rabbit plenty of veg but not cat food. They aren't designed to digeset it. Ours has the odd nibble but the stuff coming out the other end ain't pretty.
lubylou12 17-02-2008, 22:18 thanks, she doesnt get runs at the moments with it, she seems fine, i will be making sure from now on she doesnt get near it, she does get bad runs with lettuce though.
i just wonder if there could be any long term affect from what she has already consumed
Rabbits are pretty cool with this kind of thing in small amounts,
ours (JR (stands for Just Rabbit no dynasty refference here) has the odd nibble on it every so often she also likes speaker cable and kicking the cats about when they try and get the better of her..
make sure if you catch her eating it that she has plenty of water to help flush it out (no expert but best you can do)

thanks for that, shes a big wallpaper eater too, ive had her 3 weeks n have had to redo the living room walls today, pianted this time but im gutted as it doesnt look as good boohoo
house rabbits do the funniest of things...
we only keep ours in during the winter months and then slowly re-introduce her into the outside world..
currently she is running round the office (when she was small she used to sit on the scanner shelfand try and nibble my knee when she wanted treats) now a days we have baby gates everywhere so she is free to roam (good hoovering before the kids wake up then she is put in the laundry room during the day (lots of mischeif in there) when she is in the office anything goes as its my room with all my equiptment but everywhere else she seems pretty happy just to beat the cats up (she tries to do her poops in the cat litter try thats just for her in the office but sometimes misses)
lubylou12 17-02-2008, 22:46 haha my bunny uses the litter tray too, i thought it would be hard to train her but she copied the cats, only probs is if there is more then a couple of poops in there shel do it next to it,but i suppose shes learning lol.
when i got her i expected her to sit munching and looking fat, but shes crazy, rabbits are much more fun indoors. she bombs around the house, jumps on sofa, gets on the arm and divebombs off, shes a daft un i tell you. she cgases the cats everywhere. its so funny.
Bunnies are the best of the pets in my opinion the cats hate me and i hate them, the bunny helps out when the kitties decide to ambush me on the way to the office..
so many pics and videos of me and JR I found her on the back garden couldnt have been very old at all she was just getting her fur there where 8 of them all together all died within weeks but JR, they kinda looked like rats when i had them they all were fed every 2 hours with special milk and a syringe (hand reared) as i couldnt bring my self to stick em in a carrier bag and brick em.. I think there mother was killed by a fox and the opening of the warren was just under the back fence.
had a big box with the bean bags that you stick in the microwave to keep them warm in the office, everyday i went to work to come home and go on the bunny hunt round the office and then go find which wires where chewed (only time i had computers off during te day ever)
BTW just found your other post did you ever get your hutch thing sorted? if not I have a spare indoors hutch (special one for poorly rabbits may need a damn good clean as its in the shed (i think) and its of no use to me these days I will have a looksi to see if i still have it)
Moonbird 18-02-2008, 00:45 :o Cat food is really bad for your rabbit, and so is wall paper :hihi: I know they are funny but you really have to be careful, they are made to eat a vegatable only diet.
SpeedwayDan 18-02-2008, 02:51 lettuce and carrots are also bad for rabbits, or so a vet told us when my nephew had one, she said just give them these ase rare treats in small doses, good mixed rabbit food, dandelion leaves and raw brocolli are better

Iceburg lettuce is a no no but other types such as romaine is fine.
Carrots are fine too in small quantities.

lubylou12 18-02-2008, 09:58 hi all ,she has a full carrot once per week and i dont give her lettuce anymore due to the runs. she does eat rabbit food and have some special bunny treats from petshop, she like bannanas, ive heard they are good for them.
im gonna have to watch her more closly round the cat food in future, but does any of you know what can happen to her if she does eat it again, could she die or just get runs
Moonbird 18-02-2008, 10:26 Not sure what will happen to the rabbit if she eats it, but I do know that long term its not going to be good for her at all.
Have a look in this (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showpost.php?p=1572083&postcount=4) post by sooz22 who is great with rabbits and runs a rabbit rescue, it tells you all about what they can and can't eat :)
lubylou12 18-02-2008, 11:17 thanks i have a look
