View Full Version : Who can grade you to a black belt
I am a 3rd Dan black belt in TKD. Under KUKKIWON rules i cannot grade my students in there kup gradings, so i have a 5th Dan black belt that is grading my students, as you have to be 4th Dan and above. I also run seperate lessons for WAKO rules kickboxing competitions. some of my students want to grade in kickboxing, i am lucky enough to also have 2 excellent kickboxers to do this for me, as they have a cyllabus that myself and my students can follow for gradings.
So my question is, what do you think about Instructors who have never graded in kickboxing, grading there own students to a black belt in kickboxing.
yes i do , but it would be wrong of me to name them. They should be honest to themselves aswell as there students
Well I myself do gradings in Kickboxing and have my WKA Gold Bar grade which is the top grade within the WKA Kickboxing syllabus.
I also hold a Kickboxing 4th dan with the SDF so I am authorised to grade one below my own grade.
If people are not sure about instructors credentials ask to see the certificates and research it.
If people claim to be Kukkiwon registered in Taekwondo you can go to Kukkiwon website and put in Name (must be full name) and Date of Birth and it will tell you there current dan status at Kukkiwon.
yes we know that about kukkiwon, as we have a friend who can also check things like that out for us. we know who is and isn't Kukkiwon registered... funnily enough that was gonna be my next thread.

I personally think that an instructor who has never Graded in Kickboxing but grades their students IN kickboxing is a complete FRAUD!!!
No offense and dont take this the wrong way but i tell things like they are. You really should be a 3rd dan or above to grade a Black Belt in kickboxing.

For WTF Taekwondo, Kukkiwon is a sign of credibility. When a TKD instructor goes on about how they are more recognised than everyone else, if they are not Kukkiwon registered after all that alarm bells would begin to ring !
which is why i want to be graded myself in kickboxing. That is why i am being taught by who i consider to be the best kickboxing instructors in the area.(no offence to anyone else or there instructors) I have seen my instructors fighters compete and they tell the story. I was offered/told i could carry my TKD grade over in to kickboxing whilst at my old club , this is something myself and other black belts didnt want to do.

Hence the question i asked in the first place.
What??? You were told you could carry your 3rd Dan in Taekwondo over to kickboxing???
WOW same grade as me already then :P
Tell you what JGHG your already a higher grade than Big Andy then lol
I consider myself to be a novice / white belt in kickboxing. I am going through the grading cyllabus along with my students, to hopefully gain my black belt. (legitimately).
I notice quite alot of veiws but not many replies, maybe i have hit a nerve. dont mean to offend people at all. I like to say it as it is, aswell.
Taekwondo and Kickboxing are seperate arts so require seperate gradings.
Sure most of the kicks are simular even TKD do a version of thai kick called full turning kick.
But a proper kickboxing syllabus will include boxing, kicks low mid and high, elbows and knees with plenty of pad work and sparring.
The footwork is completly different as are both suited to the respective rules.
And you certainly won't be doing no patterns/kata at kickboxing - not in my syllabus anyway.

Well a large chunk of the martial arts community are quite basically stupid with a capital S. Too many of them want their belts/grades on a plate (do they want a silver spoon with that too?). At AFK everyone earns their grades and are proud of them.

Instructors who have never graded in the art they are teaching shouldn't be grading ANYONE never mind black belts!!!

You are correct, Kickboxing should NEVER have forms kata and yes they are totally different. I wont attempt to teach TKD as it is different to kickboxing. Two totally different arts/sports.
