Thanks

Have you tried unlocking it yourself? I'm not sure if it will work with your phone but I unlocked mine with codes I found on the net.

I've tried that, but every site I've found wants £20 or so. I'd prefer to go to a physical store to know that it works. Easier to get things resolved.

There's a phone shop just off Fargate down the side of the Link opposite Claire's Accessories. I got my Moto V600 unlocked there for £20. :)

Whats it mean, Phone Unlocking ? how do you lock a phone and why ?

marketman
01-03-2005, 13:14
in the UK, networks lock the handsets to their own service and won't accept a different network sim card.
people shop around to find a handset at the best price and then have it "unlocked" to accept their sim card.
So its hooray! to the networks coz if they didn't lock the fones or sold them at the same price it would put us out of work!!!

Ok, getting it now, a bit, don't know much about cell phones but i do have one, i know now we can change cell phone companies andkeep the same number, something like that anyhow, but i understand the UK is far ahead of the US with the like of cell phones as Tvs also.

Fair enough, thought he did Motorola, obviously not. You might be able to get the unlock code yourself by browsing the boards in the 'mobile telephony' forum here.

Lots of unlock info there:thumbsup:

There's a little jewellers shop, opposite Mcdonalds on the moor they unlocked my old phone for a tenner!

Cheers Draggletail mate - but companies like mine have to purchase Motorola master unlock codes from a central Motorola server.

For just one code for us it costs about £8 (and that's to trade), in which case with merchant company charges I would have to charge about £13-£15 minimum to make some sort of profit that would be worth while.

Marketman has an unlocking clip so can do it manually.
If I had a physical store I'd do the same, but having a day job too - that wont be happening.

Marketman is a good manual unlocker anyway, and £10 is a fair cost.

any reason why? i'm going in to town tomorrow to buy my missus a VK530, which will be locked to vodafone.. i was going to take it to zerella to get it unlocked as i got the impression i could blag the guy down to a tenner with a bit of banter.. have you had a bad experience with them?

anyone got any recommendations for the cheapest place to get a VK530 unlocked? there are guys on ebay (with 100% feedback so they're kosher) offering the service for £1.50 plus £5 return post, so i'm a bit begrudged at paying £20 in the high street! especially when you can buy the kit to unlock it yourself for about £10 from ebay or from here (http://www.fonefunshop.co.uk/datacables/vk.htm)!

any help appreciated..

Hello,

I've just got the nokia 6680 but have taken it with a new number as the 12 month contract was excellent value.

Am I right in presuming I can't just put my old 3 sim into it and would have to get the 6680 unlocked? If so, is anyone out there able to unlock this phone, heard this may not be possible yet?

Cheers,

Dave.

Is it just a case of when or are there phones out there that just can''t be unlocked ever?

marketman
10-08-2005, 10:08
Its a case of when, the new nokia's are a new security platform so will take time to solve, if you have one on Voda i think they will supply the code for £19.99

Smartphone's on 3 can not be unlocked like the old phones used to be, however if you are at the end of your contract, then legally the phone is your bought and paid for, so if you contact 3 network they are obliged to unlock it

Yeah, are getting very tight with the phone unlocking.
A lot of people have been signing up to the good deals on 3 and then selling the free phone and using an alternative phone which they could not get on 3 because pretty much all of their handsets are cr*p compared to what you can get else where.

To combat this 3 are now super gluing their sim cards into the phone. So if you want the good 3 deals, you HAVE to use their big ugly handsets too!

Try the forum at Mobile-review dot com. There might be some more info for you on there.
