Ive got four square blocks on my desktop with really long numbers underneath. When I click on them it goes to :" Windows cannot open this file" It needs to know what programme created it" then " What do you want to do "

Use web service to find appropriate programme

or
Select the programme from a list.

What are these ? They may be from the Writers Group from stories submitted. I would like to delete them from my desktop(send to recycle bin) but dont know what they are. Any clues ?

In Windows XP, when you see an error message that says "Windows cannot open this file", or "This file does not have a program associated with it " Windows is trying to tell you that it's not sure what to do with the file, or it does not have the software needed to view the file installed.

What is the file extension?

They sound like files that either a program or windows has generated when it has crashed. Probably for debugging. My advice is to move them to another folder. If this doesn't cause any problem with any of your normal programs after a few weeks then delete them

Just right click on one. select cut. then go into a folder of your choosing. right click any where in the folder and click paste

I do not know what you mean by file extension.

A file extension usually indicates what program the file was created in. Microsoft Word uses .doc as its default file extension eg myfile.doc. You may not see this automatically as the default setup (in XP) is to hide extentions for known file types. You can change this by opening up a folder eg My Documents, going to Tools - Folder Options - View tab and selecting/deselecting "Hide extentions for known file types"
