I see there is what looks to be a new Indian restaurant in Hillsborough next to Wetherspoons/Deep End. Is this open now? And if so has anyone tried it yet?

This is the one that's been (in rapid succession) a Chinese restaurant, a noodle bar and a buffet place?

There was a sign up a couple of weeks ago saying that it was opening soon, but not mentioning any date.

well its had a facelift, nice repaint and they were litter picking the garden the other day so hopefully it will be a nice addition to the borough.

My wife tells me the Indian is open now, or it seemed so when she went past on the tram. I shall sample it tomorrow if I have time and report my findings.

It looks like they are at least making an effort with it this time, unlike the previous 2 or 3 Oriental incarnations. Looks like it could be worth a look.

Just got back from the weatherspoons and the owner of the indian was walking around giving out menus - says the chef has had 25+ years experience but its the owners first restaurant.

I had to be good to my word, so off I went to the new indian early tonight to sample the menu. The word is good! The decor is great, the service is excellent(these boys cant do enough for you) and the food was lovely. The gentleman who owns the place was very pleasant is really working hard to get everything just right, the attention to the little details are great.
Me and my wife have eaten at a fair percentage of the Indian restaurants in Sheffield and this it seems will be a little pearl, it really stands up to the best of them.

We had the menu through the door today and must say it looks a cut above the usual blue bin filler menu's we normally get. We'll try it soon and report back. Some mouth watering dishes on there, I must say.

i noticed it was open last night on my way home....so on account of it being cold i bobbed in to get a menu and warm my tootsies.

it looks really nice inside and i was impressed with the range of food on offer on the menu.

all i have to do now is decide when im going to sample the food- why does that always sound easier than it is when they dont deliver and i know it will be cold by the time ive walked it home at this time of year? :(

After reading it on here me and my other half had a walk down last night. What a great little indian restaurant the decor and lighting was really nice with background music playing. The staff were really great couldn't do enough for you but not in the sense always coming up and asking if everything was ok. The food was excellent ad the best bit was they would fetch you different types of sauces to try if you weren't sure if you liked them. We had 2 rounds of drinks, 2 starters, 2 currys, rice naan, 2 deserts and coffee and it came to £38 real value for money will definately be going again a decent indian has been needed in hillsboro for a long time so get yourselves down. Mention sheffield forum and the manager will be really inpressed!

We went on Friday night, was only a small order, 2 eals one rice, and I'm dieting so it wasn't my usual creamy sauce, had a shaslik kebab, which was lovely.

We tried the lemon and coconut rice, which did what it said on the tin, but wasn't quite what I was expecting: qite biter lemon taste, not bad but unexpected, quite alot of onon which my OH didn't really like.

H had a Malayan which was a scrummy sace, but more tomatoey than usal, but that s one of the dishes that seems to vary alot.

It came to £13 take away with 4 free popadoms, and again really nice service (and the bombay mix in the waiting area was really good too! not the usual floor sweepings!)

Will definately go back again.

Well went in last night for a takeaway, and pleased to report that Hillsborough has at long last,a smashing little, (quality) Indian reastaurant!
Went in and was made to feel right at home by the very freindly owner and staff.
I ordered something that was not on the menu,(balti lemon chicken),and the good news is it was excellent! Very tasty and good quality stuff.
Now while I was in there,The overall pub manager of the Rawson Spring came in for a sit down meal and a chat! And the more good news is that it looks like they are working together to make this little bit of Hillsboro a nice place to be(seeing as they are working side by side) I thought it realy good that a manager of a major pub chain is building links with a small business side-by-side and has recommended the Bangola Cottage to his customers too.

Forgot to add,as already mentioned, the owner can't believe how many customers are mentioning the Sheffield Forum!(even though he's only been open a week!) If we all keep this up,we should all be able to wrangle a 10% discount everytime we mention it! :hihi::hihi::hihi:

its not bad but i feel a touch pricy but very nice staff , and the menu s size of lettersand the speciality meals are hard to read, on the dark background.just acouple of little thing missing that you get in most restaurants is,slice of lemon in your jug of water, and a top up coffee is always nice if asked. but these things will come in time. good luck though with it

it's never as nice though, and other places deliver so I'd rather have it arrive hot and fresh.

Went to the Bangla Cottage last night - it was lovely! Excellent service, and the food was gorgeous (the naan breads were ).

The restaurant is very clean and bright, and the staff were great. They seem to be making a big effort with the place, and the deserve to do really well.

I didn't think it was pricey either, seemed to be standard prices for the dishes we had.

Recommended!

A small group of us went last night and enjoyed it. We had a selection of curries all of which were enjoyable. Mine wasn't particularly spicy (although I only like medium curries anyway) but tasty enough nonetheless. The poppadoms and nans were spot on.

Their house 'Bangla' beer wasn't bad for a premium lager and at £2.45 a pint we couldn't complain, especially since the glass was so nice!

They were also very friendly and couldn't do enough to make sure we were OK. The Forum got a mention as well. :)

They were very quiet (it was a Wednesday night) but said trade was slowly picking up, so I hope they do OK.

Will probably be going again next week.

When you've got a place that is as nice as this one apparently is, it's worth treating yourself to a meal out instead of a takeaway anyway!
Although there are definitely times when a takeaway in front of the TV is the only thing that will suit :-)

I love most Indian spices, but hate chilli or any kind of peppery food, which means that Indian restaurants are usually off bounds for me. Do you think that they would do a sauce without any chilli in for me if I made a special request? I have had some do it before, but it is a bit hit and miss, as they seem to be unable to imagine curry without chilli. Usually they will only offer Kurma which is also off the menu for me as I can't have dairy products either.

I do cook my own spicy sauces at home, but it would be nice to have a meal out.

I picked up a menu last wk and must say it looks really nice inside. It did mention on the takeaway menu that they make all dishes to order and that the chef is happy to accomadate special requests, that always is a good sign-freshly cooked food. Can't wait to try it.

I went to the Bangla Cottage last night with a few friends. It was quite busy when we got there (about 8.15pm) - there were a couple of tables for 6 left, but no smaller ones, so it's probably an idea to book if you're going on a weekend. There is a small seating area where you can wait & have a drink if there isn't a table straight away though.
The menu is reasonably interesting and has some exciting-sounding chef's specials which lean more towards interesting meat/fish dishes than vegetarian ones. That said, there's still a fairly substantial choice of mixed veg curries with the more standard curryhouse sauces so vegetarians still have a decent number of dishes to choose from. There were some tasty starters and we had some very nice lassi to drink. I wasn't massively impressed with my main course (mixed veg kharai), but I think that was more down to personal taste than the quality of the food. It was described as being quite garlicky & gingery, but it was actually very very mild (to the point that I couldn't detect any heat at all!), I couldn't taste any garlic or ginger, although I could smell the ginger so it was obviously there, and it was very heavy on cumin which I'm not all that keen on in large quantities. But everyone else seemed fairly impressed with their food, so like I said, I think it was just a bad choice on my part rather than the food itself not being good. There's a wide range of different rice/breads - the naans were fantastic and one of my friends recommends the coconut & lemon rice.
The service was excellent - very friendly & helpful staff who were unobtrusive but there straight away if you needed them, and the food got to us quickly. I'll definitely give it another try sometime, hopefully I'll choose something I like a bit more next time!
They also do takeaway, and 10% discount for students or Unison members. I hope it survives, Hillsborough is in dire need of a good curry house and that building seems jinxed, judging by the number of different restaurants that it's been since I moved here, so fingers crossed this one will stay!

I started this thread some considerable time ago now but I have to say I have been good to my word and nearly every week I have visited my friends at the cottage. Again I have popped down tonight and I must say, it's just great. The food gets better and better, so if you are looking for a really nice Indian and friendly sevice then these boys deserve a visit. I would like it to become as popular as possible so we can have an established indian restaurant locally and then I can continue to go every week!

Have to say we prefer Taste of India on Bradfield Road.

We went to the Bangla the other Saturday - to be fair it was quite late, we hadn't booked and there was six of us - but everything took ages. The pickle tray arrived before they'd even taken our drinks order. No draught beer. They kept apologising repeatedly (not just to us, everyone else was waiting) which would have been appreciated once, it just got annoying after an hour. When the food arrived it was OK, nothing special.

I think its got a lot of potential, they are always friendly, and we will no doubt give them another try, but our last visit left a lot to be desired.

Ok, it's been over a year since someone posted anything about this restaurant, and I went a couple of months ago, so thought I'd give a little update.
I am moving back to Sheffield, having lived here for several years previously. I have tried a whole bunch of indian restaurants and curry houses, and I am pleased to say that I think I have found the pick of the litter. I will probably return here every time, as I have not found one that matches it.
The atmosphere as you walk in is warm and it smells good (perhaps a strange observation, but I often find that indian restaurants smell either stale or overpoweringly of onions and chilli). There is a comfortable, slightly detached waiting area by the bar with nice sofas and Indian snacks in bowls (usually bombay mix, but like someone else has said, the proper stuff, not the fodder you often get). The staff are very attentive, and have a good sense of humour, but are not at all pushy, and this first impression is perhaps what makes the rest of the experience so enjoyable. The only slight fault was that there was no Bangla left on tap, which is my favorite asian beer. They did apologise for this though, and they had Kingfisher, so no big deal.
As far as the food is concerned, I was extremely impressed from start to finish. The vegetables were fresh, the spices were used in the right proportions and with some originality, and the side dishes like Saag Paneer were brilliant. The naan was the best I have tasted for many years; light, fluffy and flavoursome. But the thing that really sealed the deal for me was the meat. They make a point of the quality of meat used on the menu, and it is justified. I opted for a lamb Karahi, and whereas in other restaurants the lamb is usually passable at best, if not a little chewy, this lamb was tender and flavoursome. Trust me when I say you can immediately taste the difference.
The meal was also good value. 2 pints and 2 bottles of beer, 2 starters, 1 side, 2 mains a rice and a naan came to under £40!
This is my ringing endorsement, and I only hope it encourages more people to go there. These guys deserve a reputation, as the effort they put in pays off big time.

Spent £33 on a take out, and never got so much as a popadom as a gesture of thanks for my order, it wasn't out of the ordinary, at least the chinese appreciate your custom, bangle can shove their menu where the monkey shoves it's nuts, it can't come close to the Mangla
