After all my years in Sheffield, I've still yet to see him.

The Full Monty of course it was definitly put on the map for that

just shows you that British films get famous for actually being good rather than big budget special effects!

Great film:D
But what sort of image of Sheffield did it send out to the world?

Sheffield's famous for Charley Peace, the all-round and enterprising Victorian burglar and cracksman...

Ebenezer Elliott, whose statue is in Weston Park--the agitator (in rhyme!) against the infamous Corn Laws that led to deprivation for many working class people...

Samuel Holberry, the Chartist who tried (albeit in a rather revolutionary way) to help working class people to get proper representation in Parliament at a time when their voice was hardly considered important. He is buried in the General Cemetery in Sharrow and there is now recognition of him on a plaque in the Peace Gardens...

I know these are 19th-century examples but I'm only scratching the surface here and there is so much more that could be said.

Def Leppard I'll agree with (although they are well past their peak now).

But I must disagree about Henderson's Relish.

Wonderful though it is, Hendos is virtually impossible to get outside Sheffield and the surrounding towns. If it was available worldwide (eg Lea and Perrins Worcester Sauce) then Sheffield really would be on the map!

Yes I know you can get it mail-order, but that's too much faffing about (not to mention expensive).

Without doubt Sheffield is most famous around the world for its steel and cutlery. Wherever I go in the world, as soon as I say I'm from Sheffield, the response is "cutlery!" (I don't have the heart to tell them that it's all made in China these days).

The second most famous thing from Sheffield is Joe Cocker

I would say Marti Caine was more famous the Joe Cocker, she had her own TV show.

Unfortunatly it is normally bad things that get you on the map.
So it would have to be the Hillsborough Disaster.

You jest of course sir? Marti may have had her own (long forgotten) TV show, but she was little more than a chicken-in-a-basket cabaret singer. Total record sales? Not many.

Joe on the other hand is a world famous rock star of 40 years standing. His CDs are on sale in every record store in the world.

Oh, sorry, I didn't realise the question was "most famous old rock singer", I thought it was open to any type of entertainer.

I think more people could name a Jarvis Cocker hit than a Joe Cocker one, in fact I think people would me more likely to recognise Jarvis Cocker than Joe Cocker, but then thats what being "famous" means.

Silver plating along side our steel.
Barry Hines - Threads written in and set in Sheffield.
The first and best kept (!) example of 50's or 60's streets in the sky architecture, commonly known as the grade 2 (?) listed Park Hill (Dump) Flats.
Our history with Mary Queen Of Scots who was imprisoned for 3 years or so in Sheffield Castle.
John Ruskin.
Bizarre one - The Lyceum is the only example of a certain type of theatre - Google it if you want to know more.
Our history with snooker and The Crucible.
One of, if not the, biggest shopping centre in Europe, yes tragically, Meadowhell strikes again.
There was also a Hollywood B movie star who's name I don't remember. His face appears in the circular windows of the building just after the Hillsborough Walled Gardens.

Quote: Sheffield is famous because of steel and Deaf Leopard and film star Geoff Coburn from the Look Who's Talking trilogy and Baby Boom.

This is a wind-up, right?

In terms of world-wide fame Joe Cocker is without doubt the most famous* musical entertainer ever to come out of Sheffield.

It's got nothing to do with age, although logically, the longer an artist is recording, the more their fame tends to grow.

*Def Leppard have undoubtedly sold more records than Joe, but they are probably not as well known (or as well-respected) across all age groups

No it's not a wind-up.

I don't believe that Joe Cocker is more famous than Def Leopard, The Human League or Pulp. You might be a big fan (I'm suspecting that you run his fan club) but I bet that if you asked 200 people at random on Fargate today to name one of his records only a handfull could, and this in his home town.

And as for being respected across all age groups, I think you would be hard-pressed to find anyone under 35 who even knows who he is.

This company still exists in sheffield, it was brought out by the Mott MacDonald Group www.mottmac.com but still continues to export some great work from sheffield.
