View Full Version : Can you still buy Cunningham's Pickles in Sheffield?
Tazz070299 28-02-2005, 19:41 Many years ago there used to be a pickle factory on Queens Road called Cunninghams. They used to make wicked pickled onions and also picallili.
I don't think the factory is there any more, well at least I can't remember seeing last time I was in Shefield, but does the company still exist, and what's more, can you still buy Cunningham's pickled onions?

Sorry Tazz, I got it wrong.- Simon Webster who worked with Hendersons Relish, left the company and bought into Cunnighams Pickles. I will get more details tomorrow - I do know that Morrisons and Tesco stock them.

*Twinkle* 02-03-2005, 15:46 Lol you'll laugh but the factory got bought by the family who own Queensland furniture (next door) and the factory was converted into 12 flats and a shop! Up until very recently, I had been renting one with my Boyfriend, but now we've moved out... Oddly enough it didn't smell of pickle at all lol!
little malc 02-03-2005, 16:20 I remember those pickled onions very well, one fantastic recipe I used to do with them was buy a jar, empty the vinegar to the half full level, them top it up with sherry with a couple of teaspoons of demmerara sugar added. Re-seal, and put away for about six months, these are onions to die for!
Ned Ludd 13-06-2006, 11:30 Many moons ago there was much debate about Cunninghams pickles on the Forum
What came out was these are still made but in LANCASHIRE! Almost as bad as moving production to Leeds!
Many were convinced the pickled onions were not as of the days of yore
But most Forumites were of the opinion that the Piccalilli was much changed:
more watery, less veg and smaller pieces than in its Sheffield heyday.
Cunningham's MD came on and insisted the recipe was the same, but many continued to doubt this.
It still tastes OK to me but I find the veg pieces are too small and uniform now.
If Branston can make a version of their pickle for sarnies so could Cunninghams.....I want man sized chunks of cauli in my Piccalilli.... not effete morsels for spreading on my butty:shakes:
You can buy Cunninghams in Tesco

There's even a good chance, you will be getting original articles from the time before the Sheffield factory closed down, if you go by some of the dates on the stuff they sell in the market! How do they get away with it? I've seen stuff months out of date, stacked in boxes, unrefrigerated, that says 'once defrosted eat within 24 hours' on. I thought they had market officers to maintain standards. I've heard they're fantastic at security issues, but they're not that hot on policing what's sold.
nikkitheowl 14-06-2006, 20:50 my mum used to work at cunninghams factory on queens road many years ago i remember she used to stink of onions!!!!!!!!!!!

Is Fredricks still at Firth Park?
(I remember when it was down the Wicker and, as a special treat, my mum used to buy their sausages - they were the only sausages I'd ever eat!)

thanks for that info i will make a visit to sainsburys
They are by miles the best pickles going. Others just aren't the same. As past poster said they are now other side of town-Ecclesfield?
You can still get them but you have to look around & buy them when you see them not when you run out!!!!!
GrinderBloke 23-06-2006, 20:18 Picked up some Cunningham's Piccalilli in Morrison's this evening and the veg is now, as an earlier poster said very small :( I remember when it was difficult to get a piece of cauli out of the jar as it was almost the size of the neck of the jar, OK so sometime you didn't get a decent mix of veggie as it was so large, but still I'm not a fan of these tiny pieces. The jar I got seems to be more mustard sauce than veggies anyways.
Side note... We get Cunningham's here in Lincolnshire, sadly Henderson's is rarer than hens teeth.
