View Full Version : Interested in groovy knitting group?!
JoyfulGrrl 28-02-2005, 21:37 Hi! Am new to the Forum but really enjoying being a part of it - it's like having loads more friendly, knowledgeable neighbours to call on!
Anyway. A disturbing thing happened to me this year - I started knitting, and I'm only 32. Now, recently, my relationship has ended - CAN THIS BE A CO-INCIDENCE?!?!
So of course, I'm doing the sensible thing:-
A) running back to Meersbrook as fast as I can!! (I moved for the partner. Big mistake.)
B) thinking of starting a knitting group - Stitch 'n' Bitch as they say in Manhatten - for groovy people in their 20s,30s,40s - hey, 90s if you're up for it! - to show once and for all that knitting is not a sign of middle-aged drabness but a fabulous, soul-nurturing, fun way to bond!
So I was wondering - would you be interested in being part of such a group? I was thinking we could meet once a week at my house - we could alternate homes once we get going - and have projects, snacks, music and much gossip. Then, the beginners could learn from the experienced and we'd all end up with a bunch of new friends and maybe, eventually, some dodgy-looking hats!
If you think you might be interested, please reply. Maybe we could have a meeting in a pub (neutral ground) to begin with, and then take it from there!!
Joy xx
Kristian 28-02-2005, 22:29 I'm glad you're enjoying the forum - Welcome  I don't think knitting is my bag though; I'd never be able to cast-on with a drink in my hand! :P

JoyfulGrrl 01-03-2005, 00:22 Fair enough Kristian - though I'm sure if I found some of those bendy straws . . .
thanks for the welcome!

Knitting is going underground, and its getting funky. Would be great to get a group together to share innovative ideas and reclaim this past-time from the older dears.
Hello Joyfulgirl!
Just a quick post in support of your idea! Knitting group sounds a fun idea. Yet I wonder if this is a cake group in disguise with some knitting thrown in?! Either way, happy knitting and eating!
P.s. Can you knit mittens?
tinsel_ninja 14-03-2005, 10:14 Not really my thing, but on my blogging site, there's a group of users who have a punk rock knitting forum. They swap patterns and trade advice.
http://www.livejournal.com/community/punk_knitters/
Enjoy.
Hullo, Now this might sound a bit stupid, but would you have to be a 'knitter' to start with? or could I just some along and learn? Sounds like a great idea and I would love to have a bash! I'm pretty new to Sheff and live in a house of boys and this sounds like a great idea to get out and meet some ladies!

I'm sure there would be plenty of folk there that would take pleasure in showing you; I would have thought it would be more of a social thing, so I guess folk would be friendly rather than knitting in competition! :D

hello joy, im interested in knitting and have recently got into it myself. I never thought i would be saying this but im really enjoying it. i guess im getting old. your idea about forming a knitting group sounds great. i have just registered on this site just now after searching the internet for knitting groups, and wow i have come across this notice from joy. i dont know how this works, and how we will be able to get in touch to meet to talk knitt. but im having a go at sending this, so chat soon byeee
JoyfulGrrl 03-04-2005, 21:51 Hi Shana,
Welcome to the forum!! :)
Hurray, another knitter!! I know, I blush to admit the extent of my addiction too, and friends may mock, but . . . . where will they be when my gorgeous creations are atop the heads of the fashionistas, eh?
Or maybe my nieces will just continue refusing to wear the strangely-shaped tea cosy hats I've managed to produce so far....
Well, I completely failed to get to the knitting group we found online - they meet on the last Friday of the month and I was sick, booooo! But they meet in the afternoon which might be difficult for some people anyway. An evening would be better for me. Maybe we could get together in a pub and sort out a regular meet-ups? I sense a Forum knitting group coming on!!
Will post a date on this thread when I've got my act together -
let the Knitterati unite!

[B]Hi Shana,
hia joy,
It would be good to start something up like this group, you can learn so much, especially for someone like me, who is still trying to understand what the whole knitting terms stand for in patterns.
I will keep checking the site to see if any arrangements have been made for meetings.
well nice chatting to you, hope you feel better soon
take care
shana:thumbsup:
Hi! I would be interested in starting up a groovy knitting group too, as long as it in the evening!
Any news yet? I've got twitchy fingers!
If you ladies are interested in knitting for cancer,
google CHEMO HATS, you get all the patterns you need.
We knit hats and take them to the kids cancer hospital, they must have NO seams and NO wool, but theres plenty of nice fluffy yarn thats wool free.
Hi joyfulgrrl,
I like you started knitting recently, am 33, and live in Meersbrook.
You can come round to mine as I have a few crafty type things I'm learning. Knitting being my favourite. Believe it or not I started it due to my degree requiring this type of thing.
If you want to get together PM me hun.
hey, anyway knitting is the new "binge drinking"!!!!!
:D
designbunny 25-04-2005, 20:36 Hey can i join in too? I live in Meersbrook + have needles + wool, but no idea how to knit lol :)
yes! Pm me and we can arrange something.
Can I join in too please? I live in Netheredge, which I dont think is that far? Hey, what sort of degree requires knitting?

TheNewGirl 17-05-2005, 17:22 Hiya Guys,
So did the 'Funking Knitting Club' kick off? Interested to know how it all went? I wanna play too
curlyginger 03-06-2005, 16:39 Hello
I run the Sheffield Knitterati which is the group you've been discussing above! There are 45 registered members now of all ages. If your groovy knitting group is up and running / or is not, it would be great if you'd all come along and join us one day.
We meet last Friday of the month in The HUBS, was national centre for popular music, from 12 'til 2. Yes there does tend to be free cake. We also have loads of yarn and needles for beginners and other members.
Tomorrow we're having a knit-pic on Devonshire Green as part of Devonshire Jam 05. Rowan have sponsored us so there are free patterns and yarn plus other stuff - all free gratis. 12 til 5pm. It has been said that this is a shameless plug for Devonshire Jam - but since its a free community event I hope thats not a crime.
More info about Knit-pic and Knitterati contact me, Rebecca, at r.a.kilner@shu.ac.uk or on 0114 225 5002
Hope to meet some of you soon!
tamarindl 10-06-2005, 11:33 hello
i met up with the Knitterati at the Devonshire Jam and was taught to knit. really interested in finding out if there is an evening or weekend meeting as unfortunatly can't make the Friday lunch time ones run by the Knitterati. I live in Walkley but don't mind travelling into town. i like the idea of meeting in public areas rather than peoples houses, only because i wouldn't be able to return the favour easily due to small flat. :)
love to hear from you. Tamarind
curlyginger 10-06-2005, 14:30 Hi Tamarind
Perhaps we could have a Knitterati get together in a pub / cafe / elsewhere one evening a month? Maybe in The Showroom on first Monday of the month? Got any other suggestions?
Rebecca
tamarindl 10-06-2005, 14:47 sounds good, am busy thinking of anywhere else that might be an option, but the showroom sounds good. i think there was a group meeting there for a book swap or something so I think they wouldn't mind. they have some fantastic sofas as well. :D
will post if anywhere springs to mind.
curlyginger 10-06-2005, 14:51 Yep the Book crossers meet there regularly on Saturdays about 11pm. I can't really do weekends as I live in Huddersfield so a week day evening is best for me. Let me know what you think about Mondays (or another evening) at The Showroom and I'll pop over and talk to them.
Rebecca
tamarindl 10-06-2005, 14:57 can make Mondays but a Tuesday or Thursday would be preferable, I spin poi on a monday evenings but missing one a month wouldn't be a problem if it turns out to be the most popular night.
gutteridge 16-06-2005, 16:07 Hi Joy
I'm also a keen knitter and interested in joining your group did you manage to get anything organised.
Karen
curlyginger 17-06-2005, 09:05 Hi
If you can't make Mondays, Tuesdays are good for me too. So shall we say provisionally Tuesday 5th July, 6 til 8ish? I'll speak to the showroom to check thats ok with them and confirm it properly after that.
Rebecca
tamarindl 17-06-2005, 09:52 sounds good to me. :) will put in diary now.
gutteridge 17-06-2005, 12:47 Sorry Tuesdays are not very good for me but will try to come along on the 5th for the first meeting.
curlyginger 24-06-2005, 10:02 Ok, well if we stick with Tuesday 5th for the first one and then maybe chat about a different regular day then?
Rebecca
aliconstant 03-09-2005, 17:05 is the knitting group still meeting? I'd like to come along but cottoned on to this thread a bit late...

I'm very interested and wondered if you could provide details of this club and when/where it meets thanks
curlyginger 31-10-2005, 09:42 Hi Wendy

susiepoosie 29-01-2006, 23:35 Hi there, just found this thread and love knitting. Is the group still running and if it is would it be ok to come. Can do most evenings and weekends, if it's day time in the week could arrange it if know a while in advance. Thanks then, Suse
curlyginger 30-01-2006, 10:02 Hello Susie
Yep the group is still going. some months there are 10 of us and some months there are four, you never really know what to expect. Our usual meeting time and place is 12 til 2 last friday of the month upstairs in The HUBS, paternoster row.
If you follow the link a couple of mesages up you can sign up for the yahoo group and that way can find out about other coming events, including plans for a weekly monday evening meet at Wetherspoon's in town that one member is currently organising.
Curly
beamarshall 21-02-2006, 00:03 stitch n' bitch starts monday 27th february 2006 in the wetherspoons pub next to john lewis in town. from 8pm every monday. hope to see you there!
