Hi, I'm trying to find new activities to do, and two things I'm interested in are yoga and martial arts, I'm new to both of them but I'd like to try. I'm 23 and would like to do these activities partly to meet others my sort of age, I also don't have much money - are there any good free/cheap societies or clubs I could join? I live in Walkley but can get to the city centre easily.

Thanks
Jon

There's a Karate club at Hillsborough leisure centre, they train on Wednesday and Friday nights 6.15-7.45 PM.

If you want a bit more local there's the Working Men's Club on Providence Road up Walkley that has Karate lessons, I used to train there myself up till about 10 years ago, I gave up cos I was fed up of getting varucchas on me feet from training barefoot on mucky floors.

The numbers of both venues will be on Yell.com or in the Phone book probably.

The university jitsu club has people of that age range.

sessions are quite cheap, and the first one is free so you can find out if you like it.

A good martial art is Brazilian Jiu-jitsu - Check Royce Gracie out on the internet for one of its more famous students.

Its awesome and the 1st principle of training is safety - if you keep injury free, you can train tomorrow and if you can train tomorrow you get better.

I have just strated an adults club in Dronfield and I graded directly under Royce Gracie in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

If Dronfield is to far, I live at Norton Lees and can give you a lift.

Its Monday nights.

I look forward to hearing from you if you are interested.

Cost is not a big issue i teach for love of it.

this is what think as far as martial arts goes:

Taekwondo :

Either Graham churchills if you want the ITF style , or the WTF style at the 393 club under Andy Hill (olympic style, very sports based)

Ju Jitsu:
Well our freind who ahs posted here has answered that one and hopefully one day i will be up to have a look! ive always been fascinated by how those Grcie boys do it!

Muay Thai:
Wicker Camp if you want private lessons OR if you have done it a lot before and want to fight professionally

Andy Marlow if you like smaller classes and you like to be taught how to Box (andy is an ex pro boxer too) as well as thaibox.Youll get good trainign and more one on one time than at most martial arts clubs.

Kickboxing:
The sheffield kickboxing club
www.sheffieldkickboxing.com
they teach proper kickboxing and not a diluted karate/kung fu system
and they also dabble in a few other styles (thanks to having brought instrucotrs from other styles on board)
i currently train here.
