View Full Version : Council purge flyposting aimed at students
A vigorous campaign to control fly-posting aimed at students will be mounted by the City Council next week when thousands of new students arrive in Sheffield for the new academic year.
The Council has organised rapid-response teams to take down posters that have been erected illegally and also to take action against the promoters in clubs and bars responsible for the fly-posting during ‘freshers week’.
The Council is asking for the public to help by calling the Helpline (0114 273 4567) if they spot posters displayed illegally in their neighbourhood.
Councillor Harry Harpham, Cabinet member for Streetscene commented: “We are determined to eradicate this street pollution that spoils the environment for everyone. Our officers have been geared up to remove these posters as soon as possible and we will be prosecuting those responsible.”
Agent Dan 19-09-2003, 12:09 Couldn't they just have specific areas where it IS allowed? How will non-students find out where to go out?? (apart from the topics posted on the forum, anyway...)
tinajones 19-09-2003, 12:58 this is so stupid - its part of the economy and many small event's promoters can't afford the offical poster sites. at least its better than flyers all over the floor and on pub tables. theres a few posters attached to lamposts round where i live and find them informative and cultural, but then ecclesall RD does look like a tip as there are too many.
im involved with a club and it is essential to the clubs survival... maybe if there were more areas that it was allowed...
DaBouncer 19-09-2003, 14:20 All you lot moaning about fly posters being banned. Let me put this to you. If the promoters would have gone round taking down their own posters after the event in the first place. It would NEVER have to got to such a situation where rapid response teams are required.
Promoters have no one else to blame than themselves IMHO.
surely fly posters are better than being heckled in the street :/
you cant walk up fargate without 5 or 6 people asking you stuff or giving you leaflets.
dont get me started on that mid-20's bloke giving out leaflets for something called "sheffiuld farum" at the sheffield fayre!! i think he was called "goff" or "heff" ;)

Last heard that guy had a gimmick where he was rolling em into the shape of spliff, filling em with tobacco and oregano and selling the leaflets for £5 a pop!

Granted, but you wouldn't get as many complaints if you went round removing the posters and those annoying plastic ties afterwards.
1Man&hisBMW 19-09-2003, 21:36 Maybe a new initiative with promoters is required ie: They can post in designated areas, so long as they remove them after the event as DB says.
I'm sure Sheffield CC have come a long way working with clubs, but surely clubs and promotors are linked, so perhaps the clubs would be the main driving force in getting the invididual promoters to sort out the mess they leave behind afterwards.

Such posters look a mess and lower the tone, particularly along Ecclesall Road. I'm glad they are to be banned. At last some common sense.

It is the same the length and breadth of the British Isles, lap dancing and strip clubs are particularly bad offenders.
The alleged shortage of sex workers has caused many to try and recruit via postering city centres.
To be perfectly honest I suspect they just want younger strippers rather than the 'professional' girls they already have.
E-Man Groovin 21-09-2003, 10:13 I think that DaBouncer has a great suggestion - let the promoters police things themselves. The council want Sheffield to develop, but they need to realise that street-level entrepreneurs can have a huge influence especially in the field of music and arts. I think that they need to realise that the reputation of a city isn't soley based on how many multi-million pound apartment blocks and hotel developments there are.
For these buildings to be used, people need to have a reason to come to Sheffield, and that's where all the street level diversity can be useful. Final point: note how the expensive, planned & sanitised CIQ hasn't really made it as the cultural heart of the city, whereas the street-level, funky Division Street. has.
Sermon over.
Peace out.

People have been complaning about litter on the streets, isn't this just as bad???
Why not just let the promoters and the uni/colleges/pubs get together and distribute on premises rather than on trees/lamps/railings etc.....

Surely its just a prelude to what you should expect once you get to the other end! :o
1Man&HisBMW - to be taken lightheartedly of course!
kittykat 21-09-2003, 20:26 The posters do look a mess especially when theyve been up a while and they get all tatty and people have written stuff over them. Unis have plenty of noticeboards inside for things like this so why not just go in like playman says and stick them up on there and if non-students want to know about the events they know where to go. Theyre all rubbish anyway but if its what people want i suppose they need to be informed.
