View Full Version : Burglary - strange call from police

I wonder if anyone has had a similar thing happen, and can reassure me....
We were burgled on Sunday night, reported it and CID and scenes of crime came Monday morning. Thought all was fine, and the CID chap made us think we probably wouldn't hear anything again.
Then this morning I got a phonecall from someone at the police station sounding quite severe, wanting to go over all the details again. They were asking things like why we didn't hear the burglars, and saying about there not being any fingerprints, that not much was stolen, etc. Then said that some things I mentioned weren't on the crime report, even though I know we showed the CID man - like that the garage was forced open.
I felt as if they were checking up as if they didn't believe us.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?

newmanandvan,
That's what I thought. Thanks - I wanted to see if anyone would get the same impression. Since we're being totally honest, I hope they'll just realise that.

if you dont think the police are treating you right, just get the nam e of the person you are talking to and give the local inspector a bell.

they HAVE to sort it from there

madowl and iamthemoon,
I know that your advice is sound - and thanks for it - but the person (stupid me, I didn't get their name) didn't actually make any accusations, so O don't want to cause trouble. It was just that they sounded sort of iffy about the case. I wanted to see if other people would get the same impression, or whether I was being paranoid. If they accuse us of anything, then I'll certainly take it as far as necessary. It's bad enough being burgled anyway, without having to fight to clear your own name as well!!!

15-02-2008, 14:28
in that case mate, it may be the crime was not properly reported. your crime number will have an amount of data attached to it.

sometime the CRB (crime recording bureau) will just call to double check the bobby who put the report in is doind it in the correct fashion.

if you have any queries dont feel afraid to call the local cop shop or the switch board (0114 2202020) to ask them and get it right in your head.

remember the police are here to help YOU and will take the time to make sure you know whats going on.especially in this recent period of 'victim orientated policing'!

Police Always Do That They Did It To My Mum And Dad When Same Happend To Us It All Came Down To Trying To Put Pressure On Them To Admit Something That Was Not True.
They Will Try To Put The Blame On You Because It's Easier To Do That Than Get On With There Jobs Catching The Real Criminals Which There Payed To Do.
Also The Insurence Company Will Do Anything To Get Out Of Paying You.

Thats bizarre, because im investigating a burglary at the moment and ive not called the owner of the house suggesting they are lying. I have however called them several times to let them know what stage im at in the investigation, that there is potenial forensic evidence on an offender and what i propose to do next.

Please would you be willing to tell us where you have gotten your facts from????

I would phone the police anyway. You need to make sure that it was actually who they said they were (don't worry, knowing the name would have helped, but they'll understand if you explain that you just want to confirm the call was legit).

if i were you, i wouldn't worry. It is most likely something innocent. As somebody else has mentioned it could be another officer thats dealing with the case and they need to clarify the facts. Ring 2202020 and give them your crime ref number or incident number and just ask which officer is dealing. They should be able to give you a direct number for them. You can then ease your mind!

When Im Speaking From Past Experience..
Hmmmm.

Well Sorry For Expressing My Opinion....
And If Anybody Is Ignorant It Would Be The Police As They Have Obv Done This To More Than One Person Before And It Makes The Victims Worry As You Can See

So Even If Your "Not" One Of The Lazy Arsed Police Officers Then It Is Obv That There Is Still Some Around.

And Then Please Explain Why This Person Has Been Put In This Situation That Has Worried Them?

Is A Police Officers Job To Make Victims Of Bugulary To Feel Worried?

Your speaking from 1 experience whereby i imagine you misread the situation. in addition to this the police have a duty to investigate crime and if they suspected you of some form of fraud then YES they will investigate things.

Judging a whole genre of people on 1 incident is absurd. When i was young a black lad tried to mug me. So by your reconing i should distrust and dislike all black people then yeah?? ABSURD!

Believe it or not MORE than one person before will have tried to scam the insurance companies, and been successful, therefore increasing the premiums for everybody else!

At the moment we have no idea why the police called the OP back, it is more than likely something innocent that will become clear when she calls the officers. Instead of insantly trying to make excuses to have a dig at the police, why dont people hang fire and offer sensible advice instead of giving silly, convoluted reasons that are highly likely to be totally off the mark.

Good luck with the investigation though, hopefully it is an innocent call, simply checking the details had been input correctly.

No Because That Would Make Me Racist And That is One Thing That I Am Not !!!!!

Im Not Making Excuses To Have A Dig At The Police i Admit They Are There For a Reason But When Things Like This Happen It Does Make You Wonder

Im Sure Im Not The Only One Whos Thinking This
And Maybe If They Sorted The Situation We Was In Out A Lot Better Than They Did Then I Would Have More Faith In The Police But As They Did Not I Have Not Much At All.

You must recognise that police and insurance officers may wish to see how you tell your story.

Your insurance company may ask you to repeat your story 3 times or more.

If your claim is true, just make sure that you continue to say the whole stpry in the same way..

If your claim is false, doh!

Darbee's has mentioned what he does for a living if relevant to the thread.

and those three are just off the top of my head. When discussing crime and how the police work it makes sense to say that you work for the police, as it makes people aware that you are giving an informed responce/ opinon. Of course you dont want to hear that do you, because it blows your silly little point out of the water and ruins your chance at slating the police for no reason.

you have NO idea what your talking about, the onus is on police more than ever to investigate crimes, with every concievable angle being looked at by the CMU (crime management unit), and officers following up whatever clue they have to go on.

No offence Jessiee but you might find that if you type in this way it makes you look a bit dumb. Whether it's right or wrong that will mean that other people will take what you have to say less seriously. It would probably be better for yourself to stop typing like that.

Yep

Whether you're 16 or 61, typing in a way that others find hard to read is:

a) not a very sensible way of getting your point across, assuming that you actually wish people to understand your opinion, and

b) in the same vein as txt spk and typing all in capitals, considered rude on internet forums.

For both of these reasons, please stop doing it, or you're likely to find that others stop reading your opinions and just comment on your rudeness. If you take your CAPS LOCK off, that one should solve itself.
