Really bad about the bunnies, but there is not an awful lot you can do other than what you have already said :(

Glad to hear they are back, that is terrible news about the bunnies though, how did the owners react?
wondertec 15-02-2008, 16:28 glad you've got em back, soory to hear about the bunnies tho. what did the bunny owners do / so? similar thing happened to my auntie rabbits, but we were looking after them at the time, a jap akita got loose and into the garden and their pen and killed all 3 rabbits.
So relieved to read the end of this thread and know you've got them both back- you must have been besides yourselves with worry. Such a shame about the bunnies though- I know it's instinct and can't be helped - I hope you can come to some agreement with the owners. It's done you some good though- losing your pets for even a short time is a wake-up calland teaches us to review our usual habits and tighten up for future ( I know- the dobermutt managed to smash open our gate and leg it down the street - we now have a much sturdier gate but unfortunately the milkman doesnt always remember to close it properly so we always go out before the dobermutt does, to check it before letting her out). Give both doggies a big hug xK
oh lord thank goodness your safe, but poor you finding out theyve killed, as already said its instinct and couldnt be helped. anna.x.
TattyBear 15-02-2008, 21:23 Im glad they are back. What have the owners of the bunnies said? they must be devastated, I hope no children saw it :(
Thank god they are safe.
Poor Bunnies what a terrible thing to happen, but know one can blame anyone, these things do happen unfortunately.
I'm glad they're home BV - so sorry to hear about the bunnies though :(
I assume there are no foxes in deepcar that outside buns would be protected against?
or are huskies more determined and resourceful than foxes when it comes to hunting?
I'm glad you got them back - oh god though, I dont know what I would do if this happened to my rabbits. Then again, our back garden is pretty secure and safe for our two.
BlackVelvet 18-02-2008, 13:38 The bunnies were in hutches Strix. Unfortunately the construction was no match for our boys jaws :(
Owners were ok about it, and we compensated them along with our humble apologies.
Rainrescue 18-02-2008, 19:49 I saw a fantastic husky type being taken into a pound when I was there at the weekend. I am not up on these types of breeds but was pretty small - and so gorgeous and friendly
it must have belonged to someone.
I think it was a bitch and she was scared to death poor thing.
so if you hear of anyone elses' running, drop me a line and i will tell you where it was

Jesus Christ ... at least wasn't a human I suppose - though I'm afraid if they had been my rabbits, the dogs wouldnt have lasted long.

oh come on it was an accident these things happen you cant help natural instinct if they were my rabbits i would be completelygutted but i wouldnt have them put down or hurt them.
If my rabbits were locked SECURELY in a cage and two dogs came in and attacked with such ferosity, which they obviously did as they were inside the cage where you think they would be safe, I certainly would not stand by and let them tear the terrified rabbits to pieces. I'm not sorry if I offend people with my reaction - this is how I feel and I should hope you agree that I am ALLOWED to have my own thoughts on this.
im not saying you cant have your own opinion but i feel its abit extreme to have them killied.
ok so say it was a fox would we have to go out and kill that.
I'm really not going to get into a discussion ... the above are my thoughts - the rabbits weren't running loose in the garden, which I kind of could have understood ...they were secure in their cage .. and yes, if I caught a fox doing the same, my reaction would be the same; to stop the carnage in any way possible. When I said in my post "the dogs wouldn't have lasted long", it wasn't meant to mean that I would have them put down; it meant that I would, in any way possible, go to the defense of my rabbits in ANY way I could.
And with that, I'm off to work.
Well any pet owner would. I have two dogs and two cats and love all animals but if any animal was ripping one of mine to bits - I'd do whatever I could to get it off. That's normal for any pet owner.
The owners of the rabbits probably didn't stand by and watch - they probably found out later and there's nothing BV could've done - it's nature, it was an accident they got out and huskies have strong instincts. (Not saying it's right - but it does happen)
I think most dogs would do the same if they were hungry, frightened and lost and saw three warm meals sat waiting for them with only a wooden box between them.
Your comment about 'at least it wasn't a human' I'm failing to understand! My dogs would quite happily kill and eat a rabbit (actually, they caught a wild mixy and shared it for breakfast) but it doesn't mean they'd bring down a human to feast on!!!!
Sorry but whatever anybody says, hutches are not safe and secure - even against foxes. One of our previous bunnies was killed after a fox got into his hutch (simply by destroying the main body of the hutch).
The bunny owners were of course right to be devastated and it was fantastic of BV to compensate (personally I think it was also the right thing to do) but in my view, having owned dogs, cats and rabbits (the rabbits were kept outside in hutches) - dogs get loose, there are plenty of stray dogs and hungry foxes - if you want your rabbit to be safe and secure it either lives in the house or in a hutch in a locked up shed or similar.
Not in a basic hutch in an open garden (like ours were and were not safe).
Saffy it came across that you would want them to be PTS i understand that any owner would do anything to get them off i would do the same. but as lottie said 'hutches are not safe and secure' it is an unfortunate event that is part of the life process. sorry if i misunderstood you i just feel it would have been unfair to have the dogs PTS for this action.
neeeeeeeeeek 19-02-2008, 11:47 A dog that kept escaping from it's garden killed our cat a few years ago. I then found out that on it's many previous escapes it had killed at least 2 other cats. If I could I would have had the thing put down, that way the owners may have felt a bit more responsible for not securing the garden properly the first time. Unfortunately the law does not protect cats. I am NOT saying these people let this happen often before anyone has a go at me and am glad they dogs are back so hopefully no more pets get munched!
They are beautiful dogs but i am afraid if i had run into this pair while out walking my small dog i would have been very worried indeed.I would give your hubby a strong lesson in security and take another look at the gate that is holding them in or not as it turned out.Feel so sorry for the owners of the poor rabbits.
I can understand that neeeeeeeek although you may have had more success in reporting them and suggesting they had the dog took off them and put in a home where it wouldn't keep escaping.
It's actually against the law to allow a dog to roam which, if it had got out that many times, they could have been done for.
That said, having a dog took off you and put in a good home wouldn't make you feel guilty like having a dog took off you to be destroyed would but if they wanted to get another dog, they may be a bit more careful the next time.

A greyhound ripped one of my cats to pieces when I was about 10-12 years old - it was a terrifying ordeal to watch and to be powerless to prevent. At the time, the owner didint even acknowledge that their dog (and ex racing hound which should have been wearing a muzzle) had done anything wrong. It got run over 3 days later though. At the time , I was mortified and hated the thing with my every breath, so I wasnt sorry it died. Now I'm older and wiser, I realise it is instinct - but I dont think I could be so forgiving if a dog killed one of my pets now. Fortunately, my gang are indoor cats. I really feel for BV- her dogs escaped and got to the rabbits before she could do anything about it and they are not allowed to roam or escape normally, so would not normally pose a risk.
Moonbird 19-02-2008, 12:43 I think that this was a very regrettable incident all round and there are lessons to be learned on both the dog owners part and the rabbit owners too in a way.
Naturally sympathy is going to be with the rabbits owners that is understandable but lets not turn this into some sort of witch hunt.
BV is a very responsible owner and this is a one off accident, it's not a regular occurance... and she has done everything in her power to make things as right as she can possibly do, I'm sure if she could bring the rabbits back she would in an instant, she feels really bad about what happened... lets try to keep things in perspective.

Not exactly sure what lessons the rabbit owners could learn! Other than get a gun or something that eats dogs!
... or keep the rabbits somewhere more secure?
this thread is in danger of getting too polarised :suspect:
I in no way blame the owners of the rabbits, but if we admit it to ourselves, there are a lot of ways we can do more to protect our own pets instead of pointing the finger at every other pet owner when we let them down
if I knew there was a pet eating monster living a few doors down, I'd be more careful about booting my cat out to face the music for instance
neeeeeeeeeek 19-02-2008, 14:42 Good idea Strix, maybe they should build an underground concrete bunker for the rabbits, what were they thinking keeping them in a hutch! People are so stupid. Good to see you have not changed after your 6 months away...
:loopy:
:hihi: glad to see you've kept your humour Neeeeeeeeeeek ;)

I think that you might be getting a bit carried away now, also a bit personal.
I do think that there is a lesson to be learned by rabbit owners yes, and if its a concrete bunker then so be it, the hutches that are bought in the shops these days are purely rubbish and so thin they take no tearing apart
we do need to do our very best to protect our pets from preditors, and I am in no way blaming the rabbit owners at all, what happened is a tragedy... but it does need thinking about don't you agree? we have to look at the bigger picture here instead of laying blame.
Anyway I think this thread has gone way off topic and has run its course now, so I am going to close it, feel free to begin another on the merits of safe rabbit hutches if you please.
