Strix 14-02-2008, 11:24 PM don't the rising sun on fulwood road do one?
jamesogt 14-02-2008, 11:48 PM Out of interest what is the attraction of carvery?
Not to put them all in same category but veg is overdone and sat for hrs as is the meat. Surely fresh cooked and ordered is far better?
bobbyblade 15-02-2008, 12:18 AM try the conyers at conisborough 5 mile from doncaster,
car park is heaving at dinnertime that speaks volumes.
Andy C 15-02-2008, 12:38 PM Castle Inn at Bradway or Cricket Inn at Totley.
BasilRathbon 15-02-2008, 12:55 PM If you're towards the North of Sheffield you could head out to the Button Mill at Worsbrough or the Horseshoe at Harley (just over the hill from Chapeltown).
Ousetunes 15-02-2008, 02:29 PM For value for money, beautifully cooked meat, large portions and a real country pub feel, I'm hard pressed to find a better place for a Sunday Roast than the Sportsman at Lodge Moor.
Their Sunday carvery is a sell out week after week. You either get there early or book in advance. It's worth it. You can always settle for hot roast sandwiches if you can't manage a full dinner.
Drinkwise, there's Taylor Landlord served as it should be and on my last visit it was supplemented with cask Tetley and Greene King IPA. Even their keg Magnet is a decent drink.
It's a small pub which fills quickly. If you can't make a weekend, go midweek and enjoy huge portions of food (albeit not the carvery) and excellent ale.
CathS 15-02-2008, 04:26 PM Never been but was told the Admiral Rodney at Stannington was good
Lindseyw 15-02-2008, 04:41 PM Definately the Bowshaw @ Dronfield
Studmonkey 15-02-2008, 04:42 PM I'd recommend the Toby Inn and Parkhead (S11) Great food, good service and a nice setting. It's either £6.50 or £8.00 on a Sunday.
Parkhead

Matt S 16-02-2008, 09:16 AM I had Sunday lunch at the milestone last week, best sunday dinner i've ever had, everything about it was spot on, it was £9 which is a few quid more than a lot of places but it was superb and totally worth it, I'll be back there very soon... and no i don't work there...
scubatony61 16-02-2008, 08:57 PM Thanks everybody for your input
I will re-post after the event

scubatony61 18-02-2008, 10:19 AM BasilRathbon:-
If you're towards the North of Sheffield you could head out to the Button Mill at Worsbrough
Well Guys and Gals
We finally finished up at the Button Mill.
My verdict:
When we went in there was nobody who seemed to know what was happening apart from, a small blonde haired waitress and a bloke in a shirt and tie.
I asked can we have a table for two, I was told get your drinks and we will find you :loopy:
So I purchased a bottle of wine.
So while we are stood at the bar, and despite there being several tables, we were offered a table for four right next to the carvery, I said no can we sit over there (table for two)and she said yes.
So we went and sat down and waited and waited then she arrived with the menu, we both ordered salmon, we waited and waited and waited then when it arrived, she was carrying both plates with a grubby teatowel and explained that the plates were hot, said nothing else then left.
So while we are sat there, with two pieces of salmon about 5" x 2" x 1" thick
(get a tape measure and check this):loopy:
I picked up my plate that was warm and went over to the carvery.
The following were on offer:-
Sprouts:- as big as malteasers
Carrots:- long and stringy
Cabbage:-tired,limp and had seen better days
Roast potatoes:- some good, most bad and burnt
There was no-one serving at the carvery table it was a free for all.
We were then offered a selection of sweets.
I had apple pie, my partner had sticky toffee pudding
Then two coffee's
The bill £29.85
For several reasons I will not be going back
Price is not one of them, I will leave to draw your own conclusions.
Ousetunes 18-02-2008, 11:09 AM This would not have happened if you'd gone to the Sportsman at Hallam!
The good news is, the only way is up from here!!
neeeeeeeeeek 18-02-2008, 11:13 AM The Stag on Psalter Lane or the Milestone. Neither are Carvery's but both very good Sunday lunches. The Milestone is not so good if your veggie or want something other than a roast (limited sunday menu) but the roast is always very good. The Stag has a great selection of other things and is cheaper and the roast is also excellent. Only thing I don't like about it are are the amount of people who go there with babies and very small children.
Ousetunes 18-02-2008, 11:19 AM Whilst you're in that region, neeeeeeeeeeeek (I haven't counted the e's) the Psalter Tavern further along Psalter Lane has never disappointed when it comes to excellent food and - that rare thing - value for money.
The food is also served quite quickly so is ideal if you're in a hurry.
Their burgers with curly fries are fantastic. Decent range of ales too (Abbeydale Brewery IIRC).

Nannan007 19-02-2008, 01:08 PM How disappointing for you. I can highly recommend the Rivelin - not a carvery - just great homemade food. If you like yorkshire puddings this place is a must !!! On a good day you can sit outside (great view) and have a drink while you wait.

Layla Jones 20-02-2008, 05:11 PM I enjoyed food at the angel at eckington
steve69 22-02-2008, 05:57 PM Bohans Irish Kitchen (the deli on London Road) are taking over the kitchen at The Harley on Glossop Road from March, so that's gonna be one of the best Sunday dinners in Sheffield.
Bestlad 22-02-2008, 09:38 PM Cubley Hall out Stocksbridge/Penistone way used to be really nice but not been for a while though. You didn't have to have the carvery meats and could order other things and then just have veggies from the carvery. I had wild boar last time but we are talking a year ago.
