First place what springs to mind DQ for a "trial" if it seems very popular how about following 'off the rails' footsteps in Club Void (Wicker arches).
DQ isn't the biggest of places but a trial run wont hurt anyone there and Void is a bigger place, so if it's popular take it there.
Well theres an idea for you, also keep us all upto date as i also loved the mix and would deffo be going if this gets going.
Good luck & keep us informed.
p.s. I think someone who has strong connectins with DQ also post on here, think his name is Matt.
johndixon 25-02-2008, 09:03 PM Thanks Carl mate
I'll keep DQ in mind, what night would you like it to be on...any night in particular???
I'm asking these questions cus I need to know what you the target audience want.
I'll be doing another old skool house mix in the near future so will keep you informed:)
discodown 25-02-2008, 09:06 PM do either upstairs at DQ or penelopes or the back room at nylon
xmiax 26-02-2008, 01:06 PM Thanks Carl mate

Off topic here but i would love to see the Retro team perform at sheff sometime in the future.
Jackdanny 26-02-2008, 08:01 PM How old?
Bass and bleeps?
88 - 91??
johndixon 26-02-2008, 08:38 PM The tunes will be from about 92-98.
I was thinking of having the night at the Forum. Its a great little place with a mixed crowd from young to more mature people.
I played there last year and when I dropped in the odd old skool tune, the place went crazy.
What do you guys think???

Chris BIO 28-02-2008, 01:33 PM Ay up John - only thing I would say about putting an 'old school' night on is that you might find yourself getting stuck for tunes to play eventually (daft as it sounds)! It's the same prob I have with soul/funk/disco etc on a Satdee - if you're only playing old stuff it means by very definition that you never get owt new to play, so it can be limiting. I can dig up as many old, obscure gems as I want but come a certain time of night people only want stuff they know, which can leave a DJ in a bit of a rut as there's only a finite amount of records you can play.
Monthly nights might be best, save it from send you crackers. :loopy: Only so many times you can play Gat Decor before you snap it in two! :D
Have fun anyways. :)

You too?
Don't get me wrong, I like a bit of old school (88-93 were the best years in my opinion) but isn't there enough quality new music out there now to play? These events can only ever really be done as one offs for the reasons Chris gives above.
I can honestly say as much as I love house music, I would never go to a 'classics' night. Much better done when one is slyly dropped into a set of current stuff.
scottf 28-02-2008, 01:41 PM an old school house night sounds good- especially on a friday or saturday- the only problem is your going to find a venue that needs a new night thats still in the city centre.
Chris BIO 28-02-2008, 02:04 PM These events can only ever really be done as one offs
It's not to say don't do them, just don't put yourself in a situation we're you're playing Alison Limerick 3 times a night, you'll need to keep it interesting for yourself as much as the crowd, maybes try to strike a balance between the popular stuff and the connoisseurs choice.
Edit: And get Disco on, it'll just save him badgering you! :hihi:
WYEXILE 28-02-2008, 02:36 PM Yes, what I meant to say is these events work best as one offs or on a quarterly basis. By no means am I saying don't do it, from the response on here there's clearly a market for it.
Don't get Disco on, his idea of a classic is anything played at Hed Kandi circa 2002 :hihi::hihi::hihi:
johndixon 28-02-2008, 03:03 PM Thanks for your feedback guys:)
I agree that keeping a flow of up to date house would definately be beneficial as the novelty of old skool classics would wear off slightly if played one after another for hours on end. By dropping them in every so often provides that little build up between each one, also providing that element of surprise for the old skool classics to go down a real treat. I know this from past experiences of playing out...YOU CAN'T BEAT A BIT OF THE OLD SKOOL!!!;)
Which do you think would be best suited for this type of night...Friday or Saturday???
scottf 28-02-2008, 03:55 PM definately saturday- a saturday night when most of the 'older' people come out that know this music better.
johndixon 28-02-2008, 05:00 PM Righty-ho
I'll get some phone calls made and try and establish a date fora Saturday in the very near future (about a month away to be precise lol)
Just another thing, would you pay £2 to get in from 8:30pm - 1am on a Saturday night???

johndixon 24-03-2008, 09:45 PM Hey everyone
Just letting you all know that myself and a friend of mine will be going into some venues this week with a proposal to discuss the details for hosting an old skool house night.
I will keep you all informed this week on how we get on and if the night is going to go ahead.
Is this something you would like to see in Sheffield and would you attend??? Cus from previous comments, I think there is a clear opportunity and place in the market to bring back the old skool house to the steel city...the music that defined an era!!!
