View Full Version : Cricket Inn - Totley
sergeantb 14-02-2008, 12:27 Apologies if this question has been recently raised..
I believe the Cricket Inn has recently been taken over by the people who own Tyme cafe in Brookhill.. is this correct? If so can anyone recormend the place? what is the food like and do they have a website up and running?
Cheers
Ousetunes 14-02-2008, 12:32 Well, Thyme have a cafe in Broomhill.
I see it as nothing more than a glorified caf'. Overpriced and overrated.
And the same applies to Thyme at Crosspool although it's a nicer venue.
As I've said elsewhere, don't believe the Richard Smith hype.
sergeantb 14-02-2008, 12:34 Interesting that you say that, i love my food and try out all the different restaurants around sheffield when ever i can, when i went to thyme in broomhill for the first time i was really impressed.. Good quality food, big portions.
Ousetunes 14-02-2008, 12:38 Well, I liked the food in Thyme Cafe, but over £9 for meat and potato pie?
As for his restaurant, it's good food, but that's it. It is not magnificent. (Try West 10 for that accolade.)
I also think that his Crosspool eatery is too large, that when you're supposedly paying top whack for (what should be) stunning food, it wants to be a little more intimate. But that's a personal thing.
I get the impression - admittedly a snobby one - that it's 'Eating out for people who don't eat out'.
Actually, that's unfair, Damons takes that title with ease.
The food and the way you order is similar to Thyme Cafe. Likewise it's child friendly. It stocks decent if expensive ale and it has a cricket pitch outside, which isn't a great selling point in Feb.
Covered in more detail here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=229073)
Mr Goose 14-02-2008, 14:36 :(:( I thought the criket inn is over rated. My sandwich had obvious shop bought sliced bread and the service was pretty poor. I wont be going again.
Shame really - a good pub with good ale + food in south sheff would be ace.
Why dosn't somebody with vision take over the Chantrey or the Abbey in Woodseats?
I dont think I can stand another 'with 72" sky sports plasma" type pub......
One thing I want to know, if the actual Cricket Inn is up Totley, why is the Tram stop near the Park Hill Flats called Cricket Inn Road?
Ousetunes 14-02-2008, 15:21 Because incredibly, there is a pub there called...can you guess?
The Cricket Inn!!
True, there maybe others, but on Cricket Inn Road you'll find a boozer named the Cricket Inn.
Now, for your next question:
Can you tell me in which city the show Chicago was set?
Or howabout: What was the name of the ship in Mutiny On The Bounty?
Which city is named in the song New York, New York?
Buttercup80 14-02-2008, 15:22 I think the Cricket is pretty good if you want a fairly chilled out lunch or dinner. The food is good and it's much better now they have a menu with a specials board rather than on multiple boards dotted around the pub, which was really annoying. I'm also a big fan of Thyme Cafe and have never had a bad meal there. I like to think i know decent food as cooking and eating take up most of my spare time, but in the end it's all about personal choice and what you want from a meal out. I tend towards the less formal, while still having good food and wine. Another top place for that sort of dining is The Pasta Bar on Sharrowvale Rd. All three are worth a go if you haven't been before so you can form your own opinion!
I agree about the quality of the food at Thyme Cafe in Broomhill. 4 of us had a great meal there a few weeks ago. Utterly spoilt by the loud music. The venue isn't that big and, with everyone chattering and having a good time, it isn't necessary to crank up the volume with music. We asked them to turn it down, so that we could hear each other talking, but the staff ignored us. A real shame, but we shan't be going again.
websters gue 14-02-2008, 19:43 There used to be a pub on Cricket Inn Road called the Cricket Inn but it was pulled down
years ago.It was located near the spot, which is now the entrance to the retail park on
Cricket Inn Road.
:O I proper love the cricket inn...mmm the food is soo nice love it....I would higly recommend it.
InvalidUser 14-02-2008, 21:05 Well, I liked the food in Thyme Cafe, but over £9 for meat and potato pie?High prices keeps the riff-raf out.

How come we've never bumped into you in there? :P
I'm not reading all this thread coz it's trend seems to be to pull the place to bits
we like it
we like it even more now it's all pub so we're not restricted as to where we can sit with the hound, and we've yet to go there and not wind up spending the evening chatting to a bunch of people we've never met before :)
food's good too  (but we lived near London for a number of years and don't choke on our beer if we're asked to pay more than greasy spoon market prices  )
I have been to the Cricket Inn several times. The quality of the food is consistent and good but I've found the service to be very hit and miss. Like Thyme cafe, I find it relaxed and child-friendly.
I have only been to Artisan (ex-Thyme) once since the change and was disappointed, especially at £25 for a steak. (Back then it was dear at £16, but fantastic).

A skritch what does that mean ever?

... but staying on topic... we like the beer in the cricket too :D
Hahah ok...too late for us i dont think so :P
holymoses 15-02-2008, 07:04 I once made the mistake of going to Thyme resturant, when I went it was called smiths at thyme or something similar.
The service was horrenous, the food was teppid, but the price was way over inflated.
Good service is part of the basics for any type of eatery. When you are made to feel welcome and your custom appriciated you respond with a tip, plus the word of mouth advertising.
Adding the service charge, its like saying we don't care if the service is good or bad your paying anyway!
They forgot the word of mouth advertising, my advert is "I wouldn't go there".
